California passes rules for cleaner diesel trucks

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – California on Friday became the first state in the country to force big diesel trucks to clean up their exhaust, despite warnings from truckers the new rules will force them out of business.

About a million vehicles, from big rigs to school buses, are affected by the new rules, which will begin taking effect in 2011 and do not require further ratification.

Some vehicles will have to start retrofitting engines in 2011 and some older trucks will be forced into retirement starting in 2012. By 2023, all trucks must meet 2010 new engine emission standards.

The rules regulate smog-causing oxides of nitrogen, which are greenhouse gases, and particulate matter, which is toxic. The California Air Resources Board estimated the regulations would cost about $5.5 billion. It put the health benefits of cleaner air at $48 billion to $69 billion over the next couple of decades.

The move by California, the leading U.S. state on climate change, complements a detailed strategy to cut carbon emissions that the board passed on Thursday as part of its sweeping plan to cut carbon emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.

While the federal government has no such rules for trucks or carbon, President-elect Barack Obama has said that climate change will be a priority when he takes office in January.

That should be fun to watch, when shelves go bare because there aren't enough trucks to get product there -- or prices start skyrocketing, forcing more of the idiots who voted for these lawmakers to flee to places like my state (where the d*mned locusts will do it all over again).

California needs to pass rules limiting morons in the State government as well as morons like Pelosi, Feinstein, and Boxer representing the State. We seem to have an over abundance of clueless politicians in this state just like Massachusetts and Illinois.

NY and Mass. liberals have exported more than their fair share Westward Ho who ran for office here, and then screwed this place up something terrible. Gray Davis for one (NY) and an assortment of Kennedys in the Schwarzenegger mob.

side note .. Al FRanken, born in NY.

California will lose its trucking industry and then gladly pay out of state/country businesses to do it for them... or starve.

Unfortunately, California "leads the nation" in all this crap....if it flies here, it'll fly where you live, eventually. You can bet on it. History doesn't lie.

How long will we contniue to elect the dumbest among us? They are now predicting a nearly 50 billion dollar budget deficit, and the morons in the California Legislature are still attacking businesses.

Hhhhmmmm ....

I wonder if we could get some laws passed that require Californicator’s to stay in their own da*n state.

I’m absolutely tired of them screwing up Colorado.

The only consolation is them many of them return their mortal remains to the earth after the first snow of the year. Most of these folks have never driven in the snow and seem to believe that 4WD vehicles can magically defy the laws of physics.

LOL, the only issue I would have with such a law is that I would never have been able to escape from Kalifornia. (I didn't move there willingly --I was not quite old enough to have a say-- but when the time came I Got Out.)

Most of these folks have never driven in the snow and seem to believe that 4WD vehicles can magically defy the laws of physics.

We see them all the time here in the Seattle area. Generally the accidents are not fatal but newcomers, whether from no-snow realms like CA or from old-hands realms like CO, are frequently surprised at the treachery of Seattle roads even with only a couple inches of snowfall. (Snowfalls here often result in "snow/slush on ice," occasionally water on ice, and "black ice" is a frequent hazard.)
