Iran pushes Hamas to reject truce with Israel

Iran is exerting heavy pressure on Hamas not to accept the Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire with Israel, an Egyptian government official said on Sunday. The official told The Jerusalem Post by phone that two senior Iranian officials who visited Damascus recently warned Hamas leaders against accepting the proposal.

A Fatah official in Ramallah on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Hamas and described its leaders as "criminals. Speaking to The Jerusalem Post on condition of anonymity, the Fatah official denounced Hamas as a "black and bloody militia" that was responsible for the "catastrophe" in the Gaza Strip.

The official warned that failure to crush Hamas completely would undermine Fatah and pave the way for the collapse of moderate Arab regimes.

This is of course exactly opposite to what the pundits and the majority of the appeasing European political elite are saying. Do they know what they are talking about? /rhetorical question

(BTW Fatah is far from moderate, but that is beside the point here.)

France urges European observers to monitor Gaza

The French foreign minister said Monday that European military observers should be sent to Gaza to monitor any eventual cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

Kouchner also said France is talking with Iran in a bid to indirectly pressure Hamas, viewed as a terrorist group by the U.S. and EU, into halting its rocket attacks on Israel. "We are talking to everyone," Kouchner said. He said he talked to Iranian officials Sunday about Gaza.

Apparently Iran is getting active in the "drive for peace" - the Swedish FM wrote on his blog that he had received a call by the Iranian FM Saturday. And at the same time Iran is pressuring the Hamas not to give in until they (Iran) can get the most out of a "truce". Iran is playing the European diplomats like a fiddle at the moment.
