UN sounds warning after Antarctica ice shelf rips (UNEP - UN Environment Programm)
AFP on Yahoo ^ | 4/7/09 | AFP

Posted on 04/07/2009 10:38:24 AM PDT by NormsRevenge

PARIS (AFP) – The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) said the breakway of a Jamaica-sized ice shelf from the Antarctic peninsula could accelerate global warming in this already vulnerable region.

Satellite pictures show a 40-kilometre (25-mile) ice bridge that was the Wilkins Ice Shelf's last link to the coast had now shattered at its narrowest point, about 500 metres (yards) wide, UNEP said.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf once covered around 16,000 square kilometres (6,000 square miles) before it began to retreat in the 1990s, and by last May the ice bridge was all that connected it to Charcot and Latady islands.

The loss of the bridge "may now allow ocean currents to wash away far more of the shelf," UNEP said.

...

In the past 50 years, temperatures have risen by 2.5 degrees Celsius (4.5 degrees Fahrenheit), around six times the global average.

...

"Although the Wilkins ice bridge collapse will have no direct consequence on sea level rise, it might have an indirect impact, as the decay of the ice shelf will reduce the stability of the glaciers that are feeding it," said Lambrechts.

In the past 20 years, Antarctica has lost seven ice shelves.

LOL! They haven't been able to get themselves to look at the corrected temperature data. The antarctic has been as much as 9 degrees below normal temperatures over the last few years.

The ice broke off because it got too large to be able to hold itself against the ocean currents.

"The ice broke off because it got too large to be able to hold itself against the ocean currents."

Exactly, and all calving is caused by advancing ice, not retreating.

Applied Materials slashes value of solar deal

***************************EXCERPT******************

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Applied Materials Inc. tumbled Tuesday after the chip-tools maker drastically slashed the value of a major solar-power deal as a result of the global market slump.

a $1.9 billion agreement to supply solar-power equipment to an unnamed customer has been cut to roughly $250 million as a result of the economic downturn.

meanwhile we have this clown:

It would seem that Global Warming Propaganda is warming faster than the globe itself:

Warm Seas Melting Ice Shelf the Size of Scotland by Steve Connor

An ice shelf in Antarctica the size of Scotland is rapidly disintegrating because of warmer seas, scientists said yesterday. They believe that the Larsen ice shelf on the Antarctic peninsula may disappear within 70 years.

This photo released by Greenpeace shows a crack in the Larsen B ice shelf in the Wedden sea, in Antarctica. (AFP/EPA/File)

Although the ice shelf will not raise sea levels - it is already floating on the ocean - scientists say that its loss may trigger a release of ice from the peninsula's mainland, causing global sea levels to rise by 1 meter (3ft 3in).

Researchers led by Andrew Shepherd, a glaciologist from Cambridge University, found that the Larsen ice shelf had thinned by as much as 18 meters in the past 10 years. That can only be explained by a warmer ocean, he said.

The study is published in the journal Science a day after a study revealed that the ice in the Arctic was melting rapidly due to a rise in temperatures, threatening the natural habitat of the polar bear.

Both studies used radar measurements taken by the European Space Agency's ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellites. This enabled the scientists to monitor the loss of ice over huge areas of sea at opposite ends of the Earth for 10 years.

Dr Shepherd said: "We've discovered that the Larsen ice shelf is thinning due to warmer oceans around it."

The radar measurements of the ice shelf's average height above the sea, which are accurate to within 20cm, revealed a pattern of thinning since measurements began in 1992, Dr Shepherd said.

The amount of melting freshwater running off the ice shelf into the surrounding sea was equivalent to eight times the flow of the river Thames. This could disturb the local sea currents that were part of a much wider global ocean circulation, he said. Dr Shepherd said that it was not possible to say with certainty whether global warming was directly responsible for the melting. However, he said that it was indisputable that the sea around the Antarctic peninsula was getting warmer - although other parts of the Antarctic continent were getting colder..."

What? Antarctica thawing out is a BAD thing? Looks to me like, even IF it were true, that lots of free land would suddenly be available. Same goes true up in Northern Alaska and Canada. So what are they complaining about?

Where exactly is this happening?

I read that there is SUBTERRANEAN GEOTHERMAL activity in one particular part of Antarctica at the present. But the rest of the region, that is not in the immediate vicinity, is getting COLDER.

Does the author acknowledge this?

Is it possible that this “climate change” is actually fueled by volcanoes and NOT atmospheric changes?

Any one of many pending natural events can do far more impact on our world climate than anything man can do or release short of a nuclear weapons exchange.

Like I said elsewhere more then once in the past half year, someone had better light a fire under the Republican Congress, and force them to get the word out about all the false information being put out to the uneducated world.
There must be a starting point to beat off the clowns claiming global warming actually is taking place. As well of course the vast amount of long term data that points to all the forces that exist that indicate mankind has no effect on causing warming of the earth's surfaces on a global scale.
