Pendleton Could Become Home to Guantanamo Detainees
orange county register ^ | January 15th, 2009 | Dena Bunis

Camp Pendleton is apparently on the list of potential new homes for Guantanamo Bay detainees if and when President-elect Barack Obama makes good on his campaign promise to close the terrorist detention center.

The Associated Press is reporting that Obama will issue an executive order during his first week in office. As soon as he signs it the new administration will have to figure out what to do with the 250 al Qaeda and Taliban combatants.

And three House members from San Diego put Defense Secretary Bob Gates on notice this week that they don’t want to see Pendleton as the new home for these folks.

“”This decision could seriously endanger the mission,’’ at Pendleton, wrote Reps. Darrell Issa, Duncan Hunter, and Brian Bilbray.

I talked with Issa’s chief of staff Dale Neugebauer last night who said the Vista congressman – who used to represent part of Orange County – believes these prisoners should be returned to the places they were captured. So if we picked them up in Afghanistan, they should go back there.

Issa believes, he said, that having those enemy combatants there would “detract from the Marines’ mission at a time when they are engaged in armed conflicts in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

The letter also points out that there are 14,000 military family members at Camp Pendleton and that it wouldn’t be good for Marines serving overseas to be fearful for their families if the Guantanamo detainees were sent there.

There isn’t agreement among those who sent the letter about what to do with Guantanamo. Hunter, who is a freshman lawmaker taking over from his father, also Duncan Hunter, comes to Congress fresh from multiple tours in Iraq and he has been quoted as saying the detainee camp in Cuba should be maintained.

Isn’t there a wing of the White House that could be converted for this purpose? Let the Obamas coddle the little dears!

I fear that, in retrospect, someone will look back on this time and conclude that America (or at least its Democrat leadership) was in effect “begging” for America to be attacked again. I really do.

I get cranky before the coffee kicks in.

I guess I’m not getting how the alleged cruelty (or whatever the lefties’ supposed problem at Gitmo is) is geographically based. How does physically moving the detainees change anything?

Yeah, they would fit right in on the south side of Chicago, probably no one would even know they are there.

US Constitutional rights for terrorists, how cool is Odummer when it comes to his buddies.

There's not a single Congress critter who's volunteered his own district for this purpose.

So it's up to the President to make the pick ~ and morally and ethically that place can be nowhere else than Chicago, near the University of Chicago ~ and they even have some vacant buildings for the purpose ~ Obama's house will shortly be empty, and Rezkos can be made so quickly ~ Bill Ayers?

Send them all to the federal prison at Marion.

Treat them the same way Gotti was treated. 23 hours a day in a cell for the rest of their natural lives.

They could build a multi floor tent city on Rezko’s lot next to the 0be house.

When they are on US soil, the ACLU-types will have more access to them. The courts will be tied up for years, and the lawyers will make their money.

Who cares if Americans die because of this absurdity?

Berkeley or Oakland would be an appropriate place, but nearby Frisco with its currently underutilized Alcatraz would do. If any of the Gitmo detainees escaped, all those coded and uncoded pinkos would flock around them, easily leading the authorities to them through their raucous adulation. Of course, it would be hard for the authorities to do anything about recapturing them in a sanctuary city.

I say we let Sheriff Joe Arpaio “take care” of the bastards, in his own special way, of course.

Why not Alcatraz? There are plenty of people nearby that would support them in the local area, and it would give the US military plenty of practice once CA is sealed off from the rest of the Union (for everyone’s safety).

I’m sure the Marines will put up with having feces and urine thrown at them and being spit upon. Yea, the jihadists will like it there, I’m sure.
