Gingrich to Convert to Catholicism
Christianity Today ^ | 3/9/09 | Sarah Pullman

Buried in an large New York Times Magazine profile of Newt Gingrich is a little nugget of information: A Baptist since graduate school, Gingrich said he will soon convert to Catholicism, his wife’s faith.

At a moment when the role of religious fundamentalism in the party is a central question for reformers, Gingrich, rather than making any kind of case for a new enlightenment, has in fact gone to great lengths to placate Christian conservatives. The family-values crowd has never completely embraced Newt, probably because he has been married three times, most recently to a former Hill staff member, Callista Bisek. In 2006, though, Gingrich wrote a book called “Rediscovering God in America” — part of a new canon of work he has done reaffirming the role of religion in public life. The following year, he went on radio with the evangelical minister James Dobson to apologize for having been unfaithful to his second wife.

Kudlow and Laura Ing. have done so as well. Welcome Newt, but please leave your global warming malarkey behind now. Thanks.

I pray they have all come to the fullness of faith in Jesus Christ, not only in ‘the church.’

...not only in ‘the Church.’

No charge for corrections.

Also Judge Bork and Robert Novak. Welcome Newt. The more the merrier.

Think twice, Newt. This Church isn't as open to divorce as your other one was.

Maybe the conversion will help him. I think back to the late 80s/early 90s version of Newt and compare that one to the current version and wonder what happened to him.

That only applies if he was married in the Catholic Church.

I’m sure this will inflame the left even more against him.

Didn’t W and Tony Blair also convert?

Perhaps he can focus on being a genuine conservative as opposed to a populist.

Blair officially became Catholic (formerly he was Church of England) when he left office. There may have been constitutional issues with a British Prime Minister being Catholic.

W was raised Episcopalian (US Church of England) and became Methodist after marrying Laura.

Common thread is leaving Anglicanism.

The Church’s presumption is in favour of the validity of ALL Christian marriages, not just those contracted within the Church.

Now, I have no idea if any Gingrich’s marriages were indeed Christian, but he’s probably going to have do some work to straighten out his current situation in any event.

Blair did, but not W, to the best of my knowledge. We’d certainly welcome W.

There have been rumors about Blair, but I haven’t seen any official word. The rumors surfaced when he was PM and many said he wouldn’t do it while PM since it would amount to abandoning the official state religion. I believe he attends RC mass with wife and kids.

Regarding W, the answer is ‘no’. Perhaps you’re thinking of Jeb Bush who did convert.

Can we get Cardinal Mahoney to convert to Episcopalian?

Tony Blair did become a Catholic. President Bush has not, but it would not surprise me, if he and Laura did convert.

We used to pray for the “conversion of Russia”. I now pray for the conversion of Obama from sacrifices to Moloch.
