(Listen Up Vegans...Hey Are You Paying Attention?) Eating Veggies Shrinks The Brain

Eating veggies shrinks the brain

14 Sep 2008

MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.

Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.

The link was discovered by Oxford University scientists who used memory tests, physical checks and brain scans to examine 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87.

When the volunteers were retested five years later the medics found those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were also the most likely to have brain shrinkage. It confirms earlier research showing a link between brain atrophy and low levels of B12.

Brain scans of more than 1,800 people found that people who downed 14 drinks or more a week had 1.6% more brain shrinkage than teetotallers. Women in their seventies were the most at risk.

Beer does less damage than wine according to a study in Alcohol and Alcoholism.

Researchers found that the hippocampus-the part of the brain that stores memories - was 10% smaller in beer drinkers than those who stuck to wine.

And being overweight or obese is linked to brain loss, Swedish researchers discovered. Scans of around 300 women found that those with brain shrink had an average body mass index of 27 And for every one point increase in their BMI the loss rose by 13 to 16%.

"Eating vegetables shrinks the brain"...

I would love to see the relationship between being a member of PETA and IQ scores.

It would be more accurate to say “Not eating meat shrinks brains”. Nothing complements a vegetarian meal like a big side-dish of meat.

Guys, let them eat...

I remember awhile ago, I was arguing w/ the biology teacher about people being born vegetarians. He finally suggested me to go and to look at my teeth at the mirror - are those teeth of the predator or not. The argument ended.

Maybe PETA guys have no teeth... could explain.

I guess you haven’t seen the Penn & Teller video series on PETA...

it does a really good job of correlating PETA membership with IQ.

hint: negative correlation

This BS has been covered yesterday. Veggies do not shrink your brain, Vitamin B12 deficiency does. And meat is but one source of B12.

also have you ever noticed that carnivores are muscular and fast like tigers, lions, hawks, coyotes and sharks while herbivores are often slow and chubby like cows, geese, sloths, panda bears and hippos

Vegetables are what food eats.

LOL! I saw this article and freaked out a little because I don’t eat red meat or pork. I have not eaten it since my teens and don’t miss it at all. I do eat chicken and a ton of fish though so I am hoping that compensates for some of it. The article also said dairy was good and I love cheese.

I could eat salad for breakfast and am a total veggie lover, but need protein to go with it or it gets bland.

Ever heard the expression 'strong as an ox' ?

Also, the gorilla, strong and intelligent, and like humans, a natural herbivore.

Don’t get me wrong... I love veggies... but you are so missing out on an inch thick medium rare prime dry aged ribeye grilled over a super hot lump charcoal fire... 3:45 first side, 3:25 second side and left to rest for 5 minutes. I would also suggest a Horseradishy Bearnaise sauce for dipping if desired.

Keeps the brain all happy.... belly too.

Humans are natural omnivores, beg your pardon.

God meant us to eat animals! He instructed us to eat animals.

What’s more, He, in His infinite wisdom, made animals out of meat. Why would he do that if we weren’t supposed to eat them?

I rest my case. :-)

Did my veggie shopping this afternoon - one case of long-neck hops, bag of chips, one corn-fed T-bone and two cigars. My food pyramid is covered.

When someone finally grows chocolate broccoli, I’ll make vegetarian fudge.
