Round One: (Pennsylvania)Fence-sitters tilt toward a vote for McCain
The Morning Call ^ | September 27, 2008 | Josh Drobnyk and Brian Callaway

To a critical sliver of voters gathered at Muhlenberg College, Friday's debate provided a slight boost for Republican John McCain but left him and Democrat Barack Obama with much to do to sway fence-sitters in the next five weeks.

More than a dozen undecided voters gathered in a lecture hall, where they recorded their immediate reactions to the presidential candidates' responses using number keypads.

Six of the 14 voters said they were more likely to vote for McCain after the 90-minute session, with four saying the same of Obama. Four said they remained unswayed.

Bruce Glazier, a registered Republican from Upper Macungie Township who has voted Democratic in the past two presidential elections, said he was leaning more strongly toward McCain.

''McCain seemed a little more polished. He really unflapped [Obama] quite a few times,'' said Glazier, who works in credit and collections. ''I just felt Obama lost it. He is not as believable as McCain.''

Lynn Koehler, a 53-year-old registered Democrat from Lower Saucon Township, was undecided about whom to vote for before the debate. Afterward, she was leaning ''slightly more'' toward Obama.

''Because of how thoughtful he was,'' she said. ''He definitely seemed to know more than I thought.''

All 14 voters assembled by Muhlenberg College's Institute of Public Opinion were self-described undecided voters. Nine were registered Democrats, five were registered Republicans. They rated their answers on a scale of 1 through 5 on numbered keypads.

Christopher Borick, the institute's director, stressed that it provided an unscientific glimpse into how fence-sitters in a crucial region viewed the first head-to-head of the general election.

Afterward, five said they thought McCain had won the debate, versus two for Obama.(continued)

THIS IS IN PENNSYLVANIA, FOLKS!! LOL

No matter how HuffandBlo, the DUmmies, Kossacks, DNC, the MSM and other nutroots try and spin it, Senator McCain took Senator Obama to the woodshed last night.

Their criticism of his not looking Mr. Obama in the eye is juvenile...HE WAS WOUNDED IN VIETNAM, idiots! He can't turn on a dime like most everyone else can.

The MSM couldn't come up with anything substantive to criticize him on so they ran with that. When that debate ended, there was NO doubt in my mind that McCain won.

Those ignorant gun clingy religious fanatics finally woke up!

Look Obama is an idiot. 700 billion taxpayer funded bailout means that Obama’s socialist dreams of free health care, expanded Welfare and Free college go up in smoke. He has no clothes. The only man in the debate that has stood on substance and said he will save money, cut spending, cut earmarks, reduce debt, reduce taxes and grow the econmy was JOHN McCain. The only man that can end the Wars we fought with honor and integrity is JOHN McCain and to quote the VP candidate, whom I admire and who is a generational God Send, “The only man that has ever, really fought for you” and will continue to fight for you in this election is JOHN McCain.

Fence-sitters tilt toward a vote for McCain

But are the number of these fence-sitters significant enough to help McCain win ? That's the question.

They don't look at each other because of the impression it creates on the TV cameras it makes the speaker look “shifty” like they are avoiding eye contact with the audience.

Obama did the same thing yet they had NO problem with him avoiding eye contact. Curious how they feel about Obama’s obnoxious punk child behavior? How the O was so pathetically afraid of McCain he tried to desperately talk over McCain and interrupted him constantly?

But as the O camps neo Stalinist political tactics in MO and Mass are showing, they are desperately afraid the truth will out about their pathetic empty suit of a candidate. They have to hope the lies they are screaming about Obama, and McCain, will fool enough Americans to vote for this total clown of a candidate in Nov.

Think of any other Presidential cnaidate who would get a complete pass for not even being able to remember the name on the troop bracelet he wears? Cannot name ONE item, other then the Military, he would cut spending for no matter how desperately the moderator throws him life lines? Obama is such a transparent fraud. The Establishment Media should be humiliated by their slavish whore like propping up of this disaster in chief to be

Awww, how nice. Lynn must get positively giddy over Obama's questionable masculinity, the fact that he does the dishes every night, and brings Michelle only certified organically-grown flowers.

Anybody know if Charley Dent, PA-15th, is for or against the bailout? I tried to leave a message on his voice mail in DC, but it’s full.

I sent the “Black Republican” video to the owner of a “Hillary Supporters for John McCain” site to put on his front page. He gets millions of hits a month.

Obama just had like a 5-minute commercial during the Phillies game.

He's running those during all of the college football games too, and thus I am keeping buffer on my TiVo so that I can skip past it. I have a nice, big screen HDTV and I don't want Osammie the closet Muslim filthing it up!

I believe that these might be the spots he bought when McCain suspended his campaign for a few days. Fine. Let Osammie burn through his limited funds fast, weeks before the election!

from some websites i visited last night, i read comments from some dems saying they were going to vote for McCain based on the debate... they said Obama is not ready... he speaks in platitudes... i saw no Republicans saying they would vote for Obama based on the debate... there are probably more of these types of voters out there... i think we'll see it in the polls this coming week... hand tight!

Fence sitters? Let's see on the one hand we have a hero who has sacrificed beyond words for his country, continued to stay in the military for a total of 23 years, served his country for another 27 years in congress and the senate and was responsible for countless pieces of legislations, sone good some bad, fights spending, corruption regardless of party and has more knowledge about the military than just about anyone in DC.

On the other hand we have a marxists/socialist punk who has spent all of 150+ days in the Senate, has moved from community organizer to state legislature to the US Sentate without a single accomplishment to point to. Has personal ties to terroists, convicted felons and several anti-american, marxist front groups.

Hmmmmm, I don't know, can't make up my mind who to vote for, I'd better see a couple of more debates.

Fence sitters indeed. Full blown, brain dead morons is more like it.
