Bush Invites Obama to DC to Work on Bailout Bill; Obama Accepts
ABC Blog ^ | 9/24/08 | Jake Tapper

ABC News has learned that President Bush called Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., this evening and invited him to participate in a meeting about the Wall Street bailout bill tomorrow afternoon in Washington, DC, with other congressional leaders, including Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Obama accepted the president's invitation, a source tells ABC News.

The invitation comes at an interesting time. The President has not been in the middle of negotiations with Congress, leaving that task to his Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

McCain earlier today announced he was suspending his campaign -- and his participation in the first presidential debate Friday night -- in order to return to the Capitol to work on the flailing bill. McCain's move has been denounced by Democrats and political observers as a political gimmick, though the McCain campaign insists the senator is trying to put politics aside to solve the stalled legislation.

President Bush's move could be seen as an attempt to aid McCain's gambit by creating a presidential-level meeting where the Arizona Republican is present.

Obama still intends to attend the debate Friday evening.

Why do you presume the debate on foreign policy will not take place next week if McCain doesn’t go to Ole Miss on Friday? ...

I think the call really went like this:

Bush: Barry, you know your job is in the Senate. I need you to do your job

BO: But i am on the campaign trail

Bush: I’ll tell you just one time. Get yer ass to my place tomorrow by 9AM. Or I will hand you your ass on a silver platter

BO: Uh, er, um, wha, oh, um, yes sir

probably a good move...I think Hussien knows he made a big mistake and afterall, he said he would come if called....

and Bush called him...which makes hussien look like a little child waiting for directions from the teacher....

now a McCain ad can say...."obama...he needs a special invitation"

I’ll make a wager....

McCain already knew that Pres Bush was going to call this “meeting” (Maybe it was McCain’s idea)— and so McCain issued the “invite” to Obama......

Rove— you brilliant bastid!

I heard on the radio around 3:15 today that the debate has been cancelled. Not sure if it’s official yet, though.

OMG, here we go again!! Has W learned NOTHING from being stabbed in the back by Dems??

Teddy Chappaquiddick gave us a piece of crap No Child Left Behind (NCLB) at Bush’s invitation and, as soon as the bill was signed, the Swimmer promptly went out and trashed W.

And, there have been others (although I have forgotten the others who stabbed W in the back.

Now, W wants to get the emptiest of empty suits EVER to help with the economy. The Obamessiah can’t make change for a fiver without a calculator and a 5th grader to help him figure it out . . . . . . what does he POSSIBLY have to offer in THIS situation!!??

I have more experience than the Obamessiah, why didn’t W ask me?? I even live in Texas!!

I can't figure this one out at all. It seems like Bush is pandering to Obama and Democrats. No one wants to face the truth. One question I do have is why do some Republicans feel that it is necessary to work or get along with Democrats. The feeling is not mutual. Democrats are the party Republicans should be beating no meeting.

From public relation point of view it is an extremely bad move for one of the Presidential candidates to ask for postponing a debate under any condition.

This makes 0bama look like he was derelict.
Good move, Bush.

Now we’ll get to see just how useless 0bama is.
Even better move, Bush.

LOVE IT! This is the moment we've all been waiting for: to see Barry appearing with the one guy his base loathes. Its guaranteed to depress, demoralize and enrage them!

I agree with you. Fine, McCain can suspend his campaign if he want as long as he flies in friday night for the debate. I mean he shouldn’t be afraid to spar with Obama.

Ms. Obama's husband will now help plan four more years of Bush- McCain failed economic policies?

Obama has no real beliefs.

Next week he will attend a Moose hunting class.

What a POS.

Whatever. So this Friday’s debate was cancelled - there will still be a future debate on a Friday? What does it even matter? They’re going to both debate on a coming Friday, eventually. So the Sunday talking heads will have their day, just not this Sunday, but a Sunday in the near future, for sure.
