Falls rescuers pull couple from frozen Niagara Gorge (Not as friendly to illegals as Rio Grande)

Niagara Falls firefighters rappelled into the Niagara Gorge in frigid temperatures before dawn today to rescue a man and a woman who were stuck on the icy Niagara River, authorities said.

The woman allegedly was trying to sneak across the border from Canada by walking across the frozen river under the Rainbow Bridge. The man was apparently trying to help her when they realized they couldn't make it back up the steep, icy wall of the gorge...

"I don't know what was crazier," said Falls Fire Chief William Mackay, "the operation we had or the people who thought they could walk across the Niagara River."

I wonder what it would cost to divert the Mississippi riverinto a moat where the Rio Grande used to be? Probably more than to just build the fence, I suppose.

The gorge there is straight DOWN and straight UP! Ice is on everything cause of the mist from the Falls. I hope they charge them the $10,000 fee for the rescue operation! STUPID PEOPLE!!

In Fall 2007, I was with a group hiking down to the gorge about 1/2 mile north of the Falls... One of our group decided to use the emergency cable to climb back up instead of walking the steps like the rest of us. He never told anyone and just left the group. 911 was called and many people showed up. The guy lied his way out of the $10,000 fine.

Hauptmann Franz von Werra managed to cross the St. Lawrence in his quest to reach the US in January, 1941.

Rainbow Bridge is right below the falls.

The "Whirlpool Aero Car" is further downstream.

Moat? You want that with running water or still? If you settle for running water, you need a pipeline big enough to carry the Mississippi river about 1000 miles west from about Vicksburg to El Paso. That does not help anything west of El Paso.

You want a “still water moat”? You need levee walls built up to about 3,760 ft above sea level, or a sea level canal.

We have Cubans getting here over 90 miles of water. I doubt a moat is the way to go. Fence or minefield has got to be cheaper.

I suppose you are right.... :(

And with this President and congress I would imagine we are actually looking at amnesty.

Underneath the Rainbow Bridge, a frozen Niagara River. One that 50-year-old Linda Summerfield, of England, daringly and successfully crossed Friday night from Canada.

Her fiance, 38-year-old Mark Prince, waited for her on the shoreline of the American side.

Around 4 p.m. Friday, Prince was deported from Canada to the United States after being convicted on weapons charges.

Summerfield wanted to be with her fiance.

Border patrol agents say she first tried to gain entry by crossing the pedestrian bridge. But, Rainbow Bridge officials wouldn’t let her in. She didn’t have the proper travel documentation.

Both have been arraigned in Federal Court.

Linda Summerfield on charges if illegal entry, her fiance Mark Prince on conspiracy to illegal entry and adding and abeiting.

Summerfield allegedly crossed the Niagara River, and then Prince, already in the U.S., apparently went down to get her. The Niagara Falls Fire Chief says he went down a pipe, but they could not get back up. After a 911 call, rescue workers were on the scene, and it took them about five hours to bring the two out. They went down on ropes and used baskets to bring them to safety. After treatment, Summerfield and Prince were taken into custody. Summerfield now faces illegal entry charges. Prince is charged with conspiracy to illegal entry and aiding and abetting. Both will be in court tommorow.
