In a second reversal of the Bush administration, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Wednesday he is scrapping leases for oil-shale development on federal land in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.
Salazar rescinded a lease offer made last month for research, development and demonstration projects that could have led to oil-shale works on 1.9 million acres in the three states, greatly expanding the program.
"I am withdrawing that Jan. 14 solicitation because in my view it was a midnight decision, and it was flawed," Salazar told reporters on a teleconference call from Washington, D.C

War, maybe civil war.
Depression
OMG this truly is horrible.
And where are the republicans demanding that this be reversed?
It was a flawed decision. In other words, da boss man done kick mah ass! He say, “What you do dat fo, fool!”
Because now this isn’t a situation that can be fixed by political negotiation. It is not difficult to see what the end result will be...
Oops. I forgot it was a Bush offer.
During last year’s debates about more oil drilling and more domestic energy production, Democrats were against any new drilling. They said that energy companies weren’t using all of the leases they currently had, and that they should drill and explore on the land covered by existing leases.
Now this new administration is eliminating the existing leases that the oil companies were supposed to use before we started any new drilling/exploration?
And last night Obama said that we import more oil than we ever have, and that’s got to change. Exactly where are we going to get new energy resources to replace these oil imports though?
We're mad at Obama because Bush took 8 years to get this started...waiting till a week before the end of term?
Are you kidding?
Why does Salazar constantly wear a cowboy hat?
Because it covers up his extremely pointy (and empty) head!
Salazar wants to shake down the oil companies for more money. He’ll re-lease the land once they cough up some serious money to the DNC or (fill in name of liberal organization).
The article says these leases came into effect on 1/14/09, so I don’t think they’d really be considered as the “existing leases” you refer to.
Zero is doing everything possible to destroy the automobile industry, and with it goes the country.
Lock and load! Salazar doesn’t deserve my spit!
Windmills my friend. Windmills/s/
Obamanation speaks with forked tongue.
And you thought $4/gal was high... just you wait. And mark my words....these piece of sh*t dems will blame it on Bush, Cheney, Big Oil and greedy rich people. Hey it worked with this fiasco we are in now.... and our sitting president doesn’t even know who actually invented the automobile.... not to matter, neither do the 52% of losers that voted for him.... this too shall pass, but at what cost????
A little more precise, perhaps?
Why to worry?
Soon all state land will be federal for our own good in the USA.
Washington will do a better job of regulating and sustaining than states could ever want to do in the "USA" so Ken has the right idea,....
SHRED THE CONSTITUTION!
Good plan Tonto. Let’s make sure we don’t develop any of our own domestic energy resources. Let’s do everything we can to increase the cost of gasoline and other fuels. And the guy is from Colorado. When he ran for the Senate, he ran as a “centrist.” Guess that charade is over.
Obviously trying to make us energy independent. Enjoy that $10/gal gas.
Pray for America
My thoughts exactly. Every assault on progress by the Democrats is an opening for Republicans. The Democrat agenda is the same every year: make their nutty base happy so that reelection is assured come next reelection. Republicans simply have to oppose Democrats and tell the public why. Oil is going to go back up, and when it does the public is going to be receptive to domestic drilling.
Well maybe, but I think the attack on cars is the point of his spear.
For those who recall the movie.....morgan....MORGAN....
Vincent Price played the part well.
The future as I see it presently per political directive.
Once we take the country back we'll have All Sorts of untapped resources just waiting for us to use.
Always look on the bright side. *\;-)
Future: (3 months out)
Nationalized banks
$3/gallon gasoline tax increase
$60/ton carbon tax
Insurrection in the streets
Food shortages
“Oil is going to go back up, and when it does the public is going to be receptive to domestic drilling.”
I read somewhere today(very disturbing article) that Obama and the democrats have big plans to use our SOR in the speculation market. Dangerous stuff!
Here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2193862/posts
They will just flood the market if oil goes up and use up all of our reserves. They don’t care about this country. They want to remake it as a marxist dictatorship.
Wonder what will traverse the new infrastructure he's fixin to build?
Salazar shutting down the domestic oil market to enrich his Saudi friends and driving up the price to make his oil buddies from CO rich too.
((sound familiar?))
If the SOR isn’t used to fuel tanks, bombers, and generators for keeping the pentagon running in the event of a war, then what is it good for in the first place? Now if Obama and Co. think the can control the market by doing more of what Bush, Clinton, Bush, and whoever else has done, they’re bats*** insane. We’d have more chance of doing that if we drilled more oil, and I doubt that would have much of an effect.
Bush 2 did not tap the SOR...He filled them up! What are you talking about?
Exactly where are we going to get new energy resources to replace these oil imports though?
pixie dust.
With the liberal aversion to nuclear, and already having declared war against the coal industry, and now taking away leases, this administration is forcing another energy crisis. At what would be the response of this administration? More demonization of the industry, maybe nationalization, and definitely further reductions in energy production.
Up is down and down is up. Good is evil and evil is good (woe to those...)
What comes next?
Worst. President. Ever.
OK, not Bush 2. Clinton tapped into it several times IIRC. But frankly, I think it’s not a serious effort to keep oil prices low but just a cheap political trick.
“But frankly, I think its not a serious effort to keep oil prices low but just a cheap political trick”
Of course it is...it is also dangerous to our national security. Obama is going to ruin our economy and then get us all killed. He is either a fool or an enemy of this country. One or the other. I am starting to think ‘the other’.
This Administration has to go, and all of its lousy proposals along with it. The next election can’t get here soon enough.
There is only one reason why the Democrats do stuff like this, and that is because they are owned by so-called environmentalists. And the Democrats hope to ride the global warming scare into the future.
Why are you blaming Bush for something Obama is doing?
Camels. For his brethren.
These guys want us to force us to go green by cutting off all potential sources of energy. They really want us to be serfs again.
Yeah, funny me I actually hold Obama responsible for his actions as president.
I tend to agree, but not because he wants to waste time meddling with the SOR. The problem is there is nothing to stop him with meddling with everything else.
I know the civil war will begin at my house the day they come for my guns.
If Obama was a medical doctor, I think his school’s motto would be: “First, Do as much harm as possible and don’t stop until your patient is dead, dead, dead”.
Your post is true but the pubbies didn’t really use forty years of Dim oil drilling obstruction the last two cycles and during the presidential election and they won’t use it this time. I don’t think they know how. Honestly, it is not their spine that is at fault it is their mentality or lack thereof. I will do what I can for the pubbies b/c there is no other choice and end of freedom is near. They cannot win if they don’t fight tooth and nail and that includes attacking the global warming lie. Carbon caps. UN sovereignty over our nation. Education, the leftâs policies have ruled education since the sixties and it is a TOTAL FAILURE that costs ever more money to support teacher’s unions but not a word. There are so many issues the left could be eviscerated with but the pubbies don’t use any of them. Gads what a mess.
Obama is just a student of Saul Alinsky. Some of us knew this was coming...We tried to warn America..but they were too stupid and ‘Hopemotized’ to see it or admit it.
Not blaming Bush, just not crediting him for waiting till the last minute, either.
Why not do this in, say, Feb 2005 and let the companies get in and involved for four years so it's harder to get them out?
Or maybe in 2002.
Or anytime before the last week of Bush's two terms?
