Last March, we received word that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was offsetting his jet travel demands by purchasing green credits. The cost of Schwarzeneggers travel was to be annually invested in sustainable forest management projects. At that time, it was reported that the Governor was flying twice-weekly from his office in Sacramento, CA to his mansion in Brentwood, CA. We firmly believed then that the offsetting was, at best, a band-aid for a habit that in one hour would do more damage to the environment than a small car could inflict over the course of one year.
Now, the LA Times is reporting that Schwarzeneggers habit has increased to commuting nearly every day by private jet a move that regardless of offsetting, is widely considered as damaging to a champion of environmental issues and cover-boy for various green magazine issues. From the article,
Administration officials say Schwarzenegger is well aware of this and makes amends by purchasing pollution credits for the carbon dioxide his jet releases. The credits fund efforts worldwide to reduce greenhouse gases, such as projects that harness energy from wind, landfill gas and farm waste, although they dont eliminate the pollution from Schwarzeneggers plane. Flying the Gulfstream and other jets the governor uses costs as much as $10,000 an hour. Some conservationists say Schwarzenegger is essentially attempting to buy a clean conscience with the carbon offsets, which cost about $43 an hour.
In defense, Schwarzenegger says his family needs him and such daily trips warrant the commute. While I can understand the personal importance of such an action, as a representative of the people and a role-model for sustainable initiatives Arnold should suck it up and simply crash in Sacramento for a bit. Commuting daily in a private jet erodes the pedestal of anyone championing green living and warning against the dangers of climate change. Offsetting is simply not enough. As weve said before, you have to be the change in this shift to make an impression.
Sounds like Schwarzenegger is morphing into Al Gore.
It’s simply ABSURD. He needs to move his family to Sacramento like every other governor.
A photo of his mansion. I wonder whether he uses more or less energy than
Gore? Is this the guy the libs want to put forward to criticize Bush on global
warming?
It is if you're a hypocritical swine. Again I point out that the President's personal residence (his only one) in Crawford is completely off the grid, completely "sustainable." While the eco-warriors who attack him (Arnold and Al Gore) are enormous carbon hogs. It's a disgrace.
What’s absurd is the whack jobs that take this stuff seriously. There is no global warming, which is why the new orwellian phrase is “climate change”.
If he wants to commute in a 747 and can pay for it, good.
The buying of NOTHING
What utter crap.
PS. BTW... all those forest fires going on in Ca. probably spew more smoke pollutants in the air per day than all the planes and autos in the USA combined!
“His family needs him.” Snort!
Hey Arnold, did you hear the one about the poor people in South America kicked out of their forst homes so Eucalyptus plants could be planted with your offset money?

When I was growing up hypocrisy was a bad thing. These days it is celebrated.
Perhaps, if it wasn't for the fact that he wishes to impose an austere lifestyle on the rest of us, because he himself buys the into the hoax. On top of that, while consuming hundred and hundreds of gallons of jet fuel, he considers the coat line off his state to precious to get any oil for the rest of us.
Regardless of the warming stuff, jets are polluting, the central valley, where Sacramento is, is listed as the worst air in the country. Flying back and forth from his mansion to the capitol daily is ridiculous.
hey, he has to pander to green fascists too, y’know...;)
Algor and Schwartzenegger can do whatever they want. They’re movie stars.
I don’t blame the gorebull warmers. I’d be upset too, if the Terminator exposed my marxist scam for what it is: a system with the goal of allowing the elite in society to do as they please living like kings, as everyone else suffers, riding bikes, living off of energy credits and food credits, totally dependent on the government for everything.
There’s a reason for the 2nd Amendment.....
I get this vision of a battery of 88’s concealed in the woods near Pismo Beach.
But one indiscretion by a right wing Republican and it's the stocks and dipping chair, no delay at all.
