Poll: Bush disapproval ratings reach new record
CNN ^ | 10.10.08 | From CNN Deputy Political Director Paul Steinhauser

WASHINGTON (CNN) – As President-elect Obama visits the White House, a new national poll suggests that the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is the most unpopular president in the six decades since presidential approval ratings were first measured.

Seventy-six percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday disapprove of how George W. Bush is handling his job as President. That's an all-time high in CNN polling, or in Gallup polling dating back to World War II.

"No other president's disapproval rating has gone higher than 70 percent. Bush has managed to do that three times so far this year," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "That means that Bush is now more unpopular than Richard Nixon was when he resigned from office during Watergate with a 66 percent disapproval rating."

Bush has been the second-best President in our lifetimes.
The only better one was Reagan.

I will appreciate the two excellent supreme court appointments he made, and I wish more of his lower court picks werent stopped by the slow-walking Senate.

But since the media hates him, his PR sucked, and he didnt get the right strategy on Iraq until dec 2006, he’s sucking wind on popularity.

“Trashing W won’t make up for your personal failings, it only serves to display them.”

There are certain types who join in the kicking of a man when he’s down.

Not that I havent joined. I’ve had to acknowledge failures. But lets also acknowledge successes and the fact that Bush has been treated far more harshly than he deserves by the media and even by our own.

The media loves that from Republicans and played it up, making Bush more and more unpopular, to a point that really makes no sense.

Katrina? Nagin and Blanco screwed up and Bush was the fall guy. wtf?!?
Iraq? the other side gets to make wars look ugly. could have done better but Bush persevered and turned it around.
“Bush lied”? A lie.
Economy: 8 million jobs created from 2002 to 2008, growth and expansion. Now its stalled out due to housing bubble bursting.
“he’s not a conservative” Okay, name a conservative President other than Reagan since FDR.

We need to stop peeing on W’s political grave and start looking at the reality that in every single measure, Obama is worse, far worse, than GWB.

“He didn’t believe in our movement, and has left the party a wreckage not seen since Herbert Hoover. “

I disagree.
We are about in the same shape we were in 1976 and 1992.
We are back on our heels but we can bounce back with the right strategy, attitude and ideas.
get our ideas, our grassroots, and develop a winning message and credible candidates ...
and make Obama’s agenda as popular as bad breath..

And let me point out:
A KEY PART OF BOUNCING BACK WILL BE TO REHABILITATE PRESIDENT BUSH’S LEGACY SUFFICIENT TO MAKE CLEAR THAT FUTURE PROBLEMS THAT OBAMA CREATES CANT BE PEGGED ON BUSH. WE CANNOT LET THEM USE BUSH LIKE THE USED HOOVER.

“Cheney should have seen oil moving up rapidly long before it hit $145. Bush should have signed an executive order to allow drilling on U.S.”

The bans were Congressional bans. Bush did what he could. Bush also called on Congress to repeal the ANWR ban but they never did.

If you want to blame someone for that, blame the Dems and the RINOs (and the people who vote for them).

The reactionaries have gotten their wish. Obama will be the President and he most assuredly is everything that President Bush is not. The clever efforts to link the two are amusing but will not suffice. Whatever criticisms conservative reactionaries might have legitimately had with President Bush, they will now see an avalance of the problem under the Democratic Congress and now Democratic President they chose to elect by attacking President Bush.

This has been the dilemma... for years we have the whining of people "sick and tired of the lesser of two evils argument". they of course have every right to feel that way if they disagree with a Bush policy in one area or another. So they got off the bus and stayed home.

Great - NOW WE FACE THE GREATEST OF ALL POSSIBLE EVILS. ... NOW WHAT?!?

I do hope that those on the right who invested much energy and venom attacking Bush will be equally if not more forceful in opposing Obama's socialism.

i agree. he and cheney seem to feel that responding to criticism is beneath them. there was noone other than tony snow (rip) who showed any ability to deal with press.

Yes. His PR was terrible and now that Scottie McClellan - his worst press secretary - betrayed him, we know why. Like his Dad, GWB seemed to live in the old-fashioned world where campaigning only happened in election season. Bush was over-loyal to sub-par subordinates like mcclellan.

Tony Snow otoh was a good press secretary and it is a great loss to have him leave this world.

"i’m so angry with bush. he showed no leadership at all and left us with obama."

Please dont be angry. Disappointed may be a better emotion.

Liberals are not our freinds across the isle. They are the enemy!

The same should go for liberals on THIS side of the aisle.

You are most welcome. It makes me very sad that many on this forum cannot see this simple truth and the Bush hatred is blinding their hearts, their minds, and their souls.

Free Republic has allowed a lot of Bush hatred venom to be written endlessly on its pages for the last 4 years.

The congress that just had a MAJOR victory? Republicans taking comfort in congress approval ratings last 2 years were deluding themselves BIG TIME. Democrats had a careful controlled 4 year strategy and the key component was GWB.

Come next year the deck is shuffled finally and we must become strategic also, and cynical, and principled.

i wish i could just be disappointed, however, my community is overrun with illegals who cost us a fortune. bush’s compassionate conservatism
costs us a great deal of money. bush doesn’t have to worry
about paying for college, for christmas, for vacations.
he uses the money of middle class people who have played by the
rules to extend his largesse to his mexican buddies. i expect
that of dems, i didn’t need eight years of it from a republican.

Sad but true. Maybe FR should stop all GWB posts. He is still dividing our party, we want to vent, they want to lament. You guys see the movie Downfall? Everyone betrayed YOU KNOW WHO!

Do these Bush faithful realize almost every Conservative opinion outlet, NEWSMAX, national Review, has writers trashing their hero? I mean TWO elections, 2006+2008! Do they want three?

I agree with you. I see BHO taking all the credit for any good that comes of Bush’s actions. You know what the media will do. Makes me sick sometimes.

Did not see the movie. So I'm afraid I don't understand your analogy. Analogies aside, Bush to the bitter end was and is a dupe.

I’m expecting a cottage industry of “Post-Presidential Polling” to begin on January 21 so the MSM can continue to tell us how unpopular GWB is.
