In recent memory, every presidential debate eventually distills down into a few catchphrases. Al Gore became known for his sighs and love of lockboxes. John Kerry actually served in Vietnam. Dan Quayle was no Jack Kennedy.
Barack Obama has a bracelet, too.
That inartful comeback will likely filter out through the political ether in the days ahead. What might not filter through our partisan press is that shortly after pointing out that, like John McCain, Obama sports a bracelet given to him by a military family, the Democratic candidate had to stop and look at it to find out the name of the soldier he's honoring.
That soldier is Ryan David Jopek. Barack Obama doesn't appear to have known that fact.
Here's his complete line:
"Jim, let me just make a point. I've got a bracelet too. From, Sergeant, uh, uh, from the mother of, uh, Sergeant, Ryan David Jopek."
Had a Republican, say Sarah Palin, made this gaffe, who wants to bet that we wouldn't hear this clip repeated endlessly during the post-debate spin shows and in the days ahead? How much would the sincerity of our hypothetical Republican politician be called into question.
I didn't hear it discussed once in the post-debate coverage. Did you?
Sidenote: Michelle Malkin reminds us that this incident is remarkably reminiscent of the now-famous incident of George H. W. Bush looking at his watch during the 1992 presidential debates.

It showed the American people that Obama is indeed a phony. Only wearing a bracelet as a campaign prop and then not even remembering the name on the bracelet? Someone probably gave it to him just before he went on stage. He hasn’t been wearing this thing very long, that’s for sure.

I thought, "Bush 41 looking at his watch moment".
It gave the impression that the only reason he is wearing the bracelet is just so he can tell a story for votes.
I thought the quote of the night, that highlights Obama’s total lack of judgement and naivety, was
“So we sit down with Iran and they say they’ll wipe Israel off the face of the map and we [Obama] say “no you won’t”.
This shows the vapid empty suit Obama for what he is. A worthless man in a nation that cares deeply about those fine men who defend us all.
For Obama, it's just scripted platitudes for our warriors. For McCain, it's a heartfelt and sincere acknowlegdement of those who give their all to keep us free.
I wonder if we had a "Bush looking at his watch" moment tonight. After McCain talked about the bracelet from the mother of a slain soldier, Obama mentioned that he had one, too....

I don’t think it matters. I think that this is going to be the rare case where the debates matter because even Zogby has said people don’t really know Obama. How can you know a void?
Wow! Talk about a blind squirrel finding an acorn!
I do have to give your Liberal friend some credit for taking off her Rose Colored Obama Glasses. That certainly takes courage.
...Meanwhile, I had to call a truce with one of my Christian Liberal friends due to some rather acrimonious email exchanges; I told her I'd rather not end our friendship over two men who probably wouldn't give us the time of day. And it's also one reason I refuse to discuss this with my mother.
“I’ve got a loverly bunch of coconuts.....”
“the Democratic candidate had to stop and look at it to find out the name of the soldier he’s honoring.”
Huh.
Guess it wasn’t “Seared....SEARED into his memory.”
He’s no John Kerry.
I can talk politics with this lib because she makes a point of telling me and everyone else that I'm one of the smartest people she knows, and she doesn't argue politics with me because "you know more than me."
Soon my takeover will be complete...and she's an ex-girlfriend, to boot!

The Bracelet Moment is a perfect distillation of 0bama.
Fraudulent concern that is little more than political posturing.
He has a bracelet, but he doesn’t even know the name on it.
But we’re supposed to believe that he really, really cares.
Just when I thought there could NEVER be a dem candidate as self-righteous and full of himself as Gore, along comes Kerry; when I thought HE was the worst they could do, they nominated Obama.
I work with people in their early twenties who think Carter is awesome. One is currently reading a book about Mao. Yes, I know, shocking, eh?

It will be interesting to see what Sgt. Jopek's mother has to say about this, if anyone in the media get's around to asking her.
National Review has now picked it up, just wait till all of blogosphere pick it up, and Rush picks it up on Monday.
Can we say Reconciliation? LOL!
I wish you the best.
I’ve only got a pair, they got here being gripped by the husk by a pair of African Swallows (the European variety being non-migratory.)
She’s probably another Cindy Sheehan and will cover for him.
But it won’t matter. Because this isn’t about her or her son, it’s about Obama being disingenuous.
Looks like a snotty, pompous, self-destructive trend, dunnit?
[I think their external candidates are *finally* synching with their internal attitudes of “superiority”. Seems to have worked real well for them for last 8 years, eh?]
:)
And, your friend was absolutely right. The cable talkers called it a draw, so that tells me that McCain actually won this one.
What’s the wind velocity and direction?
I don’t think I’d bet on that. If Obama can stumble over the name on the bracelet, how do we know he ever met the mother?
Don't give in to ignorance by dissing your candidate, even if it's saving a friendship. I have liberal friends, but I don't give an inch because the facts are on my side.
I do not mean to offend. I just don't buy into this get along at all costs mantra. It hasn't worked out for President Bush has it? I don't compromise when ignorance turns into stupidity.
Nobody questions my veracity, whether it's friend or family.
It will be interesting to see what Sgt. Jopek's mother has to say about this, if anyone in the media get's around to asking her.
Someone will ask. If she's a Cindy Sheehan type you can bet we'll hear from her; if not, it'll be a 10-second bit on the Tuesday afternoon news.
Maybe the ex would rather have you than Obama!
The image just flashed in my head:
Obama as King Arthur “riding” across the land proclaiming himself king, with his loyal servant Joe (Patsy)) Biden at his side banging the halves of coconuts together.
Then he happens upon the “old woman Dennis” Ayers, who lectures him on the functioning of an autonomous collective.
The possibilities are endless.....
I couldn’t believe Brit, Fred et al didn’t catch it, but as I recall, they didn’t catch Algore’s sighs the night of the debate either. It wasn’t till the next day that people started running with it. I couldn’t believe Fred actually said “no sound bytes from this one.” Welp... we’ll make sure Fred and all know what sound bytes WE heard, and that was the loudest of them all. Almost like someone laughing at the wrong point in a play and the entire audience and cast turning to stare at them.
Nobody else noticed the lack of military funding vote accusation lobbed at 0 because he was snippy about there being “no timetable”?
When the hell has any war ever had a *schedule*?
You fight ‘til you win, not ‘til “a month from Tuesday”.
A liberal is a mixture of high self-regard and absolute certainty that one has The Real Truth About Everything.
They can't go back now, they're convinced they Know It All and they have to Save the World with that knowledge.
I see old films of JFK, and for all my differences with him, I can see him watching tonight's debate and liking McCain and thinking "What's this other guy's story?" He was from a day when Democrats actually liked the USA. Even tonight, Obama was going on about how rotten this country is. Time and again I've heard that the candidate who's down on America loses, but again, he's a lib, he can't help himself.
So who plays the moistened bint?
:)
[and Mac just dropped a few dead cows on his head tonight]
Chriss Matthews brought out in an interview with Rachael Madcow that Obama on 8 different occasions agreed with McCain.
Matthews described this as Nixonian.
Nixon told John Kennedy he was right seven different times.
Respect the man who searches for Truth.
Fear him who says he’s found it.
RummyChick posted a YouTube link on the debate thread. It is the portion of the debate that is being talked about all over the 'net tonight...
Notice at the very end when Obama says, I've got a bracelet too...
He has to LOOK at the bracelet for the NAME! You can see it clearly in the video.
Obama: Ive got a bracelet too, From, um... uh... (looks at bracelet) Sgt. uh... the mother of Sgt. Jopek(sp?).
I've got a bracelet too - VIDEO AT YOUTUBE (Thanks to RummyChick):

Wasn’t that just sad... I feel for the mother of Sgt. Jopek, I really do.
BTW: I just put up a link to the video of that moment that has been put up at YouTube. It should be the post above this, I think... Anyway, I think we should spread not only this story, but help this particular outtake go viral. This is something almost everyone will immediately pick up on, IMHO. And, the libs at YouTube are having a hard time defending it.
Well, let’s see now ..... Hillary and the NOW gang and 99% of the PUMAs would hardly qualify as “Bints” since that term is generally regarded as mildly affectionate.
(And their sure as hell not moist.)

Looks like he's mentioned this bracelet before back in Feb 2008 at his acceptance speech...guess it was so memorable that he forgot his name already...
Thank you for posting this link. I was trying to figure out why Sgt. Jopek’s name sounded so very familiar. His family lives in a town right outside mine...
Thank you so much for posting that link!

“Just when I thought there could NEVER be a dem candidate as self-righteous and full of himself as Gore, along comes Kerry; when I thought HE was the worst they could do, they nominated Obama.”
Come now, you have to give it to Gore. The Florida debacle and his Nobel Prize-winning crusade against modern civilization put him head and shoulders above Kerry. As for Obama, if he loses, I don’t expect him to out-Gore Gore. I expect him to run again and again.
