Critical Threats: Blank When None
Al-Qaeda Draws New Recruits Via Internet

Al-Qaeda is using the Internet to recruit vulnerable young people to its terrorist network, according to a programme aired on Saudi Arabian TV late on Tuesday.

Umm Osama, the founder of al-Qaeda's first women-only website, al-Khansa, joined several others on the programme to discuss how they renounced jihadist ideology.

Among those who sought a response to this question was an imam from the Medina mosque, Saleh Ibn Awad al-Mudamsi, and the father of a young al-Qaeda suspect held in an Iraqi prison. Read More

Killings turn focus on San Francisco sanctuary law
my way ^ | 7-24-08 | PAUL ELIAS
Posted on July 24, 2008 5:03:15 PM PDT by Nachum

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The scene repeats itself daily on city streets: a driver gets stuck bumper to bumper, blocking an intersection and preventing another car from turning left.

But authorities say that was enough to cause Edwin Ramos to unload an AK-47 assault weapon on a man and his two sons, killing them.

The deaths immediately drew public outrage, which intensified when authorities revealed that Ramos, 21, is an illegal immigrant who managed to avoid deportation despite previous brushes with the law.

“Brotherhood Against Democracy”
By Walid Phares

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Unsur akhaka thaliman kana am mazluma

“Stand with your brother, should he be oppressed or oppressor” — (Old proverb in the Arab world used by contemporary Jihadists)

Seven years after 9/11 the ongoing confrontation between the free world and the forces of Jihadism seems to be revealing another broader more dangerous dimension: the emergence of an undeclared solidarity between regimes and organizations which —despite their enmity for each other — come together to destroy freedom and obstruct its spread.

This transnational brotherhood is increasingly revealing itself in international relations, despite the assurances of Western diplomats and academics that such a de facto web, do not really exist. While lobbying efforts in the West are attempting to convince the public that the ideology of Jihadism doesn’t exist and that Democracies’ foreign and economic policies are at the roots of terrorism, stunning evidence proves the opposite. Not only Jihadism is alive and thriving, but it is influencing a much larger bloc of countries.”

Ahmadinejad: We Won’t Back Down From Our Right To Nuclear Technology

In a speech broadcast by the Iranian media, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated that Iran would not back down “one iota” and would not give up its inalienable right to develop nuclear technology.

He added that no one could set conditions for Iran, and that if conditions were to be set, then it would be Iran that would set them.

He also said, “Right now, Iran is an international superpower.”

ATF offers $5,000 reward in Wal-Mart bomb scare (N.C.)
July 24, 2008

A substantial reward is being offered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for placing an explosive device at Boone Wal-Mart on Sunday.

The bomb was discovered by an employee opening the store’s main entrance just before 6 a.m. Upon arriving on the scene, Boone Police and fire officials called the Wilkes County special operations bomb squad, the closest specialty unit in the region.

Terrorist threat to airports over lax staff security (U.K.)
23 Jul 2008

It is feared that hundreds of foreigners are being allowed to work in high security parts of Britain's airports without passing proper criminal record checks. Despite warnings that terrorists have tried to place sleepers in jobs "airside" in terminals, no attempt has been made to check whether foreign workers have committed any offences abroad.

A Government-commissioned report today urged for foreign criminal record checks to be made compulsory for airport workers to combat the threat to security. But it called only for new staff to be checked and not those already in post. The paper, written by former civil servant Stephen Boys Smith, warned that the greatest threat of terrorism in future may be from "internal attack" and added that the "threat is varied and unpredictable." It said that "long term systemic changes" are needed to combat the threat from within.

There are an estimated 200,000 staff in the "airside'' parts of airports employed in shops, cafes or as cleaners in the departure lounge. Others may be employed as baggage handlers, security guards or driving buses between aircraft and the terminal. The vetting process - using a criminal records check (CRC) - assesses workers only for crimes committed in Britain. Foreign workers - arriving from inside or outside the European Union - are not checked in their country of origin.

This means that someone with a conviction for firearms or explosives offences committed abroad could, for example, take a job loading bags on to aircraft at Heathrow, Gatwick or any other airport, provided they had committed no crimes here.

Police disrupt 13 terror networks (U.K.)
July 23, 2008

Scotland Yard has disrupted 13 terrorist networks in London in the last financial year. During the 12 month period, there was an average of a suspected terrorist incident in London every other day.

There were 181 incidents, slightly up on the previous year's figure of 177 and police took 4,346 calls on the anti-terrorism hotline. The figures were revealed in a document prepared for the Metropolitan Police Authority.

Its author Supt Neil Haynes, from Scotland Yard's Specialist Operations unit, said disrupting a network could involve several features. "Some cases may result in the foiling of a planned major bombing campaign, others may reduce the funding or resources available to mount such an attack," he said.

Last November, Jonathan Evans, the Director General of the Security Service MI5, said it was aware of about 2,000 people involved in terrorist-related activity in the UK, and there could possibly be a further 2,000 it was unaware of. This year Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, said there were 200 terror networks and 30 plots under investigation.

Key Benazir Bhutto assassination witness shot dead
July 23, 2008

Khalid Shahenshah, who was the former Pakistan prime minister's security chief at the time of her assassination, was killed in a drive-by shooting as he left his house in the southern port city of Karachi on Tuesday, police said.

Mr Shahenshah, 45, was riding in Mrs Bhutto's bullet-proof car when she was killed in a suicide attack in the northern city of Rawalpindi on December 27. He was expected to be called to give evidence at a United Nations probe into her death.

"He was a key witness in the case and was also interviewed by the Scotland Yard experts who came to Pakistan to investigate her killing," said Waqar Mehdi, the junior information minister of Sindh province. "There is a possibility that his killing could be linked to his status as a witness, although investigations are still underway."

UK court: Radical cleric can't appeal extradition to US
July 23, 2008

A British court ruled Wednesday that a radical Muslim preacher accused of helping to set up a terrorist training camp in rural Oregon cannot appeal against extradition to the United States to face terrorism charges.

Justice Igor Judge refused Abu Hamza al-Masri's application to challenge his extradition in the House of Lords, the country's highest court of appeal. The High Court ruled last month that al-Masri should be sent to the US, where an 11-count indictment accuses him of offenses including supporting al-Qaida and the Taliban.

Australia: Police accuse Muslim charity of terrorist links
24 July 2008

Sydney - Australian police have accused a Muslim charity of channelling aid to Palestinian militants through an Islamic organisation banned by Australia and the US for its alleged terrorist links.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald daily, officers raided the office of Muslim Aid Australia on Thursday and spent several hours there. The charity, which states its main aim is to address the "persistent and recurring problems of global poverty", was recently accused of involvement with the British-based group, Interpal, banned in Australia and a labelled terrorist organisation by the US.

Interpal is a Palestinian aid organisation that has been accused of funding the Islamist movement Hamas. It was reportedly investigated and cleared by the British Charity Commission twice in the past 11 years but has remained on a banned list in Australia. An Australian media report published earlier this month said MAA had admitted using Interpal to help funnel charity money into Gaza during Israeli border closures earlier this year.

However, MAA reportedly changed its statement when questioned by the charity watchdog, the Australian Council for International Development, stating there had been no involvement with Interpal. Interpal is a British-based humanitarian group also known as the Palestinian Relief and Development Fund. It has been cleared of terror links by the British Charity Commission but failed three years ago to have its proscribed listing revoked in Australia.

According to its website, Muslim Aid was established in 1989 by concerned humanitarians that saw a need for professional Muslim relief organisation. It says 80 percent of the worlds' refugees, facing ongoing crises and disaster, come from Muslim backgrounds.

Morocco: Immigrants to Europe barred from country because of 'al-Qaeda links'
24 July 2008

Rabat - A group of Moroccan citizens living in Europe have been barred from returning to their country because of their alleged links with the al-Qaeda.

According to a report on the Casablanca-based newspaper Assabah, the security services have come up with a blacklist of the names of 28 people living in Europe who have been accused of links with the terrorist network. The list of names has been handed over to the customs authorities who have to deal with the hundreds of thousands of Moroccan immigrants returning home in August for their summer vacation.

The report said that 18 out of the 28 people are residents in Belgium and Spain.

A few days ago, the chief of the Moroccan secret services Abdel Haqq Baso, revealed that the authorities had foiled a plan to carry out attacks on a number of hotels in Morocco popular with tourists. A similar operation in May led to the arrests of 11 people.

In the past five years, the Moroccan authorities are believed to have disbanded 30 alleged terrorist cells active in the country. It is believed the authorities have new leads and are planning to carry out fresh arrests.

Taliban using text messages, ring tones
Sophisticated media network is an effort to undermine Afghan government
July 24, 2008

KABUL, Afghanistan - The Taliban have created a sophisticated media network to undermine support for the Afghan government, sending threats by text message and spreading the militia’s views through songs available as ring tones, according to a report released Thursday.

The International Crisis Group report comes as the Islamist militia that was ousted from power in Afghanistan by the 2001 U.S.-led invasion is making a violent comeback, particularly in the country’s south and east.

The Taliban’s propaganda exploits civilian killings by foreign forces and corruption in the U.S.-backed government to add to Afghans’ disillusionment about their lives, according to the report by the Brussels, Belgium-based group. It said the Afghan government and its foreign allies should respond more quickly to their mistakes and highlight the Taliban’s atrocities.

Pak Taliban prepares hit list; security agencies on high alert
July 24 2008

Islamabad - Pakistan's security and intelligence agencies have been put on high alert following reports that local Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud has prepared a hit list of 300 high-profile figures, including top political leaders. Among those that could be targeted are the leadership of the ruling Pakistan People's Party, Awami National Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement and anti-Taliban Shia and Sunni clerics, said source close to an intelligence agency.

Personnel from intelligence and law enforcement agencies, officials from the federal interior and provincial ministries and journalists could also be targeted by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan of Mehsud, who was blamed for the December 27 assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto.

The families of the political leadership and law enforcement personnel are also believed to be at risk, the sources told the Daily Times newspaper.

"Of course this type of information is received from time to time," said CID chief Saud Mirza, adding that Pakistan is still under threat. "We are in coordination with all the intelligence agencies," he said.

The MQM's leadership was alerted by law enforcement agencies when members of the Jundullah militant groups were arrested on charges of attacking the former Corps Commander of Karachi, Lt Gen Ahsan Hayat. During interrogations, the arrested men confessed that they targeted the MQM's leadership as its members were perceived as "American agents".
