My sources tell me President Obama had a heads-up on Tom Daschle's tax problems nine days before they came out in the press.
I'm also told that Daschle offered to step aside as Obama's health and human services secretary nominee before the story got out, but that Obama, who thinks of Daschle as some kind of father figure, said "no."
If that's how it happened, then the new president wins the Rookie of the Week award, hands down.
He should have accepted Daschle's offer then and there.
Obama was being loyal. But in this business, sooner or later you learn that when someone tells you they have a problem, it's best to let them go.
Instead, Obama bet that Daschle would survive because of his personal ties to senators, with whom he served for all those years.
He didn't realize that all the firepower the White House was using to keep Timothy Geithner from being sunk as treasury secretary over his own tax problems was going to leave them nothing - on Capitol Hill or among the broader public - with which to save Daschle.
So when Daschle's problems finally did come out, the goodwill was gone and the press was loaded for bear.
All of this may or may not matter in the long run. But it does show that Obama, who had hit the ball out of the park every time for the past year, is in a whole new league now, and he's a rookie there.
And like all rookies, he is going to make mistakes.

-—seems to me everybody forgets that Two-Ton Tommy was angling to be vice-president with his early support of The One—
“get yo skinny white ass under the granma bus, tommy”
Ya’ Call Ray Nagin for some more busses.
Hussein wasn’t being “loyal.” He was being arrogant and self-absorbed. After all, as the Messiah, no one can question his appointments. The MSM will see to that. But remarkably, even the billing and cooing by super-RINOs like McConnell et al weren’t enough to get this thug through the process.
Obmamarama-dingdong is a product of Chicago politics, where thuggery and corruption in the ‘governing’ class are a given and are not considered an impediment.
Our rookie President thought that since “he won”, he could ramrod anything through.
politics in HI are a bit errrr...odd as well.
Barry isn't a Rookie, he is clueless. And it looks like he also suffers a bit in the ‘learning curve’ business as well.
Just wait till he gets really gets dug in and starts messing with “Health Care”
Obama thinks...or Obama stinks...You be the judge.
Obama should have dropped Obama.
It wasn’t the tax evasion that prompted Daschle to cut and run. When it comes to unpaid taxes, democrats have no shame when exposed. Their sense of entitlement makes them realize that they’d be confirmed without any problem, and their knowledge of the GOP’s spinelessness, further convinces them of it.
If the NYT was willing to report on unpaid taxes for Daschle, what was all of the dirt they were unwilling to print. That’s the probe that had Daschle convinced that it was time to redeploy. He and his lobbyist wife have been filthy for years, going way back to the senate days.
Barry might be clueless but his handlers aren’t. They got their man in as head of the Census Bureau. Once all the illegals are counted and ACORN registers them, you’ll see Democrats in power for your lifetime.
Nice Monday morning quarterbacking there Willie. I don’t think I need to waste any time trying to find out if he had previously dared to criticize The One over His appointment of Dashle during the week or so when it was obvious that Dashle was a crook.
When Willie Brown is holding your feet to the ethical fire, you, yes you Zero, have completely failed.
