I spoke on the phone Sunday with Sarah Palin, who was in Long Beach, Calif., preparing to take off on her next campaign trip.
I pointed out that Obama surely had a closer connection to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright than to Ayers - and so, I asked, if Ayers is a legitimate issue, what about Reverend Wright?
She didn't hesitate: "To tell you the truth, Bill, I don't know why that association isn't discussed more, because those were appalling things that that pastor had said about our great country, and to have sat in the pews for 20 years and listened to that - with, I don't know, a sense of condoning it,
I asked at the end of our conversation whether Palin, fresh off her own debate, had any advice for McCain. "I'm going to tell him the same thing he told me. I talked to him just a few minutes before I walked out there on stage. And he just said: 'Have fun. Be yourself, and have fun.' And Senator McCain can do the same." She paused, and I was about to thank her for the interview, but she had one more thing to say. "Only maybe I'd add just a couple more words, and that would be: 'Take the gloves off.' "

I love our future VP!! This woman has more guts (or balls) than most Republican politicians.
Taking on Wright is a dead horse...and leaves Palin open to be critiqued (even more)(and even though unfairly) for her connections to Pentecostalism...which most non-Pentecostals find as strange.
Barrack will wreck the US economy with crippling taxes and regulations...along with massive new programs—all at a time when we are reeling, and can’t afford it. He really is a socialist-borderline-Marxist, and most seem really ignorant of that fact. This should be the strategy—IT’S THE ECONOMY STUPID!
Get him!!!
Agreed. Voters care a lot more about their wallets.
Yes, but most don't understand economics (at least those that aren't already conservatives.)
“IT’S THE ECONOMY STUPID!”
It sure is.
I agree that linking Obama to Ayers adn Wright is not enough.
Karl Rove’s advice is to take on Obama on BOTH fronts — personal credibility and judgment, as well as McCain offering positive message on economy.
I think Larry Kudlow also recommended that Republicans point out the disaster that awaits with all three branches of government in Democrat hands, and exactly that Obama’s policy will totally wreck the already fragile economy.
Don’t think that McCain is going to show up Tuesday with only Ayers in his bag of tricks. He’s basically spent most of his weekend at his Arizona ranch getting ready for the big showdown. Definitely expect him to come packing on the economy.
To tell you the truth, Bill, I dont know why that association isnt discussed more, because those were appalling things that that pastor had said about our great country, and to have sat in the pews for 20 years and listened to that with, I dont know, a sense of condoning it, I guess, because he didnt get up and leave to me, that does say something about character. But, you know, I guess that would be a John McCain call on whether he wants to bring that up.
ITS THE AMERICA-HATING, STUPID.
Obama’s got himself a problem there.
Excellent!
FINALLY Gov Palin is making the rounds of friendly media outlets, I’ll admit to not being a Bill Krystol Fan, but if he can bring some positive media exposure..I’m a Bill Krystal fan.
I’d still love to see an open letter to Firearms Owners penned by Governor Palin and dealing with Obamao’s attempts to censor the NRA ads in PA.
She will be attacked anyway, and such efforts are designed to shift some focus off of the economy.
But McCain will have to really step up and reassure people that his Economic Plan will work and benefit Mainstreet.
And a poll of military members came out favoring McCain over Obama as CINC 68% to 23%, that should also be played up.
Ultimately, more Americans will feel comfortable with Pentecostalism than with the crazy church of Wright’s with his incessant stream of American bashing. I think that would be a debate the McCain campaign would welcome.
Yes, Palin needs to hit Obama about his crazy lefty friends and his plans to raise taxes while McCain puts forward his agenda. I think Palin is uniquely able to handle her tasks. She can do so in her homespun, common sense-style, which is deadly effective. It doesn’t sound like the formal pronouncements of a candidate. It sounds more like a conversation you would have with her if you ran into her at the local supermarket, church, hardware store, etc...It sounds like a conversation with a friend or acquaintance. Candidates pay top dollar to people to teach them how to speak like that. For Palin, it comes naturally.
At the end of the day, McCain has to sell himself and his vision for America. He’s going to have to buck up and say ‘this is where we should be headed and this is how we are going to get there’. He also needs to make clear why Obama’s way is wrong. McCain is going to have to be the one to tweak Obama and the Dems about their role in the Fannie and Freddie mess. And can the bipartisanship already. Americans need to know why Obama cannot be trusted on policy. That’s the #1’s job. Palin’s job is to throw some bombs and make some cuts. McCain has to win over the voters with his plan for the country.
Kristol writes: “I guess so. And I guess well soon know McCains call on whether he wants to bring Wright up perhaps at his debate with Obama Tuesday night.”
Interesting, I think this touches on another discussion
on the Board. Rove was asking, why is McCain telegraphing his strategy- telling Obama that he was going to make an issue of Obama’s qualifications. The answer might be just what Kristol is doing in this article-giving Obama a lot of things to be concerned about going into the debate.
McCain has GOT TO TAKE THE GLOVES OFF! I’m being asked repeatedly by the McCain campaign to go to Ohio and volunteer. Leaving my home and traveling 450 miles to live out of hotel to work on the campaign is something I’m willing to do IF AND ONLY IF McCain starts fighting back. He’s got til Tuesday’s debate, otherwise, I’m hanging in the South.
“Take the gloves off” - I’ve got such a crush on Sarah. She needs to take over the whole campaign strategy. First “send me to Michigan” now fight, fight, fight. It’s so refreshing having a republican who has the attitude of not taking any of the Dem’s s#!t.

I remember when I was 17 years old shooting hoops and talking to my brother at the end of the Carter years. We were talking about how sad it was that the US was now #2 and The Soviet Union was # 1.
These 3 people are reminding me of those feelings. Deja Vu! It has only taken them 2 years in congress to undermine the worlds confidence in the US.
After Reagan came on and restored our great country I have never voted for a Democrat and never will.
It is his achilles heel, no matter HOW many times they scream "raaaaacist!" or call for the Whambulance. Hit them hard. Raise purple welts on them. Make they cry.
MAKE....THEM...... LOSE.
Call the RNC in DC and tell them that!!
It is the economy. What I’d love to hear our Sarah say is something like this:
“I improved the economy of my home state, Alaska, by cutting taxes and bringing in competition in the field of energy production. What worked in Alaska, can work in any other state. What worked in the field of energy production, could also work in any other field...like education.”
I agree with Mark Steyn about Sarah’s statements on education during her debate. I would certainly like to hear her come out in favor of vouchers, or some other innovation that brings competition into education.
