The way the Brits tell it, Edison was a footnote...
Mercury batteries have been banned because they contained mercury. But now compact fluorescents are being mandated, and by the way they contain mercury. And my guess is that the average household will possess more mercury from the lights than they would have from mercury batteries (used only in button-sized camera batteries and exotic test equipment).
There’s SOCIALISM for ya’, folks. Coming to a country near you!
Meanwhile.......the police can’t handle a New Year’s Eve because of underfunding and understaffing. Same goes for the NHS. Lightbulbs are more important. Sick.
This same ban on incandescent light bulbs is coming to the US, starting with the 100W bulb in 2012 and ending with the 40W bulb in 2014. Bush signed it into law on December 18, 2007.
Mercury poisoning was a hoax anyway, just ask the local mad hatter.
The ultimate NANNY/POLICE STATE marches on.
Every time the local home improvement store puts 4 packs of REAL bulbs on sale for $1 (or less) I’ll head down there with my forklift. I might have to throw out some of my plastic sheeting, duct tape, MREs and light resistant spring water, but I will be mercury-free and well lit during the Obam-a-pocalypse.
Every house I have been in that uses these is like being in a cave. I consider the illumination to be very poor. They buzz and have to warm up to come on. You can’t use a dimmer with them. A very poor choice.
Dimbulbs for dim bulbs!
California has outlawed the incandescent as of 2010. I am currently stocking up. I hate fluorescent bulbs of any type. They do indeed trigger a migraine for me. But of course these are the same genious legislators who brought us the ever popular MTBE to help cut pollution. We are soooo screwed
I’ve been stocking up on incandescent bulbs so that I have enough for at least ten years. One of the marks of a burgeoning banana republic will be the appearance of a black markets for goods like light bulbs.
Does anyone realize that almost all CFL bulbs are made in China?
LED is safer, practically shockproof and is not limited to a blue look.
If enough production was started the price would come down but no instead we are addicted to Chinese imports.
There is an extreme limited amount of LED lamps available for home use using 120VAC, however if an educated person was to install a low voltage 12VDC wiring then it does illuminate a new area literally, many boats, RVs now use LED lighting.
CFL is bad, its poisonous, and usually does not live up to the hours rated, almost every 5 or 7 year CFL I have bought dies after two years.
Most LEDs will not even start to minorly dim after 50,000 to 100,000 hours which is over 11 years.
You can get incandescent light bulbs rated for 25,000 hours that are used by the hospitality industry. If you use them for an average of 7 hours a day theyll burn out in just a little under 10 years and cost about a buck or less per bulb depending on how many you buy.

Once you stock up all youll have to do is watch out for the light bulb police wholl be monitoring everyone who might be using those unauthorized, evil incandescents!
