Strong Outreach Contributed to Obama’s Surge Among Jews

The Jewish support for Barack Obama’s historic election showed that despite lengthy and expensive efforts by Republicans, Jews remained a solid Democratic constituency, willing to vote in record numbers for a candidate who had to earn their backing.

Initial exit polls indicated that around 78% of Jews voted for Obama for president, higher than the proportion of the Jewish vote won in 2004 by the Democratic nominee, Senator John Kerry, and close to the share captured by Senator Al Gore in 2000. No other demographic group — except African Americans — gave the first black president such overwhelming support.

“The ever-promised movement of Jews away from the Democratic party didn’t materialize,” Democratic pollster Mark Mellman concluded.

This level of acclamation was not a given. Obama’s support in the Jewish community last spring and summer hovered at around 60%, in the face of Democratic rival Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s popularity in the community and serious questions about Obama’s foreign policy views and personal associations.

Observers say the shift in Jewish attitudes could be credited to a number of factors, including concern about the economy and deep discomfort with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee. But it also was measurably helped by a concerted effort by grass-roots organizations, national Democratic groups and the Obama campaign’s effort to court a small constituency that has long played an outsized role in American politics.

Obama doles out pork to Father Pfleger by Walt Gilbert

Obama's most recent pastor difficulties won't be easy to shake. There's a longstanding relationship between Obama and Pfleger (who could best be described as the Vanilla Ice of black liberation theology) which features at least one sizeable transfer of taxpayer funds to the benefit of Pfleger's programs at his church, St. Sabina.

One of those long-time supporters was Rev. Michael Pfleger, the politically active leader of St. Sabina Church. He gave Obama's campaign $1,500 between 1995 and 2001, including $200 in April 2001, about three months after Obama announced $225,000 in grants to St. Sabina programs.

What one has to wonder is just how Pfleger manages to maintain tax exempt status in spite of the fact that he makes absolutely no bones about being politically active, and has in fact expressed a high degree of pride in the fact. Add to that the fact that his church has benefited from taxpayer funds, secured by Barack Obama as a state senator, after he personally donated money to Obama's political campaigns.

This could be a case where Pfleger is within the letter of the law while being far outside the spirit. But, if nothing else, the relationship between him and the likely Democratic presidential nominee warrants close examination by the press, if not federal authorities. http://www.thenextright.com/walt-gilbert/obama-doles-pork-to-pfleger

The point being that Jewish voters simply did what they always did ~ vote uncritically for whoever was running as a Democrat for President.

They'd no doubt vote for David Duke if he had the nomination.

This article made me sick to my stomach. For the life of me, I can't figure out Jews. Although tremendously successful in most walks of life, their political instincts seem suicidal. Jews of all people should be conservative. The conservative base of America is the strongest supporter of Israel. Obama and the left will throw Israel under the bus in a NY minute. And yet election after election these guys vote liberal/left. Unbelievable. Can any Jewish Freepers explain this madness?

I got in an interesting discussion with some Jewish FReepers, I think they were just as perplexed. We talked that when Sarah was dissed, that group didn't represent most Jews, looks like they were wrong. Very wrong. Way wrong.

assumed to be accurate, I have no way of verifying.

Did not like Coolidge (one of our best Presidents); loved FDR, 82-90% all the time.

American Jews do not seem to know who their friends are.

Maybe they are not as "American" as we thought.

....and deep discomfort with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Bulldinkies. Expect to see more and more of this thrown into talking points and articles as they try to whittle away at Sarah's public persona in the coming months. It's all crap.

And - for the life of me - I have no idea how a Jewish American could pull the lever for the guy who named his oldest daughter after the Caliph Othman's oldest daughter. For those who dont know - he commissioned the writing of the first koran.

I guess the 78% will not be too upset when the Israelis are driven into the Mediterranean Sea.

Let me try to explain.First generation of Jewish immigrants was hard working, simple people who started with nothing. They also experienced hatred against them(not Jews only but Irish and Italian immigrants).Second generation had way better edjucation and more money to feel more equal.Third generation, as general, was fed with the golden spoon and Utopian ideas of socialism. There is a difference between Democrats of 40’s and 50’ and now days, but for some reason many American Jews fail to understand this.It is some kind of religion for them.
