The Democratic leaders in Congress, the speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, have declined to call a lame-duck session for next week, as they had hoped, without assurance that Bush would support a stimulus package.

Interesting read, but that gem about halfway down the article was news to me. I imagine they aren't calling a lame duck session because they don't have their "super majority." I think they fully expected to have the 60 seats and that's why they were calling for the session.

I’ve heard that a lot of the money will be used to pay back union dues...does anyone know if this is true?

Using the pre-text of bashing Bush for surveillance activity in the WOT, and "un-doing" the supposed invasion of privacy, Obamaniacs will gather intelligence data on the populace to use in making sure they can find every nickel and every activity of all the non-Osama supporters.

Sounds like the Clinton FBI files/data-mining of the ol' Dems, again.

What I've heard is close to what you say. The unions want the federal bailout money to go to a big buyout fund for union employees so the automakers can get rid of them. I guess the unions will continue to be a pain in the ass until they get a huge buyouy to go away. Those unions know that GM, Ford and Chrysler can't afford to do that, and they knwo that a bankruptcy judge wouldn't do that so they want the federal government to do it.

Nah, never happen but we can still dream.

Obama says that you revive the economy from the bottom up. He therefore should insist that the money go to the people, not the companies.

My sister and I came up with a great plan. THey’re talking about letting people take money from their 401K w/out penalty, make it tax free as well if you buy a car from an American automaker. Give breaks to the individual taxpayer to buy a car instead of handing over corporate welfare. That way you help the taxpayer and the auto company.

I forgot the /s tag.

Your plan would take a person’s retirement money and spend it for current desires. Makes one more dependent on the government for retirement (SSA). It would do nothing to fix the problems of the American car companies. The price premium paid for union contracts. It would only delay the inevitable. This is not a hard problem. The conservative money policies developed over the past several centuries do work. All the fancy math and renaming of the same old liberal policies will not make them any better.

Don't buy Ford/GM/UAW products. They wanted Obama, let Obama buy a couple of million units off the inventory.

If you need a Ford/GM then buy it used. Put off all the purchases of these products.

I've got an F-150 and a Suburban, each with about 70,000 miles. I'm going with a Tundra next and the wife with a Landcruiser.

"Organized labor is not the only interest group with influence in the Democratic Party that is weighing in as Obama plans his transition. Environmentalists are adamant that any aid be conditioned on the auto industry's dropping of its opposition to higher fuel-efficiency standards and investing more in new technology. That puts them at odds with unions, who oppose any strings, leaving it to Obama to mediate."

After the unions spent $400,000,000, to buy the congress and presidency, for the REAL axis of evil Obama/Reid/Pelosi, they want their payback,...no free trade agreement with Columbia, Card Check, unionize the foreign auto makers that manufacture in the US and forced federal subsides from local, state, and federal agencies..
