Harvard to present Kennedy with honorary degree [Barf Alert]

Harvard University will bestow an honorary degree today on Senator Edward M. Kennedy at a special convocation.

The ceremony will feature Harvard President Drew Faust and Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer as speakers, and musical performances by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Harvard students. Kennedy will join an elite group who has received honorary degrees at special Harvard convocations, including George Washington, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Mandela. In today's Globe, columnist James Carroll described, "why this honor is fitting, and why he belongs in such historic company."

Kennedy had been scheduled to receive the degree at Harvard's commencement last spring but could not attend because he was recuperating from brain surgery. Kennedy, who graduated from Harvard in 1956, was "enormously grateful" for the honor.

At the graduation ceremony, Faust described Kennedy as an "extraordinary person" who is "admired by colleagues on both sides of the aisle as one of the nation's most able, energetic, and influential lawmakers."

"He has without doubt been one of our most tireless advocates for education - and higher education in particular - passionately committed to opportunity for all, and to the excellence of America's universities," Faust said.

The senator has maintained close ties to his alma mater, helping to create Harvard's Institute of Politics -- which honors his brother, President John F. Kennedy -- and serving on its board for decades.

Ranking up their with George Washington and Winston Churchill?

Let's see:

Gets kicked out of Harvard for two years because he had someone else take his spanish exam.

Leaves woman to drown; makes numerous calls without calling the police; gets neck brace in less than 12 hours

With his nephews has sex on the lawn with a woman they met at a bar.

Yes, Ted Kennedy is clearly a towering figure /sarc

You mean the same school that threw him out for cheating? Or was that Yale?

Bullsh*t.

Kennedy has been a viciously partisan, hateful liar who has soiled the integrity of Congress over his entire career. He is no hero, no role model and is void of a single shred of integrity.

The only ‘award’ he deserves is a jail sentence for killing somebody and getting away with it.

Is one allowed to claim a school as his alma mater if they were expelled from it?

A degree in mixology? A medal maybe for the world’s strongest and most durable liver...but a degree? Don’t think so.

Harvard seems to have no shame. First they give us Hussein, and now this.

Which proves: anyone can succeed in America - a bootlegger’s son becomes a Senator and hero after killing a young woman and a Kenyan boy can become President of the United States.

I guess that makes TWO honorary degrees from Harvard for Teddy the Red-nosed Senator.

And yes, it was Harvard. You can go to the campus and see the “Please don’t kick my Teddy out of College” library, more commonly known as the “Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Library”

At the graduation ceremony, Faust described Kennedy as an "extraordinary person" who is "admired by colleagues on both sides of the aisle as one of the nation's most able, energetic, and influential lawmakers."

Who are these Republicans on the OTHER side of the aisle who admire Ted Kennedy? John McCain crossed the aisle to join HIM. Ergo, John McCain was not on the OTHER side of the aisle.

Hahaha! After kicking him out for hiring someone to take his Spanish final, the blowhards at Whorvard U. are going to give him an honorary degree! That is laughable.

Don’t blame the administrators behind this decision. They were only 8 years old when that happened.

Perfectly said. And by God, it needed to be said.

I’m afraid this makes me think less of the only decent, or formerly decent, person involved in this caricature of an awards ceremony, Yo-Yo Ma.
