Rochester, NY—State Police have arrested a University of Rochester instructor for possessing child pornography and have alleged that the suspect was tipped off by a University official.
According to WROC-TV, “Gilbert Kirton, 26, of Rochester was charged Friday with one count of possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child.”
Police also said Kirton's arrest comes despite being told about the investigation by a Dean at the U of R. Investigators have been looking into Kirton for four months, based on a tip from the Montgomery County, Pennsylvania police department.
The Dean has not been publicly identified. However, another local TV station, WHAM, has reported that the official was “a director of graduate studies at the university” and police referred to the tipster as a male:
Captain Scott Crosier says, "obviously he conveyed enough information to him that caused Mr. Kirton to dismantle his computer and attempt to get rid of it by placing it in six different garbage bags and in six different trash receptacles on the campus. So obviously Mr. Kirton felt that there was enough information was conveyed to him that he realized that the computer was the source of the problem."
At this point, it is unknown whether the University official who tipped off Kirton will be charged, WROC reported. According to WHEC-TV, the official learned of the investigation, and tipped Kirton off, after police contacted him to verify Kirton’s employment information.
Kirton was arraigned in Monroe County Court and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $15,000 bond. If convicted in federal court, he faces ten to fifteen years in prison.
I’m sorry to say that probably the great majority of deans in today’s universities would do the same thing. Our universities are in very sorry shape.

If that's the information, then I don't see how this dean is guilty of anything. He gets a call from the police about someone he knows, then he goes and asks the person what's up with the police contact. My first reaction would be to confront the person as well. I'd want to know why the authorities were interested in someone I work with. I'm sure once the perv found out cops were looking into him he was able to guess what they might be after.
Except, as the police pointed out, the Dean gave Kirton enough information that Kirton knew it had something to do with computer crime, hence Kirton trying to destroy the evidence.

For being a Dean he sure is a dumb@$$! Thowing it away rather than destroying it? Even if it was destroyed there is still an online record of anything he already did, no too smart.

It appears at this point that he sure did screw up. That’s a shame because he seems like a fascinating person to me. Someone I’l enjoy hearing lecture or something...if he wasn’t too much of a flaming liberal.
