Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on Sen. Bob Casey, Jr.s speech last night at the Democratic National Convention:
It was billed as the breakthrough moment: the Democratic National Convention, which prohibited Gov. Bob Casey, Sr. from making a pro-life speech at the 1992 Convention, allowed his son to speak last night on the subject. But what happened? Casey blew it: The best he could do was to offer the standard cliché about promoting the common good by seeking common ground.
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. never settled for a common ground approach to fight racismhe sought to win. Similarly, Gov. Casey did not seek to fight abortion by looking for common ground: He knew that the common good could only be achieved by protecting the lives of innocent human beings. Moreover, when it comes to human trafficking, the Democratic Party Platform does not seek common groundit wants strong legislation and enforcement. But when it comes to abortion, the Party jettisons a legal strategy, offering instead the tired mantra about achieving common ground.
The Casey collapse can only be understood against the forces he must deal with on a constant basis. For example, the Democratic National Convention has already been host to the presidents of NARAL and Planned Parenthood, and yesterday featured an Emilys List event. Emilys List is the nations richest PAC, and it only gives money to abortion-rights women candidates for office. At its special gathering on Tuesday, it was able to attract the most radical pro-abortion women in America: not surprisingly, Hillary and Michelle were there. That this is the only venue where those two could ever find common ground speaks volumes. It also explains why Casey settled for clichés.
I missed it.He backs Obama-enough said.His Father’s star was bright.
He’s all the more a fool because he knows the truth. If he does not repent, his punishment will be severe.
Freep-mail me to get on or off my pro-life and Catholic List:
Please ping me to note-worthy Pro-Life or Catholic threads, or other threads of interest.
Satan has to hire extra help with all the soul buying these days. He will rue the day when politicians are the majority group in Hades.
I'd love to see someone at the convention call for "common ground" on, say, offshore drilling.

Exactly!!!!!!
It reminds me of when I went to an art fair recently in Ann Arbor, an extremely liberal town. I was very happy that there was one pro-life booth amidst all of the Planned Parenthood, PETA, and Obama booths. I got some balloons from the pro-life booth for my boys and was looking forward to making a statement as I went around amongst the aging hippies.
I was extremely disappointed when I blew up the balloons and they simply said "Celebrate Life." Celebrating life is a laudable goal to be sure. However, no one would ever guess that these balloons represented the pro-life movement. It was like someone went out of their way to find the least offensive and least controversial slogan they possibly could find. I had no idea that the art fair would have all of these political booths, or I would have proudly worn an "Abortion is murder" t-shirt or at least "Abortion Stops a Beating Heart."
How can we compromise with the executioners in the face of the slaughter of the innocent unborn?
A Catholic and Pro-Life woman would be a wise pick for McCain. Not sure if Fiorina (nee Sneed) is Catholic. She’s in a second marriage. She’s definitely pro-life, though. Same for Sara Palin, but she’s not Catholic and despite being a very strong pro-lifer, also voted against a law in Alaska that would prohibit state benefits to alternative lifestyle housholds.
It seems that most potential VP candidates have a short-circuit somewhere. I would like to see Gov. Bobby Jindal get the nomination - he seems solid on all fronts, and the timing of the expected Hurricane Gustav will give him quite a bit of national publicity if he corrects the horrid mistakes his predecessor made during Katrina.
Pragmatically, though, the optimum choice for McCain would be a pro-life Catholic woman. That would probably be enough to sway pro-life Democrats who are repulsed by Obama’s voting record, it would put to rest any anti-Catholic accusations against McCain, and it would be the first woman VP in our nation’s history, which might sway enough Hilary malcontents to keep Obama out of the Oval Office...
Pennsylvania should be ashamed of him...the only reason he got elected was the *love* Penn had for his dad.
Santorum is pro-life in both words and actions.
Little Casey is a big-time blower. Him to Daddy Casey is like Bore-ack to the aforementioned Mr. King. Faint, wimpy, wispy, distorted reflection.
Casey Junior ran as a pro-lifer, playing upon his father’s reputation. But once in office, he has voted with the Democrats in favor of abortion.
He is another stinking liar, and a shame to his father.
There’s a reason the guy’s known as “Silent Bob”....
According to America's Founders, life, and the liberty to enjoy it, are unalienable. The word, "unalienable," implies the great truth of Thomas Jefferson's summation that, "The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them."
What many citizens today fail to reason through is that the so-called "right to choose," is an invented euphemism of recent decades designed to mask the ugly act of "destroying" the life and liberty of the child in the womb. So was the use of the word, "fetus," which is so much less personal than the word, "baby." By those euphemisms, an artificial right was bestowed by unelected justices of the Supreme Court of the United States on only one class of citizens (women) to destroy the Creator-endowed, therefore "unalienable" life and liberty of an as-yet-unborn citizen.
This question is the most important one to be considered in the 2008 election of a President.
Consider the logic utilized by those who say they personally oppose taking the life of the child in the womb, but believes in the trite and tired old phrase of "a woman's right to choose."
Why could a 70-year-old daughter not use the same reasoning to apply to a "right to choose" to get rid of an elderly mother whose care is threatening her own health? (And don't say it is not realistic to claim the health risk that many face!)
Or, why should the nation's law not provide that same "right to choose" to both men and women who consider another individual to be a threat to their personal health or wellbeing, an inconvenience to their lifestyle, or merely a burden they cannot take care of?
Clearly, America's laws against the taking of life do not allow for a citizen's "right to choose" murder as an optional way of solving a personal dilemma, no matter how perplexing or burdensome.
Unmask the faulty logic of the fence sitters, and let them articulate what is their real reason for favoring the taking of a life in the womb! Is it not possibly because they do not see children in the womb as beings "endowed by their Creator with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"?
The candidate who is most likely to appoint Supreme Court justices who understand this basic principle underlying our liberty and the American Constitution is the only logical choice to lead this nation, in this voter's humble opinion!
Casey is a fool!! The people of PA, should be ashamed of the liar!! You voted a good senator out for this POS!
There is no joy in Mudville, mighty Casey has struck out.
Unfortunately, many traditionally Democrat Catholic voters, who had voted for Rick Santorum in the past, voted instead for Casey because they finally had a Democrat candidate they thought they could, in good conscience, support. They quickly found out that it didn’t matter how pro-life he was PERSONALLY, he couldn’t do a single thing for the pro-life cause within the Democrat Party. And if I’m not mistaken, he also folded, and went along with the Dems on several votes in which he could have stood up for his pro-life beliefs, but went along with the Party leadership instead. I hope they learned their lesson about voting for ANY Democrat, pro-life, or not.
dead babies vs. live babies.
there is no common ground.
Bishops of Pennsylvania? hello?
Anyone there?
