Crazy About Guns: The press spooks its readers about increased gun purchases
Slate ^ | November 13, 2008 | Jack Shafer

Firearms scare almost everybody. But no demographic gets more wiggy about handguns, shotguns, and rifles than journalists. Ever since the Washington Post ("Gun Sales Thriving in Uncertain Times," Oct. 27) put the idea into circulation that the election and economic turmoil were spurring an increase in gun and ammo sales, a score of other news outlets have published their takes on the topic.

The Salt Lake Tribune got there on Nov. 6 ("Election Triggers Upsurge in Military-Like Firearms Sales"), the New York Times on Nov. 7 ("On Concerns Over Gun Control, Gun Sales Are Up"), the Associated Press ("Fears of Democrat Crackdown Lead to Gun Sales Boom") and Reuters on Nov. 8 ("Obama Win Triggers Run on Guns in Many Stores"), the Kansas City Star on Nov. 9 ("Election's Outcome Triggers Record Sales at Gun Shops"), the Anchorage Daily News on Nov. 10 ("Armed and Nervous in Alaska"), FoxNews.com ("Gun Owners Stockpiling Over Fear of Democratic Weapon Bans") and CNN.com on Nov. 11 ("Gun Sales Surge After Obama's Election"), the Chicago Tribune ("Obama Win Triggers Run on Guns") and the Globe and Mail on Nov. 12 ("Obama Win Spurs U.S. Gun Sales Boom"). And that's just a partial list.

The foundation upon which these outlets build their stories is solid: The primary measurement of gun purchases shows that sales are rising this year. Federal law requires licensed gun dealers to submit background check requests of all purchasers to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The Post reports that "there were 8.4 million background checks from Jan. 1 to Sept. 28, compared with 7.7 million in the same period last year," which is a 9 percent increase.

The next big thing on the horizon will be the demonization of gun owners. Obama’s folks and their MSM lackeys will paint gun owners as worse than smokers, SUV owners and molesters.

Firearms scare almost everybody.

Only if you're on the wrong end of one.

When Klinton came into office you could buy an AK 47 for as low as $35 and when he went out they were close to $1000. Want a logical investment? In the 60”s the M1 Garand was less than $50 and now CMP sells them for $500 and gun shows at $1000+. Military surplus weapons have increased about 12% and double in about 10 years. What has BO done to cause a rush on guns and collapse of the stock market? Think about it.

Looking for wisdom - I will be purchasing ammunition for a 12 gauge shotgun and for a Glock 19 this week.

1) Do you have any recommendations for what brand and how much to buy?

2) As a medium of exchange, when the dollar tanks, which would be better to hold as a store of wealth for barter?

“The next big thing on the horizon will be the demonization of gun owners. Obama’s folks and their MSM lackeys will paint gun owners as worse than smokers, SUV owners and molesters.”

The term “Domestic Terrorist” will start trickling into the lexicon along with “racist gun fanatics” in order to describe firearms owners.

There will be the complementary “Branch Dividian” raids with entire families wiped out are reported as a “Domestic Terrorist ring was neutralized today.”.

Next will be the daily protests at firing ranges across the country by the Obama Brown Shirts. And gun clubs HAD BETTER START SCRUITINIZING THEIR “NEW” MEMBERS VERY CLOSLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These “new” members could be plants to cause havoc at the clubs and immediately have Obama lawyers come in to close them down.

Firearms scare almost everybody.

By themselves, no. But when handled by an idiot or an enemy some serious caution may be warranted.

***The next big thing on the horizon will be the demonization of gun owners. Obama’s folks and their MSM lackeys will paint gun owners as worse than smokers, SUV owners and molesters.***

They have been doing that since at least 1961 when Thomas J. Dodd and Emanual Cellar proposed a federal handgun registration scheme.

1961. We don’t want to take your guns away, we only want to register handguns. Long guns will not be affected.

1964. We don’t want to take your guns away. We only want to register all of them!

1968. We don’t want to take your sporting guns away. We ONLY want to register them and ban ONLY the import of foreign Saturday night specials and five shot WWII military bolt action rifles!

1968 “Today we make America safe by taking the guns out of the hands of criminals!”...LBJ when he signed the 1968 gun control act into law.

1971. We don’t want to take your sporting guns away, we ONLY want to ban Saturday night specials.

1976. We don’t want to take your long guns away. We ONLY want to ban all handguns!

(From the original Handgun Control Inc group)....”We only want to control handguns. Long guns will not be affected.”

1981. The NRA is a rifle organization! They should give up their handguns! And they can keep their rifles! (Good Morning America guest Lee Grant the day after Reagan was shot)

1989. We don’t want to ban your hunting rifles and shotguns. We ONLY want to ban handguns AND Assault rifles and shotguns.

We ONLY want to ban assault rifles and shotguns AND all fifty cal. rifles and handguns!

They lied to us in 1961.
They lied to us in 1964.
They lied to us in 1968.
They lied to us in 1971 and 1976.
They lied to us in 1981 and 1989,
And they are lying to us now.

I’d say buy the low recoil 9 pellet buckshot loads for the 12 gauge.Get some sabot slugs too,for special occasions.Any load for the pistol will be ok,the shotgun is the killer.
