WASHINGTON, April 20 (Reuters) - The United States is unlikely to attack Somali pirate bases on land due to the risk of civilian deaths but it may help local authorities fight the scourge, a senior U.S. defense official said on Monday.
Somali gangs have captured dozens of ships and earned tens of millions of dollars in ransom, pushing the issue up the U.S. security agenda, particularly after pirates tried to hijack a U.S.-flagged ship with an American crew this month.
The brief seizure of the Maersk Alabama and the subsequent hostage drama involving the ship's captain have led to calls from lawmakers in Washington and former military officers for U.S. forces to attack the pirates' base camps on land.
But U.S. officials are wary of any action that could kill civilians and lead the pirates to seek common cause with Islamist militants such as Somalia's al-Shabab group.
"We are not really looking at, from a U.S. standpoint, doing anything on land," the senior defense official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"These base camps are located, co-located essentially, with villages so the potential for collateral damage is significant."
Asked about the possibility of air strikes, the official said "never say never," but they were unlikely for the same reasons. The United States has used air strikes in the past to target Islamist militants in lawless Somalia.

Why should we attack the "poor" pirates?
They're just carrying out the official Obama Administration Policy of robbing from the "rich"--- to give to the "poor"...
Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday and asking why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:
1. BHO wouldn’t authorize the DEVGRU/NSWC SEAL teams to the scene for 36 hours, going against OSC (on scene commander) recommendation.
2. Once they arrived, BHO imposed restrictions on their ROE that they couldn’t do anything unless the hostage’s life was in “imminent” danger
3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS had the raggies all sighted in, but could not fire due to ROE restriction
4. When the navy RIB came under fire as it approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to ROE restrictions. As the raggies were shooting at the RIB, they were exposed and the SEALS had them all dialed in.
5. BHO specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge CPN and SEAL teams
6. Bainbridge CPN and SEAL team CDR finally decide they have the OpArea and OSC authority to solely determine risk to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead raggies
7. BHO immediately claims credit for his “daring and decisive” behaviour. As usual with him, it’s BS.
We need to apologize to them for having the audacity to run shipping within a thousand miles of their borders...
Hell, unless Chicago gets nuked we won’t attack anyone!
So just monitor the area with drones. Any vessel putting out to sea with pirates gets bombed.
Whatever we, we sure as hell don’t want to get obligated for nation building in Somalia... again.
Don’t want to get into a quagmire.
We all know how that worked out.
We’ll probably “apologize” for their existence and say that we are “deeply dissapointed” in their actions.
You can't make this s*** up.
This may have something to do with those missing “yoots” from the Land of Franken. They are Somalia’s ace in the hole right now.
The fact is, the current administration is unlikely to do anything about anything, except 1. spend exorbitant amounts of money, confiscated from citizens, on utterly useless projects calculated to purchase votes; and, 2. plunge the nation irretrievably and inextricably into a morass of socialism which can only lead ultimately to bankruptcy.
Splendid policy announcement, Oba Mao! Now the terrorists know all they have to do to operate freely is keep a couple of civilians close by as shields.
Well duh
Any body notice that Somalis are black?
And that "Present" Obama is "black?"
And the the Congressional Black Congress has already (see Blackhawk Down) decreed that it is racist to stop blacks from killing American troops, breaking laws, being terrorists and hostage takers?
Even if troops, military, and whites are at risk of death and the USA is humiliated and seen as weak?
Ya wanna tangle with Jesse Jackson?
They won’t nuke Chicago, too many friends there.
Not with Obaby in charge. Might kill some of his relatives.
I guess the French or Germans will have to clean out those Pirate nests. Maybe India or Italy could lend a hand. Too bad this has to happen while we have a training president in charge.
Thanks for the report. This is what I expected to be the case.
