Veteran soldier trapped for two days after 250ft fall lives thanks to World War II survival skills
The Daily Mail (U.K.) / various ^ | April 18, 2009

A veteran soldier who became trapped in a ravine for two days after a 250ft fall has survived, thanks to skills learnt 65 years ago during World War II.

Great-grandfather Daniel Currie broke his elbow and shoulder after slipping during a walk at Fiddler's Elbow, near Abercynonon in Wales on Good Friday.

Unable to move, and without food or water, Mr Currie protected himself using survival skills learnt while serving in the Army 65 years ago.

The 87-year-old covered himself with leaves as temperatures plummeted to 3C overnight, and cleared surrounding undergrowth in order to make himself more visible to rescuers.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr Currie said: 'I am really lucky to be here. I thought if I could get to my feet I could get home.

What I was saying had nothing to do with you. My father worked for the rest of his life, too, just as you say you are going to have to do. He did not expect NOR RECEIVE, welfare. He is deceased now, just as you will be one day, as we all will. Before that, you will get OLD and may need what little Social Security you can legally draw. HE PAID INTO THE SYSTEM for years as we all have had to do. - Welfare queens, now that’s another story altogether, veteran, black or white.

No thanks. I like to avoid exercises in futility.

You need to justify why you believe your post 15 and why you think vets don't deserve benefits. You cannot brush off your words as if you didn't spew them and think they'll be forgotten.

unlimited entitlements for veterans.

Unlimited, no way. Medical as they (we) were promised, hell yeah! Pension for those who earned one, of course. Out of that pension, I will continue to pay till death for the SS security scheme in the form of FICA, and Income taxes for the rest of the BS. Your idea of 'taking care' is misstated. Do you deny that the above positions of mine were not earned?

Terpfen stepped in it up to their neck and is not adult enough to apologize to the Vets for it’s stupid remarks.

Sure sign of a liberal.

He says he’s only 24. Maybe he’s just not mature enough to apologize. However, it still sounds like he believes that vets deserve no benefits. I find that amazing.

Your idea of 'taking care' is misstated.

It wasn't my idea: I was responding to the initial misstatement.

And your post is exactly my thinking. I will gladly pay in to help make sure our vets are supported in the manner you outline.

What I initially said, and has been lost in a flood of BS, is that I dislike how WW2 vets put their lives on the line to defend America, then came home and voted for Democrats who constructed a socialist entitlement system on the back of their victory. That's not denigration of the accomplishments of those who joined the military, it's a lamentation of what they voted for. Huge difference.

No it hasn't. It was quoted back to you word for word and you can't defend it.

Thanks for the post

You're quite welcome :-)  I'm delighted that you've found it to be worth your time  :-)

And thanks to all of the Veterans, who richly deserve far more support than what they've gotten in so many cases.

“I said the WW2 generation came back from Europe and the Pacific and voted for Democrats who instituted entitlement programs.”

LBJ for sure, Carter out of disgust for Watergate and Clinton had a lot of the young vote, so I wouldn’t place the blame on that election.

Truman and Kennedy Democrats had more morality and conservatism than today’s republican party.

Exactly. Thank you.

Though I must disagree with you about Truman. Knowingly appointing a Soviet spy to the IMF disqualifies him from being described as “moral,” IMO. No moral person would appoint a communist to anything, and no conservative would knowingly appoint a foreign spy to anything.

It wasn't my idea: I was responding to the initial misstatement.

Based on this statement, I believe you have been misunderstood vis a vis Veterans' benefits.

is that I dislike how WW2 vets put their lives on the line to defend America, then came home and voted for Democrats who constructed a socialist entitlement system on the back of their victory. That's not denigration of the accomplishments of those who joined the military, it's a lamentation of what they voted for.

How many Americans were WWII vets? 15 Mil? Did they all vote for socialist programs? You have a tendency to paint with a broad brush and on this subject you are seem to be using tar. You are young, apparently 24, but that is old enough to know that vets are not a monolithic socialist voting bloc, nor have they ever been. I think that is the claim that is so irritating here. I believe that is the misconception for which you owe an apology IMO. 24 is old enough to know that as well.

I’ve seen a poster banned for the very same thing.

If the Boss sees it.

And this kid is backpedalling like crazy. My post 13 was about my vet uncle needing surgery and the VA telling him to take a hike. This kid's response was post 14. He says he supports medical for vets in post 87 but he did NOT in 14.

Maybe the kid has re-examined things and changed his mind BUT he hasn't said so and is trying to say that we twisted what he said when he was quoted word for word.

To which I'd like to reply with a pithy little e-mail I got recently that may apply here. Btw, I just started using the VA benefits I was accorded in 1984 but only began to use in 2003.

Drafting Guys over 60

Many are over 60 and the Armed Forces thinks they're too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 42 to join the military. They've got the whole thing ass-backwards. Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to join a military unit until you're at least 50.

For starters: Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.

Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. 'My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry' We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some a**hole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better.

An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10 a.m. Old guys always get up early to pee so what the hell. Besides, like I said, 'I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical s.o.b. .....

If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.

Boot camp would be easier for old guys. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we're used to soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns. We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.

They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I've been in combat and didn't see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training (or basic Officers Training).

Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.

An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start up a conversation with a pretty girl... He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head.

These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way.

Let us old guys track down those dirty rotten coward terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple of million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons who know that their best years are already behind them.

***How about recruiting Women over 50 ..with PMS !!! You think Men have attitudes !!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh my God!!!

If nothing else, put us on border patrol....we will have it secured the first night!

Have you ever in your life felt death whisper in your ear? I mean something as simple as stepping off a curb as the car whizzes around it to hear screeching brakes as you are maybe yanked back just in time by a friend? Everybody has those moments in their lives. It leaves you shaken and grateful to have lived. Thankfully these moments are rare in civilian life. Maybe once or twice in a lifetime. More if you live recklessly and to that you risk the moment when you fall off that edge.

To these men who serve that you so casually malign, this little whisper is a very real daily companion. Not in combat, either. This is a dangerous job and it's one where you can get killed in training. Training happens every day, rain or shine. For the guys who pull triggers in all their varied forms, accidents happen.

In the 14 years I was associated with the US Army either on active or reserve duty, I lost eight friends in TRAINING in various parts of the world. Some of these accidents were vehicular. Some were associated with ordnance of some sort. Some were related to airborne operations. Do you get to work by jumping from an aircraft?

My point is that to ensure your tidy little life with all these freedoms people willingly put their lives at risk on a daily basis with a much greater chance of harm befalling them than virtually any you run.

Don't these valiant souls deserve a little bit of respect and medical care? It seems to me you so easily dismiss them when they're of no further use to you.

Again, from this former 13B, SHUT UP.

Thank you for your service, Darksheare.

And Terpfen, you should either serve and experience it firsthand or shut up.

I have not served, but my father is a retired Navy aviator who served 28 years and my entire upbringing was spent as a "military brat." I learned long ago to respect those who make it possible for us to retain our liberty.

I have had the honor to work with the military for the past five years and still do. These folks don't necessarily have it easy and they earn the benefits they receive after retirement. And, I might add, they do quite difficult tasks without complaining. In fact, most of them are very enthusiastic about protecting our country.

God bless 'em all.
