The U.S., Iraq, And 100 Years (So Obama Wants To Pull Out Of S. Korea, Too?
CJR ^ | 4/1/2008 | Zachary Roth

Ever since John McCain said at a town hall meeting in Januray that he could see U.S. troops staying in Iraq for a hundred years, the Democrats have been trying to use the quote to paint the Arizona senator as a dangerous warmonger. And lately, Barack Obama in particular has stepped up his attacks on McCain's "100 years" notion.

But in doing so, Obama is seriously misleading voters - if not outright lying to them - about exactly what Mccain said. And some in the press are failing to call him on it.

Here's McCain's full quote, in context, from back in January:

Questioner: President Bush has talked about our staying in Iraq for fifty years...

McCain: Maybe a hundred. Make it one hundred. We've been in South Korea, we've been in Japan for sixty years... That'd be fine with me as long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed. Then it's fine with me. I would hope it would be fine with you if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where Al Qaeda is training, recruiting, euipping and motivating people every single day...

This is wand will not go away. Obama has to be taken to task on this, and here is how to do it:

1.) John McCain talked about staying in Iraq for 100 years as long as Americans aren't being injured harmed, wounded, etc, to stop Al Qaeda in a very volatile part of the world.

2.) John McCain brought up that we have been in South Korea for 50 years.

3.) If Barack Obama has a problem with McCain's position on this, then he would be for pulling out of South Korea, too.

4.) If Obama is asked if he favors pulling out of South Korea along with Iraq, and say no, then he can be asked why he favors pulling out of Iraq if we will stay there in a similar way like we are now in South Korea.

5.) If Obama says that troops cannot be maintained there like In South Korea, then he can be pinned on the fact that 15 of 18 political benchmarks have been met, great political progress has been made and is being made, and that we have Al Qaeda pretty much smashed there. Would Obama want to jeopardize Iraq Democracy with a precipitous pullout?

Of course there's an out for him: McCain will never press his advantage. Why won't he? That's the $64,000 question.

Yes. Yes he would. He'd do it in a heartbeat if he thought it would help him politically in the short term.

Obama's personal history doesn't show an ability for long term planning. His entire political career is the result of third parties pulling strings to put him the right place with the right backing. If not for others doing the planning for him, he wouldn't be where he is now. He'd still be a middle class, mixed race attorney with a white American upbringing in the private sector legal arena. And from what I've heard to date, it doesn't sound as if he was all that good at being an attorney.

People have been saying that McCain won’t take Obama to task on practically anything. McCain has been taking Obama to task on alot of issues. He can’t do it all alone, though.

In 1945, Americans freed S. Korea from decades of Japanese oppression .

The Truman administration pulled our troops out of Korea too soon, in 1949.

In 1950, Truman sent troops back to Korea in order to RE-free S Korea from N. Korean oppression.*

30,000 Americans died in Korea in the remaining 30 months of Truman's administration.

*Truman said our military was going to fight a "police action" against "bandits."

And sending Americans back in after an Obama administration precipitious pullout - to take Iraq back from terrorists and an Iranian puppet regime - would lead to thousands of dead Americans in Iraq.

Yes, Obama is a visionary.

How long has the unsuccessful “War on Poverty” been going on? When do we pull out the troops (dollars) from that trumped up fiasco?

Yes, you’re right. Lately, McCain HAS been acting a little more like a bulldog. Let’s hope he keeps it up. He has nothing but winning issues on his side — IF he capitalizes on them!

Yes, if Democrats are going to ask for results from Republicans on Iraq, then Republicans can ask for results from Democrats on issues like the “War on Poverty.”

BTW, the war in Iraq is getting excellent results for America.

15 of 18 benchmarks now met.

Dems said we weren’t making political progress, so we had to leave. Now that political (as well as military progress ) is being made in Iraq, Dems still want cut and run/retreat and defeat.

Can you pin mercury in one place? The haloed one has the advantage of a totally compliant media as well as a nation willing to accept platitudes for policy as long as something different is promised.

If you want a lesson in how screwed up the voters are, look at the polls that have 70% say the country is going to hell and compare to the 65% who feel their own lives are going quite well. The effect of a media pounding away that America is in trouble.

So that N. Korea will not pour over the border and take over.

And the lib media would treat it like they did when Hezbollah attacked Israel in 2006: Only respond negatively to it when N. Korea is attacked back.

Oh please. The South Korean army can handle whatever the North throws their way. We need to pull our troops out of that industrialized country THAT CAN DEFEND ITSELF WITHOUT US.

Why are we there? That is a good question. On my last visit there in 1991, I was greeted by a huge anti-American, flag burning crowd, what gives - do they like us or not?/Just Asking - seoul62.......
