Amid promise of peace, Georgians live in terror (Russian Militia Accused of Rape and Looting)

Russian paramilitaries on the road towards Tbilisi. The Russian army left Gori in convoy and stopped about 30 miles from the city.

The first armoured personnel carrier nudged past the top of the hill. It paused as if getting its bearings, and then set off towards Tbilisi. Behind it, an endless column of Russian military vehicles appeared on a shimmering horizon - trucks, tankers, and a beaten-up Nissan.

.....................................

Where was he from? "Chechnya. We've come here to help," he said.

For the terrified residents of Gori and surrounding villages, it didn't seem like help. Yesterday morning, as the Russian tanks advanced from their base in South Ossetia they passed through Georgian controlled-villages, telling residents to hang out white flags or be shot.

Behind them, according to people fleeing those villages, came a militia army of Chechen and Ossetian volunteers who had joined up with the regular Russian army. The volunteers embarked on an orgy of looting, burning, murdering and rape, witnesses claimed, adding that the irregulars had carried off young girls and men.

Just like 'Old Times.'

Red Army troops raped even Russian women as they freed them from camps

'They raped every German female from eight to 80'

How many have been on it?
A platoon, a company perhaps?"

The accurate description would be Terrorists. Cosidering that many of these "Paramilitaries" are Chechen Muslims, gives it an additional meaning.

Despite Putin’s lies that the Russians have begun withdrawing, independent reports from Georgia indicate that they are pushing deeper into the breakaway republic.

Woo hoo!! Welcome to Cold War, the Sequel. I predicted this years ago when Putin was elected and was soundly criticized on FR for not knowing what I was talking about, including by some of our FReeper FRiends in Russia. Their keyboards seem to have gone silent since those days.

Putin is an old communist who is slowly restoring the “glory days” of the USSR and the Cold War.

When I look at that terrain, I understand how the Russians could advance so quickly, the region is a Tanker’s paradise.

Chechen paramilitaries? God help us: that explains the kidnapping of young girls and boys.

“Soldiers” don’t wear ski masks, for crying out loud. There have been enough reports of skuzzy behavior by irregulars that we ought to make it clear that we ARE holding Russia accountable for the actions of its proxies in Georgia, and follow through. Enough of the “we can’t do anything about Georgia” nonsense. There is plenty we can do, and we need to start showing some spine and start supporting Georgians. If Bush won’t, does anyone have practical suggestions on how private Americans can offer help and support?

Pay closer attention to the relations between the US and Russia. Things have been getting chilly between us and, as a result of this invasion in Georgia, are going to get much chillier.

Good map. It especially highlights how the Russians claimed territory that cuts deep into Georgia's recognized International border as "Speshul" because the Russians want it.

"Here, let me issues some Russian Passports to members of Eastern Slobobia - and Viola! You are Russian citizens!"

WE MUST send the Georgians military aid.

So far we have only sent humanitarian - but even that is ticking off the Russians.

Bush says US military will deliver humanitarian aid to Georgia

The Russians should also be mindful that we have sent them humanitarian aid in the past as well when they needed it.

This is not the look of a "soldier" - but armed thugs.

“So far we have only sent humanitarian - but even that is ticking off the Russians.”

WE should send the Georgians the same kind of “humanitarian aid” we sent the Afghans in their war with the Russians. Only when Russians start coming home in body bags in larage numbers will Putin and his policies lose credibility with the Russian masses and his own party.

Thinking back to the Beslan School Massacre where Chechen Muslims tortured, raped, and then butchered small Russian school children. We were outraged and so very much in sympathy with the Russian families.

Vladdie Boy Putin OTOH couldn't wait to team with Iranian Muslim terrorists pretty much because they were sticking it to us every day and actually killing our young men and women in Iraq.

I'm not saying Vladdie's a muslim, I'm saying he doesn't give a crap about the suffering and abuse of his own people and he WANTS to extend it to us.

He does give a crap about OIL and OIL PIPELINES aka upping the profits of his fellow KGB/Mafiya cohorts at the expense of the world. He does have goals of crushing people who are in his way or who make him feel inferior. He wants revenge against anyone or any country that ever made him feel not up to par.
