For most of the debate Friday night, Sen. Barack Obama was the one who presented himself as presidential and strong. And Sen. John McCain appeared to be the guy who was wavering.
Then came Iran.
That's when Obama's mouth dried up, and he appeared to be standing alone at that terrible border between presenting yourself as presidential and dealing with that knock on the door in the middle of the night, with the aide outside saying, "Mr. President, the planes are in the air."
I'm not saying Obama failed, or that McCain won. If you're an Obama supporter, your guy won. If you're a McCain supporter, your guy won. We're stubborn Americans now.
It'll all be decided anyway on the Sunday morning talk shows, as the Beltway punditry tap-dances its way into a consensus, that point at which they drink from the cup of common wisdom and some line is pulled out from Friday's debate, a line to be prattled on by some politically active late-night TV host, just before the host introduces Dr. McSteamy to talk about his stupid show about the hospital and the love affairs and the hot nurses.
But as I write this, the debate has just ended, and I have turned off the spinners on television, and I'll most likely be embarrassed by my words, for not waiting for that cup of common wisdom to pass my desk and offer safety.
Still, I thought that Obama looked so good, and so presidential, up until that terrible moment for him, the Iranian moment, when he could have used a pitcher of water to wash his tongue down from the roof of his mouth.
Up until then, Obama had that baritone voice working, so clear and forceful.

Obama flunks geo politics, but it matters not to the sheeple led by the nose from the MSM.
But S. Palin OTH, well now they will be right on top of it.
Such a terrifying image.
If I continue feeling the way I feel about Obama's chances, I may have to absent myself from FR. I don't want to bring everyone down.
But unless McCain can make EVERYONE feel the way I feel when I read that sentence, I think we're toast--the economic situation will make people vote for "change" without their worrying much about things they don't WANT to worry about (taxes, terrorism).
It happened on both sides of the Atlantic in 1932 and could happen again. We forget that Adolf Hitler was ELECTED chancellor of Germany, he did not take over in a coup.
The comments on the article are scary.
My feelings exactly
I’m worried that people will ‘vote for change’ without thinking out where an Obama POTUS would lead to.
So he is going to tax the small business owner (250K and up), and they will just pass the increase along to us the consumer.
If McCAin can turn this around and win, we dodge a major bullet.
If race the issue (and its not for me), I wish the Dems had run someone like Condi Rice. Oh thats right, only the sort like Obama is would play the race card like he has.

I don’t see how the MSM thinks Obama won the debate. By the time he stumbled in to an answer I forgot the question. No way did he look presidential.
What the writer is really saying is that his illusions about bambi being a leader were shattered. Up until that moment, the mask was in place. Bambi was struggling but he could have muddled through like always. But then, the mask slipped, a little at first and then completely off. And that was it.
The MSM are Obama’s cheerleaders. Even if Obama fell flat on his face, the MSM will pick him up, dust him off, and say that he won.
If Obama wins and tanks in the Presidency, as I suspect he would if elected, the MSM will circle the wagons and act as if they had no part in getting him elected.
“But unless McCain can make EVERYONE feel the way I feel when I read that sentence, I think we’re toast—the economic situation will make people vote for “change” without their worrying much about things they don’t WANT to worry about (taxes, terrorism).”
If you think “we’re toast” you have to argue with the 400k plus who said McCain won 68/30 with just 2 points of undecideds and the 78% of previously undecided See B.S. found that said McCain was “better prepared to be president.”
John Kass is one great reporter, he has been all over BO and the Chicago Way Pols for a long time. Read his other writings in the Tribune. It’s a wonder he is still alive.
That is one of the key points that could and should hit home with the voter if McCain or Palin can define it in terms idiots could understand. BUSINESSES DO NOT PAY TAXES.
The cost of their taxes is built into the goods and services they sell. The customers (you and me) pay the businesses' tax increases for them. Obama raises taxes on businesses, they pass the tax increase on to the customer. It's Business 101.
I seem to recall an exchange reported between Bill Clinton and... maybe the Little Caesar's pizza guy (I think?) when Bill was pushing the minimum wage increase. Clinton said something along the lines of... Heck, it won't hurt you, you can just raise the price of your pizza...
BUT THEY SHOULD NOT TAKE IT FOR GRANTED, MCCAIN HAS TO EXPLAIN OBAMA'S TAX SCAM IN TERMS A CHILD COULD UNDERSTAND.
You don't need to push the point about jobs moving overseas. That point is too confusing for most voters. Tell them how it affects them PERSONALLY. The price of baby food goes up when we raise taxes on Harris Teeter (or Kroger, or Safeway, or Giant Food...). The price of lamps, coffee tables and sofas goes up when we raise taxes on Sears or Rooms To Go, the price of big-screen TVs goes up when we raise taxes on Best Buy and Circuit City, the price of Happy Meals goes up when we raise taxes on McDonald's.
BUSINESSES DO NOT PAY TAXES. Obama and the rest of his liberal, bottom-feeding scum know it and that is why these people are evil, pure and simple.
Everyone talks about image “polished” “sounded...” etc.
On substance, McCain smoked Obama, except in the beginning where mcCain was a bit too deferential.
McCain has been so right on these issues, and Obama so wrong, vacuous, empty and hollow, there is no comparison.
All Obama has is his backwards-looking “I wasnt for the war in 2002 so that makes me smarter” view. BS.
The trouble is that American voters aren’t stupid, and though Obama sticks his nose in the air and ‘looks so Presidential’ babbling his empty phrases, they’ve worn thin and he has nothing sensible to say. Meanwhile, McCain continued laying down lumber upside Obama’s pointy head. The Great One was so rattled he couldn’t remember the name of the G.I. whose bracelet he wore or even who he was debating.
There’s nothing to match brains and experience, and sadly for Obama’s supporters, he has neither. Kerry in the audience (immediately after the debate), holding his head in his hands told the tale. McCain beat Obama like a rented mule and the whole country saw it.
” BUSINESSES DO NOT PAY TAXES. Obama and the rest of his liberal, bottom-feeding scum know it and that is why these people are evil, pure and simple “
So true, and those greedy companies don’t get to keep all of those profits. How quickly the shareholders are forgotten by those who detest capitalism and actually having to work for a living.
P.S. Barack - your fortune comes from books and contributions............ not real labor in my opinion
Oh, so now we LIKE polls.
Which poll is this--that Drudge one? An online poll?
I don’t think I’ll be able to watch the Palin/Biden debate.
I really feel sorry for Biden.
