Have the Democrats Been Hoisted on their Own Petard?
Me | Sep. 30, 2008 | RetSignman

For years now, the democrats, their media, their candidates and liberal talking heads have been tearing and ripping apart President Bush.

The result has been to drive down his approval rating to just above the Congress and the liberals are calling him 'The Worse President in History'.

Nancy Pelosi even went so far as blaming the Bush Administration as the cause of the current crisis while the debate was still in progress.

If anyone is surprised the bailout failed, they shouldn't be...it is obvious, President Bush approved it.

The successful scourging of him by the democrats drove away the support of, not only his own party members but the public in general. No one trusted him or any members of his party who supported the bailout.

I have heard, so far, only one person who sees what the problem was and it was one of the most liberal members of Congress and he warned his members to lay off Bush...Barney Frank. He is a lot of things but being stupid is not one of them.

When the bill is laid on the table for debate again, I expect the liberals will suddenly switch their views of blaming Bush to supporting him.

the other possibility is that Nancy swings back to the left, puts back in stuff we took out to get votes to pass, and we’ll be in worse shape than what we had yesterday.

Another thread points to the comments by Pelosi as scuttling the plan. I think the Dems need to tread on thin ice here. Since Pelosi has taken control, nothing of any consequence has been done on any front by Congress, hence its lowest approval rating in history...all on her watch. People within her own party chair all the regulatory and advisory committees and none of them did a thing to ward off this problem. Pelosi will go down in history as the most visible, camera-hugging, publicity-seeking, Speaker that did absolutely nothing to warrant the attention.

I hope she does move to the left on this bill. It would give McCain and the GOP House a unified opportunity to oppose it, seize the political platform, and win on this issue.

Assuming McCain would wake up.

Pelosi Galore is incompetent, and a Member in Good Standing of the Trained Women’s Assault Team.

Sorry, but this happens to be one of my peeves.

The expression is “hoist with” (or “by”) his own petard, not “hoisted on.” A petard is a small bomb used to blow up walls and fortifications. The expression (used by Shakespeare in Hamlet) essentially means to be harmed by your own plan to harm someone else.

A person may be hoist by his own petard, but not hoisted on his own petard.

Again, my apologies. Now back to the thread.

Yeah, it’s a nit — but I think most people want others to tell them when they make a mistake like this, as long as it’s done politely. I would have done it by private message if it weren’t the case that this phrase is so commonly misused.
