Dorothy Glenn decorates her home in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, with hundreds of festive lights every year, including a giant tree and a 4ft Santa Claus.
But this year she was astonished when an employee of South Tyneside Homes called at her house and informed her that the decorations she was displaying might be offending her neighbours.
The association has now apologised to Mrs Glenn and started an investigation but a spokesman insisted that removing Christmas lights was not part of their policy.
Mrs Glenn, a 41-year-old mother-of-three, said: "I put the lights up in the first week of November and then recently a uniformed housing worker was outside, and it looked like he was counting my decorations.
"When I went outside he said that the lights were 'offensive to the community'. If I was offending anyone I could understand why he was telling me, but nobody has complained.
"My neighbours are Bengali and Chinese and I know that they love the lights, the children will always point them out when they walk past."
Mrs Glenn, who has lived at the property for four years with son Owen, 19, and daughters Samira, 21, and Chelsea, 15, said she valued her close relationship with neighbours and enjoyed living in a community with people from different backgrounds.
She said: "I told him that I am far from a racist and that I wouldn't be taking the lights down. I'm shocked, annoyed and upset. At the end of the day, it's the festive season and they're staying."

Its only things related to Christianity that are illegal.
The UK is lost, I fear — and on so many fronts.
hear, hear!
Perhaps there's a burkha in the hood.
Claim she put them up early for the Hindu Festival of Lights, and then see if they complain.
Celebrating Christmas is racist? Dhimmitude is on the march.
I like the two movies where the lights are just too much for the neighbors, Chevy Chase in one, and was it Joe Pesci in the newer flick?
Other than that, and fire hazards aside, people should mind thier own buisness.
“There will always be an England. . . .”
It just won’t be English.
When your country and culture are no longer worth fighting for then you are no longer worthy of having either.
I just got back from Borders. They sent me a coupon for boxed DVD sets but of course it didn’t apply to the one I wanted. So when the manager was called, I ranted at her about the extremely tacky and offensive neon purple, glittery Virgin Mary statues. She didn’t seem at all concerned. Not going back.
I’m no longer surprised by any of the crazy news I read from great Britain. They’ve taken Political Correctness to the most extreme, absurd levels and then throw up their hands in feigned outrage when the BNP wins local elections.
The UK is done.
The only ones that claim a willingness to fight for her are the ones that fled.
The UK is now a islamic enclave.
doesn’t state what race or religion the worker was but I would guess that the person is white and is a radical left wing loon .
It’s christmas and I make it a point in every shop I go to to wish the worker merry christmas and if some no life tool doesn’t like it then tough but Jesus is why we have Christmas
BNP winning elections is actually good news for Britain.

I don’t say happy holidays at any pother time like Halloween, new year etc and I won;t say it for Christmas either.
other day a guy said that he was having a holiday party and when I asked for what holiday he looked clueless and stunned.

alright mate
If anyone is offended over Christmas then they seriously need to get a life.
It;s pathetic that some won’t say Christmas.
It’s Christmas time and I see more and more people saying it with car stickers and in public to screw off those get a life folk
hundreds of festive lights every year,
'Appropriate' is in the eye of the beholder. One might make the case for 'overkill to the point of looking tacky or garish' (we have some houses in our neighborhood that my wife and I place in this category) but 'offensive' seems to be a bit of a stretch. In either case, the solution is the same - remind oneself that "it is not about me."
Be happy that your neighbor is enjoying the holiday. If the lights are still glaring in mid February, then perhaps a polite comment would be well received.
