If you had a business, small or large, or even a mom-and-pop type store, which you are planning to expand, or even if you have an idea for starting a new business, what are you going to do with those plans?

Given that this is currently a rough environment, it may not be a good idea to either expand or start a new business, no matter who ends up being president.

My belief is that, with Obama, the business nvironment will be even more gloomy than it is currently.

So, if Obama ends up being president, and with the xpectation that he's not going to be good at all business because of high taxes or other demands upon your business, such as higher wages and higher premiums for medical coverage for your employees, would you still go ahead with your plans?

Me, personally, I'm working on an idea which hopefully I can turn into an online business, but, with Obama in the presidency, I might decide to start that business outside of the U.S.

What do you think? Am I being too apprehensive, or even unpatriotic?

I imagine this is a question that may also be on other people's minds, just like it was in the mind of Joe "the plumber".

Like any business actions at any time, future actions are weighed against a risk/benefit analysis. In that, one would calculate a ROI- Return on Investment. Increasing taxes are an expense (no matter what Obama’s so called experts say.), increased risk of regulation is a liability one must also take into account.

If, for example, I needed a ActionScript coder, I may be tempted if taxes are increased, to go through a freelancing source and outsource the job to India (for example) to make up for the cost difference.

I have had to retool my hiring plans based on current situation. I cannot predict what an Obama presidency would mean though.

I own a manufacturing business in Illinois. I will be doing whatever is legal in my power to curtail payroll. I personally own the building so I will charge more rent to the corporation and take less in payroll money. Rent is not
subject to SS and Medicare taxes. Raises for employees will
be limited, no new hiring and I am not pushing for any new business. There is no reward to be had for being more successful so why take the risks? Why earn all of that extra money if Obama is going to use it to waste on big spending and “spreading the wealth”. You need to do what is good for you personally. Taxes and expenses and insurance are brutal in business. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply.

In the case of what I have in mind, the idea could be implemented anywhere, and it would be available to all people everywhere, including the U.S. My preference would be to implement it in the U.S., but with Obama in there, I would be very tempted to set up headquarter outside the U.S. as long as the country is business-friendly and with a low cost of doing business, including low taxes.

Go ahead with your plans, only be a one man operation. Take your taxable income to just under $250000.00.

You will get a tax credit, (welfare check) to boot.

What more would you want? lol extreme sarcasm.

That is just exactly what I would do now, and did when Clinton raised the taxes and made the retro to the beginning of the year when he went into office.

I sold real estate, and figured if I sold 10 or so less homes, I would lower my taxable income. I paid less in, yet increased my bottom line income. Get it down to a lower tax bracket.

If you work by the hour, do the math. Will a raise put you in the next tax bracket, then you will have to pay more and net less than you would without the raise. Refuse the raise.

Just my opinion for me.

We own a small business that we downsized a while back...the reason was the ridiculous workers comp rates in this state among other things. We have considered taking back on more trucks and employees. However, the gov't at every turn makes it difficult. With Obama--no way. We subcontract with another small business that plans on firing all employees if Obama is able to implement his tax increases and his insurance requirements.

There is nothing "unpatriotic" about common sense. A socialist society awaits us if Obama gets his plans implemented.

It’s funny how tax credits are welfare checks now? We’ve always had tax credits. There’s a child tax credit still, isn’t there, and remember the renter’s credit? And McCain’s going to give us a credit for our health insurance.

Thanks for your reply and advise.

However, if what I have in mind becomes successful, it could turn out to be a many people operation. In fact, if it did become as successful as I envision, it would become, within a few months or a couple of years, a company of a few thousand employees, or perhaps even more.

And, since it's in the field of news and opinion, I would also be very leery about new regulations coming from an Obama and democrat congress regarding free-speech and the "fairness doctrine".

As a small business owner I plan on hiring a tax attorney. With all the taxes and regulations Obama proposes but doesn’t explain, I’m gonna need one.
$250,000 gross or net (Remember Charlie Rangel’s ‘surcharge’?)
‘Play or pay’ insurance proposals (Mandatory? Is my current one enough?)
Union Card Check (I don’t like Teamsters)
CArbon tax or cap and trade (how much?)
Re regulation of transportation industry (Bidding on authorities?)
Raising 2290’s? Higher F.E.T.’s ?
That’s just the tip of the iceberg, I think.

As far as any talk of expansion, I’m in the middle of a 5 year plan and I’m not expanding any time soon. As for employees we’re talking about increasing productivity without hiring. Keep your powder dry. It’s tough here in Ohio.

We’ve been thinking of buying a small resort in a heavy tourist traffic are (seasonal) to be family owned. Given the Great 0nes tax plans, however, we may not be able to keep it under the 250,000 range. We have thought about upgrades to the resort to up the expenses and still keep it under 250. We are worried about how the economy affects the hospitality business. It is kinda sad since our family can do alot of the remodeling and upgrading with the skills we have. We also have excellent management skills and have been running our own business for years, as well as experience within management of large corporations.

However, the economy does scare us at this point and I see no immediate relief in the near future.

I am a plumber who will not accept Democrat business at the moment. If Obama wins I will quote the Democrats I am willing to work for higher than the Republicans. This will not be done out of spite but simple business logic. They voted for a candidate knowing he was going to raise taxes etc. I am only carrying out their wishes to redistribute the wealth. I will be happy to help them achieve their goals. If they don’t like it there are many others out there who they can get.
