How do I get hold of a real person at Homeland Security? - Vanity

Posted on 11/29/2008 12:28:00 PM PST by Ellendra

Lately someone has started adding me to certain Yahoo groups without my permission. At first I thought it was just gibberish, and I reported it to Yahoo Abuse. FYI: don't bother, they have a computer replying to their email with the same questions over and over that you already answered, nobody even bothers reading your complaints. I tried just leaving the groups myself, but I keep getting added to more of them.

On a whim I plugged some of the gibberish into an online translator. It turned out to be a mixture of middle-eastern languages (croatian, slavic, arabic, etc) discussing helicopter components! It still didn't make much sense, but the translators I found were very limited, its possible someone who speaks the language would do better.

That was 2 weeks ago. I immediately sent that message to the Homeland Security tip line, but there has been no response whatsoever. Not even a form email saying "Yes, we got your message". Nothing.

I keep getting these emails from more groups every day. I've been saving them, but how do I get them to someone who will actually do something with them?

middle-eastern languages (croatian, slavic, arabic, etc)

Croatian is a Slavic language - and neither can be properly called by any stretch of the imagination "Middle Eastern."

Sorry, but due to the Patriot Act, I will not communicate on the Internet with people who are on the watch list.

Have you changed your Yahoo password? No one should be able to add your screen name to Groups without a valid login on the account.

OK ... obviously someone has hacked your account.

Have you tried changing your password? Think of a song, for example. ... Jingle Bells. Choose the first letter from the first phrase, then add some characters to the mess. You will wind up with a simple to remember, yet almost impossible password to hack.

If you use my example, "Jingle Bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way"; then upper case 123, then lower case 123; would give you:

JBjbjatw!@#123 ... as an example.

My apologies, looks like I need to dig out that atlas again.

How about “Languages of regions where American troops have done peace-keeping missions in the last 20 years”?

Thank you, smacking myself in the head for missing the obvious! lol

Just sent the local office an email with one of the weird messages included. Figured that’s easier than me trying to describe what it says when I can’t read it.

Wouldn't that be about as non-specific as saying "languages of countries in which McDonald's franchises are in business?"

I’ve changed my password since this started. It must be possible to add people somehow, I’ll have to check with the moderators that I know.

Make a joke while you’re getting on an airplane. That usually gets their attention.
