Brent Bozell III: Savaging Sarah Palin
townhall.com ^ | September 03, 2008 | Brent Bozell III

Posted on 09/02/2008 10:14:49 PM PDT by kellynla

When MSNBC's Chris Matthews suggested in Denver that Barack Obama earned his present elevation in American politics, unlike "showcase appointments" like Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, he reminded the world of the peculiarity of liberalism. John McCain's selection of Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate underlined it. Liberals find no joy when Republicans select women or minorities for top positions. They are all fraudulent traitors to their own apparent group interests. Conservative blacks aren't really black. Conservative Latinos aren't really Latino. Now, conservative women are somehow not really women.

Newsweek's Eleanor Clift spoke for her colleagues on the Palin selection: "If the media reaction is anything, it's been literally laughter in many places ... In very, very many newsrooms."

This principle -- that hell hath no fury like a liberal who's been insulted by a conservative not sticking to white male appointments -- explains why President Bush successfully placed two white men on the Supreme Court. Only picking Harriet Miers was outrageous (although her capacity for the job was clearly an issue). Bush saw how upset the Left became when Clarence Thomas was nominated. John McCain could have played safe. He chose to mix things up and pick a woman who matched his tendency to mix things up.

That decision led inexorably to a big, fat Exhibit A of media bias. The media's treatment of Palin was nothing like their approval for Joe Biden, Obama's running mate, the week before. The Washington Post called the Biden selection an "infusion of experience and aggressiveness," and he was "a sharp-witted and energetic foreign policy expert." There was no mention that Biden was a liberal, or that while National Journal found Obama to be the most liberal senator in 2007, Biden came in close behind in third place.

"John McCain made a bold choice in not merely picking a woman, but picking a pro-life woman courageous enough to put her motherhood where her mouth is. Now the media want him to pay dearly for it. The idea that they would lecture anyone else about rumor-mongering or "Swift-boating" ought to be laughed off the public stage."

“Obama earned his present elevation in American politics”

So you can only earn your place if you’re elected, not if you’re appointed. I guess that means everyone who has ever served at the pleasure of the president is a fraud.

“If the media reaction is anything, it’s been literally laughter”

Did they laugh when Obama began his campaign? Probably not. I’ll concede that Obama won his nomination fair and square. But if he was held to the standards that Palin is held to now, he would not have had a chance to be acclaimed by the voters. I say, “Let the voters decide if Palin is laughable.”

Obama’s campaign promise to “UNITE” the country.....is proving to be another lie...

His campaign and HIS supporters are opening wounds and creating divisions that will NEVER be healed in our lifetime..

This time - they have gone far too far.....they have crossed the bridge too far and must now be distrusted and removed from any position of trust or power.....

They don’t deserve trust or power.....

Eleanor Clift works for Newsweek. So does Markos Moulitsas, the boy who helped Obama propagate the Palin baby smear. I’m not really interested in her opinion about anything.

“Tell that to the democrats in Michigan and Florida.”

As far as I know, the party had its rules, and the organizers in Florida and Michigan knew ahead of time. Let the Democrats have their rules.

That being said, Obama’s ability to win a general election is far from proven.

Eleanor Clift spoke for her colleagues on the Palin selection: "If the media reaction is anything, it's been literally laughter in many places ... In very, very many newsrooms."

That laughter will turn to frowns when they see the post-convention polls #s, and will turn to tears in November.

Wait till the country hears her talk about oil. She may not have gone to Harvard but she has been in charge of the commission that monitors 20% of the domestic production in the United States and has just signed a deal with the majors that greatly increases Alaska’s share of the production and proposes a huge new gas pipe line to the Lower 48. If she doesn’t get elected, Kuwait should hire her.

its panic fire by the libs methinks and it shows how terrified they are of her.

here is a woman who is a Governor, was a mayor, has balanced budgets, who nailed people in her own party for ethic violations, is married to a truly normal guy, has 5 kids and a daughter who is pregnant. she is patently all american and if anything, lives the american dream with the typical family problems we all face day to day. she obviously educated her daughter about the rights of new borns and made what some would class as difficult decisions herself. She has a son about to serve in the military in iraq.

if Palin was a lib, they would be fawning over her like a miracle woman.

of course Palin made the most horrendous decision in the libs eyes ever by deciding to be a republican. THAT IS what they hate. They feel aggrieved that she didnt abort, that she didnt encourage her daughter to exercise her right to terminate. They feel all ‘the work’ they have put into women is insulted because she didnt become a raging liberal bra burning man hater.

What is amazing is the comments about her experience. what truly defies logic is the argument that she has a family and therefore cant be vp (!!) that her daughter is pregnant, thats its alaska she is from etc etc etc. ALL of those comments really show how patently false a lot of liberals are. they are really misogynistic, inward looking, angry little people who spout on about rights BUT only so long as you live within the strict framework they have built. For someone to say or think that palin has less experience then obama is laughable to you and me but it truly shows in dramatic fashion the peculiar prism libs view the world, a man with NO, ZERO, NADA experience of how to manage a BUDGET is better then a woman who can...THATS the real issue here.

He owes a lot to Oprah.

You're absolutely right on that. It was immediately following her December trip down to South Carolina that galvanized the black vote behind the obamessiah. The once immensely popular Clintons began to be reviled as if they were Republicans.

They deliberately violated their national party rules.

And it's a good thing they did. Had they got full credit for their delegates on Super Tuesday, it is my contention that Shrillery would have prevailed. If we were facing her now instead of the obamessiah, we'd have a much more difficult task ahead of us.

I will make the assumption that the husband of Vice President Palin would take care of the family in her absence.

When JFK was elected, he had young children. It wasn't an issue then, it was Camelot.

Isn't it rather sexist to believe that the Father of these children could not care for them the way the wife of a President cared for hers?

I thought the Liberated Woman could be the bread winner while her Husband ran the house. Isn't that the ideal of Feminism, switching roles because roles don't matter when you are enlightened?

Am I missing something here, or is it just the same old hatred that all modern Liberals are inflicted with?

Far as I know, he already does take care of the family. Sarah Palin is a republican, doesn’t matter that she has lived and succeeded at (one would think) was the feminist goal. But, she has an “R” after her name, and doesn’t choose what those tolerant progressives think she should. Ergo, she is evil and must be destroyed.

I’ve always been an independent voter, but due to the (bottom feeding, stomach-turning)feeding frenzy over the Palins family I will vote straight Republican not only this year, but forever.

I beg to differ. How is it fair and square when the media flaks for you and runs interference for any and all embarassing issues that arise. NEVER, in my52 years of voting have I seen anything like it with the possible exceptioins of foreign media under govt. control, such as Pravda (Soviet Union).

...”His campaign and HIS supporters are opening wounds and creating divisions that will NEVER be healed in our lifetime”...

Sadly, this is true. One wonders how the other nations in the world are viewing the lies, the cruelty and the discrimination being directly against Sarah Palin’s family right now by a media which appears to manufacture the news beneficial to the political candidate or idea they support. Somewhere in Biblical prophesy is a quotation concerning the end of time when good will be called evil and evil will be called good. Folks, we have arrived at that point and the divisions created by this election season will not be healed for a long, long time. We are separated into a political nation and then, into the rest of the population who work to support the bottomless money pit the politically corrupt create to enrich themselves. Most people who work have compassion on their fellow human beings and would never reach out to destroy lives for nothing. Sarah Palin’s family shares the values of most Americans and nothing reported about her as scandalous is anything but commonplace in the human community. I believe the enemies of freedom are very fearful of Sarah and they feel they must destroy her influence before America gets the chance to know her. They do not care what kind of suffering they cause but I am here to say that God does care about all this and I believe judgment will fall on the proud and the powerful who are using those things to destroy the innocent.

You are right about Oprah giving him a boost. Oprah did a show which featured something called a Neti Pot. Basically a device for cleaning out the nasal passages. A friend of mine that works in a healthfood store says people came in droves after the show asking for “Neti Pots”. Support shifted toward Obama only after Oprah endorsed him publicly.

I was watching the ‘Is it Legal?’ A double-standard for women in politics? on the O’Reilly factor. Those ladies where furious at the judgements being heaped on Governor Palin based on some absurd standard of motherhood. You could tell that, as professional women, they strongly identified with Palin and passionately defended her as if they were defending themselves. I think the media may be underestimating the backlash that is ocurring with working women who are fed up with the double standard and are angry at being judged deficient as mothers because they work.

His campaign and HIS supporters are opening wounds and creating divisions that will NEVER be healed in our lifetime.

After half a century of life, I am a pretty cynical guy, and I have come to not expect much from the press, politicians, or "people" in the way of values, morality, or rational thought and behavior. The degradation was obvious, but I have always believed though that we would muddle on and things would be OK, within an acceptable civilizational/sociocultural range, no matter who was in DC, or how smarmy and biased the press gets.

But after what I have seen in this election, I am not so sure that we will last much longer without a serious realignment to the values, decorum, and culture that has allowed us to grow and survive as a nation to this point. The degradation has become disintegration.
