The expected appointment of a special envoy to breathe new life into Israeli-Palestinian negotiations could split the pro-Israel center while pleasing the Jewish left and outraging the right. The schism could be particularly deep if, as widely reported this week, President Barack Obama appoints former Sen. George Mitchell to do the job.
Some Jewish leaders say the very qualities that may appeal to the Obama administration - Mitchell's reputation as an honest broker - could spark some unhappiness, if not outright opposition, from some pro-Israel groups.
"Sen. Mitchell is fair. He's been meticulously even handed," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "But the fact is, American policy in the Middle East hasn't been 'even handed' - it has been supportive of Israel when it felt Israel needed critical US support."

No mention by Besser, however, of the 800 pound gorilla in the room: Mitchell's Arab-American heritage and cultural roots and his speaking to and participation with Arab groups when he was in the US Senate.
If a Jewish lefty like Foxman is concerned about Mitchell, I think it can be said that not very many pro-Israel people are particularly fond of him.
George Mitchell? Is he the one that had the courage to end an investigation when it look like Kofi Annan might be implicated, but never backed down from finding out if baseball players used steroids?
That’s what Dems are all about... divide and conquer.
At least Mitchell isn’t running Disney and influencing ABC News.
Isn’t he the one that has Middle East blood somewhere in his line and I can’t remember what his toady son did.

Interesting that you mentioned Disney. I recall Mitchell was on the Disney Board of Directors several years ago. Is this "fair" guy still on the board?
Not just "somewhere in his line." His mother was Lebanese - born in Lebanon, I believe.
When hacks like Mitchell do investigations, the results are pretty much determined beforehand. Then the facts are adjusted to justify the conclusions already determined.
Thanks for the ping justice.
On August 10, 2007, it was reported that Senator Mitchell had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Didn’t know he had prostate cancer. Nowadays, though, the cure rate as a whole for prostate cancer is much higher than it was a generation ago. Apparently, he feels well enough to go to the Middle East as O’s envoy or his name wouldn’t have come up in that connection.
True, an older man can live out his life with it and it won’t be the cause of his death nowdays.

"But the fact is, American policy in the Middle East hasn't been 'even handed' -- it has been supportive of Israel when it felt Israel needed critical US support."American policy shouldn't be 'even handed' -- unless, by even-handed is meant, holding the Arabs to the same standards of ethics. Because that's something we haven't been doing. Thanks js93.
In the meetings Ive participated in with George Mitchell, he made it clear he sympathized with the Palestinian position over the Israeli position, and blamed Israel more than the Palestinians for the lack of progress toward peace, said Morton Klein,

He was chairmen of the Board. I presume he cannot be chairman and do this job. But, I don’t know that for a fact.
yup, unless it is already a very advanced case they say that men usually live many more years with prostate cancer and that “you die with prostate cancer but not OF prostate cancer” — not that I would wish it on anyone, and there are a certain percentage of cases that will progress more rapidly than others, but I understand that a large majority of cases nowadays are either highly treatable or at least survivable for many years.
