WASHINGTON (AFP) The United States should not impose a cap-and-trade system to battle climate change this year because it amounts to a painful tax during a deep recession, a Republican lawmaker said Wednesday.
"Now is not the time to put a national sales tax on every electric bill and every gasoline purchase," Republican Senator Lamar Alexander, who sits on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, told reporters.
"I'm open, as are several Republicans, to cap and trade, but it's getting increasingly difficult to think about it in the middle of a recession," said Alexander, who hails from Tennessee.
US President Barack Obama favors the approach, which sets a cap on the total pollutants companies can emit and then forces heavy polluters to buy credits from entities that pollute less -- creating financial incentives to fight global warming.

The GoP has a cancer within it.. as does this nation.
This is a place poor people will notice Obamanomics.
For those who STILL insist that Republican = Conservative.
I don’t understand politics in Tennessee. Better said, I don’t understand Tennessee politicians. Isn’t it time to boot Alexander into the great beyond?
Well Senator I am not open to Cap and Trade, because it’s a hoax. It;s a scam. Its selling a product that doesn’t exist.
Global Warming is a scam, and paying money to stop something that we have absolutely no control over is a ridiculous idead that would have gotten you laughed out of the country 20 years ago and should get you voted out of the Senate now.
Which sets cap's on personal freedoms and forces a free society to buy the rights to be free.
Who works for who?
Human Events has a piece on the Top 10 Rinos, he’s there.
Way over due...and Corker should be along for the ride as well.
“Hypocrite Alexander was one of the “yes” votes for that $410 billion earmark fest that was just passed by the Senate yesterday. He talks out of both sides of his mouth.”
RINOs & RATs should be made to “ride the rail” to the outskirts of D.C. in tar & feather suits! ASAP!
