The Mumbai, India terrorist attacks should serve as a reminder that terrorism is real, tangible, and a threat everywhere...waiting only for the right opportunity to explode. And, try as we all do to engage in denial, the reality is that it is only a matter of time before a Mumbai-style event occurs on American soil.
Back in 1993, right after the first World Trade Center bombing, I was talking with a friend of mine who was raised in Israel. I opined that it would be a relatively simple matter for terrorists to stage simultaneous attacks on, say, a dozen shopping centers around the country. And not just in New York, Washington D.C. or L.A. For maximum "terror" they would include a mall in Omaha, a high-end store in suburban Atlanta, a Wal-Mart in Oklahoma, a shopping center in Memphis. In other words, the heart of Middle-America.
Why? Simple - to destroy our sense of security, our misguided belief that we are safe in Des Moines and Fargo because "terrorists only attack places like New York." The message of these attacks on the country's hitherto untouched hinterlands would be this:
"We can get to you...anywhere."
The body count from the attacks themselves could range from bad to trulyt horrific, but the economic devastation created would be even more far reaching. If only 5% of the people who normally go to the malls to shop decided to stay home, the impact would be enormous.
Sure, there might actually be an increase in Internet shopping, but the fallout from all those "brick and mortar" stores suddenly faced with decreasing revenues would reach far beyond the stores themselves. The affects would roar through our already weakened economy like a financial tsunami.
It's so diabolically simple that I'm amazed they haven't done it so far. After all, I'm no rocket scientist, and if I can come up with the idea, the terrorists most certainly could as well. And the odds are, they already have. Does anyone seriously believe that Minnesota's monstrously huge "Mall of America" does not appear scribbled on some terrorist's notepad under the heading "potential targets."
Beyond the bloodshed and the economic damage, the threat to our civil liberties would also be drastically increased. With a Congress under Democratic control, and a President Obama, with his documented anti-gun and anti-self defense views, odds are that one of their first responses to a Mumbai type of assault would be, you guessed it, gun control. And lots of it.
The anti-gun establishment news media would jump on board in a New York minute. And no amount of reasoning would likely prevail against the onslaught of the media blitz that would surely follow. They will be salivating.
Talking heads will ask the idiotic "Where did they get their guns" question. And endlessly repeated video of a sobbing mother, holding her dead child in a blood soaked blanket, will roll over cooler-headed arguments with ease.
And they won't care that you're a Democrat, even if you do have an Obama sticker on your car - if you're a gun owner, you'll be on "the list."
So for the sake of our people, and our liberties, this is one time I pray to God that I do not get to say "I told you so."
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Or what about at Obamas coronation
I’ve always said that if the Muzzies really had thought things out, to truly demoralize the public, 9-11 would have been on a Saturday at 2:00 EDT. One plane into Ohio Stadium during an Ohio State football game, another into the Mall of America, another into Disney World and the fourth into Yankee Stadium.
It would seem feasible for a group of terrorists to attack an American shopping mall, entering many entrances and by shooting and using hand grenades they could easily kill hundreds.
Very likely al Qaeda has plans for something larger than the Twin Towers and Pentagon attack.
...and WHEN they do this...Hussein will apologize to the families of any of the terrorist killed and give them reparations.
I am not sure how two armed men could protect an entire mall, but given my experience, it seems that the industry has changed and that we are somewhat prepared should there be an attempt at a mass shooting.
Agreed. And it wouldn't have to be shopping centers. I was concerned about hotels being a prime target...not big targets, but enough to keep people on edge, never knowing what small target might be hit.
It seems that the cat is out of the bag now, and that's not good. They also realize that with a small expenditure, they can get us to borrow/devalue our currency by trillions of dollars, and the economic damage is the true intent, not any attention-seeking.
Strategic thinkers will realize why the departure of W is not necessarily something for Al-Q to celebrate, as their goal is not to kill Americans, but to destroy America. President Bush has done a good job in reacting as they wanted--weakening us financially.
There aren't enough soldiers in the world to disarm us.
It won't be soldiers doing the disarming, and it won't be police. It will be The People.
I had predicted the Super Bowl, but when it was the Twin Towers, I realized that made more sense and I should have seen it. They tend to repeat their targets, and also wouldn't have realized the impact of the Super Bowl. Hitting the Oscars would have hurt their allies, and so would the Super Bowl. So, it made sense...and I won't express additional thoughts in case anyone reading might get ideas.
It was tried on 9/11. We wiped out two countries in response. Hasn’t happened again.
I doubt they will try Memphis. My guess is the Muzzies would get their a*ses shot off if they attacked anywhere in TN. :-)
Did you try reporting the thief's license # to the store's management (where the merchandise was stolen)?
I would think those personnel would be more interested in the theft.
Well, here in IN we got a shall-issue policy. I have one, and I’m carrying even to go see my barber, not to mention especially going to the mall.
That said - I really would have thought they’d have tried such a mall attack LOOOONG time ago. It seems too easy to stage and would have maximum effect on the economy as it would probably succeed in reducing consumer spending a few % pts.
It is a testament to the dilligence and ability of agencies that protect us that it hasn’t happened yet.
Article makes me think about this forum and others that have old accounts showing up and new asking about what new gun should I get or I just stocked up.
In cyberspace we have no idea who these accounts really belong too.
So the MSM is writing about all the right wing gun posts on stocking up when the possiblility is these posters could be anti American terrorists trying to bring gun buying sales gone wild look like pre O Potus gun stocking uppers.
Uh, wasn't Manhattan first?
There was a hijacking in India using something like box cutters before 9/11. I think there is a good chance that what works in India will be tried in the United States in the future.
Should that occur, within the hour, Mecca and Medina should be cities no more. They should be smoldering craters..
