A D.C. police state
Washington Times ^ | August 5, 2008 | Masthead Editorial

There is a neighborhood adjacent to Capitol Hill in Washington that is under siege. But the police can't turn things around on their own. On any given day, residents and visitors to the Trinidad area of Northeast are forced to traverse unfamiliar streets because D.C. police have barricaded the neighborhood as an anti-crime tactic - and when law enforcers accomplish that they are intent and in effect creating a police state in the nation's capital. Granted, there is considerable blood being shed in Trinidad. But how undemocratic to set up check points.

The same government that defies the Supreme Court over the Second Amendment and wanted to search homes without warrants or probable cause, so I'm not surprised. They don't deserve self government.

Foot patrols in DC are one of the times I would not object to cops carrying assault rifles.

How does a cesspool “self govern”?

I've always advocated that the nation's capital should be moved to a better position, maybe to north-central Missouri or south-central Illinois. D.C. should be declared a historical site, and the new capital should be just that, a federal capital.

That's the underlying problem with Washington. It's so far away from the rest of the nation, and even Jefferson feared that the capital would become inadequate as the young nation acquired land.

Me,too. Try the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

Just like Rome got New Rome (Constantinople) and revived itself and lived for another thousand years, maybe we can get a New Washington (”Columbia”?) and get a fresh start.

Washington D.C. is a shining beacon of the success of liberal policies. With the voting populous consistently choosing to the left by over 90% in every election, there is no better example of the final utopian result of an unfettered liberal society.

How does a cesspool "self govern"?

1. Fire useless city employees.

2. Use the savings to provide every law abiding citizen with a firearm and a training class.

3. Adopt a "Castle Doctrine" statute along the lines of Texas.

It would be nice if the ordinary citizens had their 2nd amendment rights to carry weapons.

Indeed they don’t. DC is the whole county under an Obama administration.

"I've always advocated that the nation's capital should be moved to a better position"

In the late 1800's there was just such a proposal inCongress to move the Capitol to the geographic center of the continent (Just on the north end of Kansas).

D.C. has home rule again at thet time and the mayor, Boss Shepherd bribed, cajoled, lobbied etc. etc.,Congress into leaving the Capitol where it is.

It still is a good idea to move our capitol to Kansas; safer too.

Something easier to do: reduce the borders of DC to just the section where the federal buildings are. Take the slums in the north and east and cede them back to Maryland. Have DC proper be a gated community, where if you do not work for the federal government, then you have to move out

It is indeed heartwarming that you should come to that conclusion. Not to disparage your solution; but, it might be much more economical if one were to engage a fleet of Caterpillar D9's and simply push the whole damn cesspool into the Potomac River.

Or how about this: have DC not have any sort of welfare program. No food stamps, no welfare, no section 8. If you need any of that, get on a bus to somewhere else.

If what you meant was to push ALL of DC into the river, including the federal buildings, then I heartily agree with you

Since 9/11 there has been a recurring theme from the Chicken Littles about some batch of bad guys setting off a nuke in one of our major cities.

When New York City is mentioned - or San Francisco or Los Angeles or Chicago, I have to admit the financial hit could seriously hurt us. When they talk about D.C. though, I have to think a bit harder to find a down-side to that possibility. I haven’t been there in many years but both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were neat, clean and orderly compared to Yokohama and Tokyo.

Did you ever stop to think that it became a cesspool because we didn’t fight harder when we should have?

Sorry, FRiend, but I don’t live there and don’t elect the vermin that run the place.

My calls to my elected representative over the years about conditions in DC have been met with inaction or blockage by the Rats.

The time is not yet quite ripe to have an armed march on the place.
