Windows 7 is going to kill the overpriced Mac business model. This severe recession is also impacting Mac sales since many of the liberals and artistic types made money on Wall Street and our financial sector which is undergoing major shrinkage

Highly specialized case -- insisted on a notebook, and great screen resolution.

Hard to generalize from this.

Cheers!

I predict that Mac will survive, because of the quality of the product.

People who are emotionally involved with their operating systems are just weird.

One thing left out of the article is the quality of the hardware. I went through two Sony laptops before switching to the Mac. The sony laptops both began having major hardware malfunctions before they were a year old and Sony was not at all cooperative in getting them fixed. With my second one the bottom of the case melted due to overheating and Sony refused to fix it, claiming user negligence. I have had Macs for three years now with almost no problems. When i did have a hardware problem with my MacBook, the folks in the Apple store fixed it for free while I waited. As for the operating system, Mac does everything I want without concerns about viruses or adware.

Sure, if you are looking for a small, light laptop the Mac is not the way to go, but I can think of no other good reason for not buying a mac.

I probably wouldn't have shopped for a Windows laptop, if not for Seven.

This.

For all the verbiage, the author points out that even Microsoft won't advertise Windows Vista anymore, confirming that practically the only reason for a PC is Win7.

The only thing keeping me looking at PCs for my next computer is the sheer miniscule form factor of Sony's Vaio ultraportables (I'm wearing out my second one now). The Mac Air, and rumored Mac "netbook", will likely win me over.

Sony VAIOs are the best PC hardware I've used. Avoid HP and its proprietary Windows drivers at all costs!

That said, I've made the switch to an all-Mac environment over the last year. I recently bought a Mac mini and installed Windows XP on it with Boot Camp to run a few Windows apps I needed - it makes an outstanding Windows PC.

Hmmm. Nice example of outcome based reporting. Have you considered going to work for CNN, or MSNBC?

If you really wanted all of that, with world class reliability, and very affordable prices...you should have bought a SAGER

Sony computing products are, in my experience, unreliable, too pricey, and their customer service should be renamed to Customer Disservice.

I can't argue a whole lot with this write-up... except have one question...

1600-by-1200

What an insane resolution for a 13.3 inch screen! One would need a magnifying class to work on that. Unless he is speaking of the capability, which many computers can put that out to an external monitor (assuming that is what his intent is... I don't think there is a 13 inch screen made with that sort of resolution).

How I Came to Get a PC and Not a Mac

If find the whole PC vs Mac discussion so stupid.

Both computers are now "Intel inside" or AMD. The computers are all x86 architecture. Either platform can perform what the other can. It's just a matter of taste, and if you search hard and long enough, if an application runs on one platform, an equivalent application can be found that runs on the other.

The "major" difference is in the OS. So, instead of arguing about "PC" vs "Mac", why isn't the argument about "Windows" vs "Mac OS" (or Leopard Mac OSX or whatever)? As far as computing power and the latest technology, why does anyone care about MHZs or GHZs? Most "computers" are not being bought because of their lighting fast computing power. Most machines end up being slaves to internet communications. Most of what people do nowadays is browsing the web or downloading music or downloading videos or reading or chatting or some other "online" application. Most online applications don't need a petaflop computer. Your "computing power" is not used and the speed of your "computing" is directly dependent on the speed of your internet connection. The real OS that matters the most with today's computers is the "browser".

Most of what people do today is done through a browser. My surprise is that the argument hasn't been more in the direction of the browser wars. So, instead of PC vs Mac, the TV commercials should rightfully be, "IE" vs "Safari" vs "Chrome" vs "Firefox" vs "Opera". That's where people spend more of their "computing" time. Any old OS can get you on the internet, but, through the most used application around: the browser.

I dunno, My good computer broke down and I am using the old one. I don’t get into fancy graphics, or use the computer for gaming, after all, I am old.

The computer is basically used for word processing, access to the internet, which is on linux so I do not have to worry about viruses. The only reason I use windows is to use some programs that I have acquired over the years. I still use old finance programs that I purchased in 1995. Word Perfect 6.0a still works for me, and don’t see the need to change.

So I still dual boot. Ah, Maybe quadro boot. I am using Windows Millenium, Windows XP Pro, Linux Mandrake 8.0 and SUSE 10.0. They all have their purposes for my enjoyment.

All the arguments about operating systems really doesn’t affect me, cuz I can do everything I want to do with what is available. A lot better than an IBM Selectic. I would like to try an Apple for fun, but for me I do not see the purpose of the expense.

I actually wonder how many people are really using the maximum capabilities of their computers or only want to have the newest and best thing?

For me the computer is a deliverance over a typewriter.

Blessings, Greg

I have been running XP Pro since about 6 months after it came out. I have never had to reinstall it or anything else other than a few service packs and critical updates. Auto update is turned off BTW. I can do everything I want on this computer even thought the hardware is now about 4 years behind the current, it was high end performance when new. Custom built myself.

I turn it on, run it all day, it does everything I want it to do without so much as a hiccup, and I want it to do a lot. I shut it down at end of day and tomorrow is the same.

It does video flawlessly (high end VC 4 years ago), often 50 to 60 tabs open in FireFox, one of my music playlists playing music in background...unless I am watching a streaming video, with word processor and Google Earth running also, while downloading a video in one of the open tabs. Just smoothhhhhhhh. Why would I upgrade?

I just don’t get this need to keep upgrading. To do what? Spend more money?

Of course I know about hardware and OS’s and how to protect my system, that I am sure is a big part why I have been trouble free for so long.

Oh and yes I have upgraded to hardware a few times over the years, but not in the last 4 years other than a second larger hard drive and monitor. I also ran XP Pro on my laptop for 5 1/2 years till the TFT died. I am thinking of getting a new laptop and installing XP Pro on it too.

Maybe Linux as a second OS, just for fun.

Vista nah....Leopard or Tiger, don’t make me laugh....Windows 7 .....not gonna happen!
