Good article on why credit unions make sense. Oh, and for you business owners, some of the larger credit unions offer business banking for members.

I went to Credit Union in 2005 and wouldn’t switch.

USAA is looking more attractive than ever. (Technically, its a thrift, not a credit union, but they’re very similar.)

End of this month I'm pulling some cash out of bank savings and buying CD’s at my CU. We even re mortgaged through them earlier this year at 5.125% 15 Yr.

I’ve been in one since the early 90’s and would never step foot in a bank again.

Been with a Military Credit Union AND USAA since 1980. Dealt with a bank for a Girl Scout account and HATED it. Glad my daughter grew up....

I have been with a local credit union for 15+ years. It caters to college students and small consumers. I use Charles Schwab for IRA’s and other investments, where I don't need access to cash and can wait for the SPIC insurance settlement if something goes really bad.

Another nice thing about credit unions...if you find what is called a "shared service center", you can make deposits to and withdrawals from your account at a credit union in another city (subject to policies, of course). Saves the junk fee of using an ATM, which can add up. My CU and its branch officers helped me solve a problem with business deposits (which piled up in held mail while I was traveling). They don't pile up any more, and I can put my money to work quicker. Good job, RKBA!

I actually belong to two separate credit unions. I would never go back to a bank. My last mortgage was bought by WAMU and because of that, I made sure to get this one with a CU.

Right on.

Joined the local Steelworkers Credit Union in 1956. Got a payday loan of #25 to tide me over. Was broke on arriving in my adopted city. Today called the "Community Credit Union". I have bought cars and renovated an old house- gone to the old country on the Credit Union.

As well as using a credit union, I tried the old fashioned way of storing a nest egg in the banking system. This as a hedge against future needs. Ok at first, then they tried to wipe out that kind of old fashioned saver. The clerk waiting while a machine clicked up "service charges". Hardly ever paid even 6%.

I guess the old fashioned saver went out of style. The banks had to pay THEM interest. It seems they wanted the client to borrow money, not save it. So far their little gambit seems to have worked......
