Last Tuesday without any fanfare, the Barack Obama campaign announced Jennifer Joyce and Bob McCulloch, the top prosecutors in St. Louis city and St. Louis County, were joining something called an Obama truth squad.
They plan to respond immediately to any misleading advertisements and statements that might violate Missouri ethics laws.
"We want to keep this campaign focused on issues," Joyce told me. "Missourians don't want to be distracted by these divisive character attacks."
The truth squad's plan is to indentify false attacks and respond immediately with truthful information, Joyce and McCulloch say.
Truthful information like: Obama is a Christian who plans to cut taxes for anyone making under $250,000 a year.
The Obama campaign says prosecutors from the Kansas City area and some rural areas are also joining the truth squad, and Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer was also expected to be part of the team.
"Whether it is directly attributable to the campaign or one of the soft money operations," McCulloch told me, "if they're not going to tell the truth, then somebody's got to step up and say 'wait a minute, that's not true, this is the truth.'"
For reasons that are still not fully clear, prosecutors promising to tell the public the truth have sparked outrage among supporters of John McCain.
Three days later, I got a call from KMOX radio talk show host Mark Reardon. (I'll paraphrase.)
That story you did last night is really getting a lot of attention, Reardon said.
I was off yesterday. What story? I asked.
The one about the Obama truth squad, he said.
Oh, that story I did Tuesday at 6, I responded.
Well, Rush Limbaugh just talked about it, and the blogoshpere has it, and it's getting big. It's really going to get big, Reardon said.
Reardon was correct.

When I returned to the office on Saturday, I spoke with callers from New York to Florida who had heard about Obama's truth squad and were outraged about it.
One caller said he was angry, because people were going to be "prosecuted" and "indicted" for stating their political views.
Another caller said Obama was planning to send police to the homes of elderly women because of their political statements.
A third caller said he wanted information about Obama's "storm troopers."
Members of law enforcement never said anyone would be prosecuted, indicted or punished for saying anything, only that they were prepared to tell the public the truth.
By Saturday afternoon, outgoing Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt, a McCain supporter, was also outraged and accused Obama of "police state tactics" that would "intimidate people and kill free debate."
In a written statement on the governor's official Web site, Blunt said the basis for his statement was prompted by "news reports."
"The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill open debate," Blunt said in the statement.
Prosecutor Jennifer Joyce said: "We're here to respond to any character attacks, to set the record straight."
"Barack Obama needs to grow up," Blunt continued. "Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations, because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them."
Isn't that what Joyce and McCulloch say they plan to do?
If we follow Blunt's argument, what does that say about his opinion of the John McCain Truth Squad and those responsible for it?

Contrary to what Mills now is claiming, his original KMOV report states that the Obama campaign is asking Missouri "law enforcement" to "target" people. The report specifies and interviews Jennifer Joyce and Bob McCulloch, in their roles as "two high-profile prosecutors." The report quotes Joyce and McCulloch as saying that they "plan to respond immediately" in their role as prosectuors.
So who is lying, John Mills, you or McCulloch or Joyce--or all three of you?

In fact the report identified the Missouri statutes that could lead the viewer to believe that calling Obama a Muslim was against the law, and that the prosecutors, and law enforcement officials would come after you!

He mixes fact with conjecture, and verifiable truth for speculation.
For example. Is Obama a Christian? Well, Obama says he is, and he attended a church that claims to be Christian. He denies being a muslim. Those are all “facts”. But how would we know if he truly is a Christian? His works don’t show it, and some of what he proposes seems quite unchristian, like abortion. And his church seems to like Muslims, which would suggest their faith is misguided.
But in the end, this is one type of “truth”, one where the reality is unknowable, and you have to take someone’s word for it.
The 2nd example is Obama “plans” to cut taxes. This can’t possibly be considered a “truth”, as it is about something that will happen in the future. It’s pure speculation what Obama really will do, and so saying that Obama will raise taxes isn’t a lie, it’s simply opinion. Does Obama “plan” to cut taxes? We only know that he SAYS he will. When we look at his proposals, they don’t add up. He can’t possibly cut the taxes he says he will cut AND raise the spending he says he will raise.
So what’s the point of “planning” if the plans are unrealizable? We have to evaluate which plan is more likely, and it’s clear from Obama’s past that he will spend the money, not cut the taxes. So while Obama’s team certainly can argue that they are SAYING they will cut taxes, they can’t argue that people who express a contrary opinion are lying.
If someone said Obama voted against a bill that Obama voted FOR, that would be a falsity that could be refuted by evidence. But so far, the only campaign which is actually LYING about what people did in the past is Obama’s campaign.
For example, Obama lied about McCain’s Social Security plan from 2005, saying that if McCain had “had his way”, current retired people would have lost money. In fact, no person over the age of 50 would have been ALLOWED to be in the program. So that is a clearly false statement.
Another example: Obama lied about McCain’s votes on Stem Cells, saying he opposed Embryonic research, when in fact McCain has always, unfortunately, supported the research, and voted for it. Bush vetoed it, but McCain was for it. That’s not a “what will McCain do in the future”, it’s “what did he do in the past”, and Obama is lying about McCain’s past.
Another example is Obama’s attack on McCain for e-mail. In that case, Obama used a truth (McCain doesn’t actually type his own e-mail) to say falsely that McCain is unaware of technology. Again, not an opinion about what McCain would do as President, but a fact-question about what McCain knows now. And Obama lied.
McCain’s attacks on Obama are about the future, which is a matter of opinion, not verifiable evidence. Obama calls “lies” what people are EXPECTING Obama will actually do as President.

KMOV is making it very difficult to make comments or even see the comments or even to access the story. Sometimes the comments are there, sometimes they’re not.

Because that's what a PR firm is for. Not top prosecutors and law enforcement whose job it is to intimidate and who have the power of the state at their disposal. And it's been intimidation, rather than telling the truth, that's the history of the Obama campaign.
Among their tactics have been:
- Hacking into Sarah Palin's private email.
- Threatening Jewish groups unless they disinvite her from their rally at the UN.
- Threatening a criminal investigation against the sponsor of a TV ad that connects Obama to Bill Ayres.
- Trying to shut down WGN for interviewing Stanley Kurtz.

An example of his lying about his faith was his recitation of the shahadah.
The shahadah, according to Sunni belief must be recited by every Muslim as an attestation of their allegiance to Islam.
And little barry hussein obama can recite it with precision, and has called it the most beautiful sound he has ever heard.
Muslims are allowed to lie, it’s called Al-taqiyya or dissimulation and they shall fear no retribution as long as it is beneficial to the cause of Islam or to save their own skin.
