HILLARY Clinton would be the Democrats' White House nominee today if former presidential hopeful John Edwards had come clean earlier about an extra-marital affair, a top aide to Senator Clinton believes.
"I believe we would have won Iowa, and Clinton today would therefore have been the nominee," Howard Wolfson, who was the combative communications director for Senator Clinton's doomed campaign, said on ABCNews.com today.
Mr Wolfson also said Senator Clinton's campaign knew about the affair but kept quiet.
"Any of the campaigns that would have tried to push that would have been burned by it," he said. Former senator Mr Edwards, whose wife Elizabeth has terminal breast cancer, confessed at the weekend to having had an affair in 2006 with filmmaker Rielle Hunter.
But Mr Edwards, who was the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 2004 and bowed out of this year's White House race in late January, denied fathering the six-month-old baby of Ms Hunter.
Mr Wolfson said Edwards voters in Iowa, whose presidential caucuses kicked off the 2008 race in early January, would have been behind Senator Clinton rather than Barack Obama.
"Our voters and Edwards' voters were the same people," he said, citing internal polling by the Clinton campaign.
"They were older, pro-union. Not all, but maybe two-thirds of them would have been for us and we would have barely beaten Obama."

It’s really incredible the Clintonistas would make this kind of a statement - but I say, keeping going - stir up a hornets next within the DNC.
next=nest
Drive by media cost Clinton the nomination — I bet this doesn’t go down well with a certain BJ.
And yet another sore breaks out on the face of the Obama campaign, this one thanks to John Edwards!
Since Obama can not win, maybe John McCain should invite John Edwards’ penis to speak at the victory ceremony.
Bill Clinton could have decided to “take one for the team” — he could have let Rielle’s name slip in an interview, saying she reminded him of other women lurking around candidates..... :^)
once Bill or someone put it out there, the MSM might have finally felt some motivation to pursue the story......
I think the ‘rat convention is going to be a bar room brawl.
I’m shocked too, that the Clintonistas are still at it, still trying to make excuses as to why Hillary lost.
Didn’t Hillary and others say that, while it was a hard fought campaign, there comes a time to end it and unite behind the winner? Does Wolfson stirring this pot help with party unity and all that?
To hear this kind of crap, it makes me believe the rumors that the Clintons hold grudges, never ever forget any slights, real or imagined, and have something like Nixon’s enemies list keeping tabs on people. And the 900 FBI files help them with blackmail too.
“I think the rat convention is going to be a bar room brawl.”
What was your first clue? ;)
It seems like nearly EVERYONE remotely connected to Edwards knew about this but said nothing.
This is the unkindest cut of all - the Clintoons moralizing about Edwards’ adultery, and blaming it for the fact that (a) people don’t like the Clintoons, and dumped them for Hopey Changey; and (b) the dems are now having buyers’ remorse about ol’ Hopey Changey. The dems are a complete joke, and I just hope the majority of Americans see it in November.
Poor Hillary, always getting screwed over (metaphorically only) by an adulterer.
Well, didn’t she say she’d campaign her heart out for Obama? In early June I believe that was. Two months later, she finally makes an appearance to campaign for Obama, and within a day we get this news from the underside of her campaign.
This is simply how Clintons campaign for those who beat them.
Uh-huh.
Right.
Edwards could be president today if the Clintons had been thrown out of the White House like they should have been. So...
I did not hear them complaining when Ross Perot handed them the election. What goes around........
Oh, really?
Isn't this a big story? The Edwards "affair" has been in Hillary Rodham's famous files, all along?
What else might be in these files, one might wonder?
Hmmm, let's just look under "O" for Obama....
