No left turn
The Guardian ^ | Tuesday November 11 2008 | Joanna Walters

New studies show academics do not influence their students' politics. But, says Joanna Walters, fears run deep

The urban legend held dear by many conservatives that liberal academics at universities routinely - indeed, systematically - indoctrinate their students with leftwing politics has been dismissed as myth by a sheaf of new studies just published.

Fresh research carried out in the US on America's universities has produced results purporting to show that students' politics are not formed by their tutors. Although American universities are indeed stuffed full of liberal and social democratic faculty, they do not try to turn their students into lefties, say the authors.

The new claims attempt to assuage the suspicions of conservatives - including many parents and politicians - who have long complained of brainwashing and bias on campus, even setting up bodies to monitor and expose alleged offenders.

Michael Barone, a fellow at the rightwing American Enterprise Institute, warns of a "liberal thugocracy" operating across the US varsity and extending into Barack Obama's political machine. He accuses liberals outside higher education of no less than taking their political "marching orders" from America's colleges and universities. "We are looking at an increasingly college-educated electorate and political campaign teams, so of course the liberal agenda comes through."

Three separate sets of new research now conclude that academics have virtually no impact on the ideology of their students.

You mean all these new young college grads dreamed up global warming all by themselves? The acceptance of recycling as urgent and necessary was something that came from...where?

If

liberal academics at universities routinely - indeed, systematically - indoctrinate their students with leftwing politics

Then

No reason to fear conservative talk-shows and implement fairness doctrine.

Can we start fighting for things all liberal!!

Academics are turning out studies showing academics do not indoctrinate their students.

By leftist academics.

Does anyone KNOW any college professors? I know quite a few, and am related to a number. At some schools around here, do not THINK of tenure unless you think Correctly.

Socialists Lie. Communists Lie. It's what they do. They have to, because no one is stupid enough to buy it if it is described truthfully.

A liberal reporter reporting on a liberal study about liberal professors that comes to the conclusion their is no liberal bias. Oh sure.

That would explain teh 100% Democrat vote from the kids, then.

And global warming, and BDS.

I do some work on campuses (campii?) and the number of hard-left kids is way more than average.

Plus a demonstrated lack of tolerance for non-left ideas.

Maybe if we redefine “Left” the article becomes true.

I talk with students all the time who are raving leftist loons and about a third of them say they were Republicans until they got to college. One of my co-workers was a devout Christian and a Reagan Republican until he got to college. Within a couple of semesters he was an atheist and was a devoted follower of Chomsky and Michael Moore. He credits his conversion to a “brilliant” professor who convinced him that socialism would work perfectly if applied properly. He says his sister also made the same switch from conservative Christian to leftist atheist in college.

A lot of the damage is done prior to college. Our schools are turning out brain washed dummies. They know little of our history, laws, hero’s or economics. What they do know is of little use in being gainfully employed and their ability to speak or write is near zero. Just talk to a 18 year old and see. There are exceptions..private schools, home schooled and good parenting, but the rule is ignorance.

I agree with this statement. Even though a substantial number of college professors are liberal, that does not mean that universities and colleges are systematically trying to indoctrinate their students with leftwing politics. Moreover, conservative students are not going to be swayed by the political views of their professors. And, finally, speaking as someone who recently completed a graduate degree, I can say that the liberal professors that I had did not hold my conservative views against me and were more than willing to engage in friendly, respectful debate. All in all, I wouldn't worry about sending my children off to school and having them "brainwashed."

Have things gotten worse recently? Or was I just sheltered in engineering school with only a few general education requirements which were generally apolitical even if the teachers had been liberal. About the only class where politics were brought up was my year of economics, and that was largely because of how much politics affects economics and vice versa. [although I did suspect my econ prof of being a Keynsian and reported him to the Department of the Treasury for possible arrest and reeducation for that during the Reagan Administration :-) ].

I didn't find out my main professor in graduate school was a Republican until I saw him at a 2004 pre-election Hannity/Boortz/Cunningham road show.

I think that they just try to portray it as “educated” and “intelligent” rather than “leftist” and “liberal”. Then they just claim that “liberalism” is simply a natural consequence of higher education.
