Al-Qaeda Draws New Recruits Via Internet

Al-Qaeda is using the Internet to recruit vulnerable young people to its terrorist network, according to a programme aired on Saudi Arabian TV late on Tuesday.

Umm Osama, the founder of al-Qaeda's first women-only website, al-Khansa, joined several others on the programme to discuss how they renounced jihadist ideology.

Among those who sought a response to this question was an imam from the Medina mosque, Saleh Ibn Awad al-Mudamsi, and the father of a young al-Qaeda suspect held in an Iraqi prison. Read More

Troops in Iraq Capture Five Suspects, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2008 – Coalition and Iraqi forces caught five suspected terrorists and seized two weapons caches in Iraq over the past three days, military officials said.

In separate raids in Baghdad today, troops captured a suspected kidnapping cell member and nabbed a man with alleged ties to al-Qaida leaders in Iraq and other countries. The operations targeted al-Qaida in Iraq’s financial infrastructure around the Iraqi capital, military officials said.

In a related operation yesterday, coalition forces detained an alleged al-Qaida in Iraq financier and one additional suspect during a raid near Samarra, 70 miles north of Baghdad.

Elsewhere in Iraq yesterday, Iraqi security forces discovered two munitions caches in the Rashid district of southern Baghdad. An Iraqi citizen in the district’s Bayaa community turned over an 82 mm mortar round to Iraqi National Police. An explosive ordnance disposal unit removed the weapon. In the Saydiyah neighborhood about an hour later, Iraqi soldiers found two rocket-propelled grenades and two sticks of TNT in a house.

“The Iraqi security forces are continuously patrolling the Rashid district every day to provide a safe and secure environment for the Iraqi people,” said Army Maj. Dave Olson, a spokesman for the 4th Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team.

During operations July 21 in Baghdad’s Rashid district, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained a known member of an Iranian-backed “special group” in the Abu Tshir community. Military officials consider the detainee a roadside-bomb expert.

“Any time our soldiers detain a known, high-level criminal, we are reducing violence on the streets of Baghdad,” Olson said. “Our efforts are focused on providing a safe and secure environment for the 1.5 million citizens of southern Baghdad.”

Coalition, Afghan Forces Kill Armed Militants

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2008 – Coalition and Afghan forces killed groups of enemy fighters during operations in Afghanistan this week, military officials said.

While coalition forces yesterday searched compounds in the Sayed Abad district of Wardak province for a Taliban commander, a cadre of militants inside a barricaded house attacked troops with grenades, machine guns and small-arms fire.

Coalition forces fought back using small arms and grenades, and they called in an air strike, killing an unknown number of the enemy fighters, military officials said.

Combined forces also came under ambush during a July 21 operation in the Maruf district of Kandahar province. As troops patrolled the area, militants attacked from a fortified position, using small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. The combined force returned small-arms fire and called for close-air support. The retaliation killed several militants and destroyed their attack position, military officials said.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan on July 21, Afghan national security forces and coalition forces observed a group of enemy fighters amassing along a ridgeline in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province. As the armed fighters moved into fortified fighting positions, the combined forces engaged them with small-arms fire and called for close-air support, killing the militants.

No Afghan or coalition forces were injured or killed during the engagement, military officials said.

Al-Qaida senior leader grants rare TV interview ( Calls for destruction of Pakistan Government)
MSNBC ^ | Monday, July 21, 2008 4:10 PM ET | Carol Grisanti and Robert Windrem, NBC News
Posted on July 23, 2008 5:21:09 PM PDT by Ernest_at_the_Beach

n a rare move, one of al-Qaida’s highest-ranking leaders has conducted an on-camera interview with a journalist and, in the process, called for the destruction of Pakistan’s government.

It was the first time since 2002 that any top al-Qaida official has taken the security risk of sitting down for an interview with a bonafide journalist.

Abu Mustafa al-Yazid, an Egyptian whom U.S. intelligence officials have identified as the al-Qaeda’s third highest-ranking official, sat for an interview with Najeeb Ahmad, a reporter for Geo TV. Geo TV is a private Pakistani television channel.

In the interview, Yazid, also known as Sheikh Saeed, called for the destruction of Pakistan’s government which he said had “betrayed” the jihadis. Yazid swore that al-Qaida would recapture Afghanistan. And he reiterated al-Qaida’s position that “all Americans, not just the American government” are the enemies of Islam.

Ghost Rider Company finds cache in cemetery

Multi-National Division – North PAO

DIYALA, Iraq – Soldiers from Ghost Rider Company, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, found three weapons cashes in Al Ujami July 20, one disguised as a grave site in a children’s cemetery and two more in the Palm Groves.

The caches consisted of AK-47 rifles, belts of automatic machine gun ammunition, 12.7 mm rounds, more than 100 7.62 rounds, anti-aircraft guns, an 82 mm mortar system, various mortar system parts and more than 200 anti-aircraft rounds.

“These cache finds will disrupt the terrorist networks in Diyala Province and will prevent the terrorists from conducting indiscriminate attacks against innocent civilians,” said Maj. Jon Pendell, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment spokesperson. “This demonstrates that the terrorists will violate the dignity of, and will not respect, innocent Iraqi families by using a burial site of innocent children to hide weapons.”

“Operation ends in Hangu; Government opts for negotiations in northwest”
By BILL ROGGIO
July 23, 2008 3:47 PM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “But the Taliban have not laid down their weapons after conducting peace talks with the government, nor have they stopped attack on the Pakistani military or across the border in Afghanistan.

The security situation in northwestern Pakistan and in neighboring Afghanistan has rapidly deteriorated since the government initiated its latest round of peace accords with the Taliban and allied extremists in the tribal areas and settled districts in the Northwest Frontier Province. Peace agreements have been signed with the Taliban in North Waziristan, Swat, Dir, Bajaur, Malakand, Mohmand, Khyber, and Orakzai.

Negotiations are under way in South Waziristan, Kohat, and Mardan. The Taliban have violated the terms of these agreements in every region where accords have been signed.

The Taliban, al Qaeda, and allied terrorist groups have established more than 100 terror camps in the tribal areas and the Northwest Frontier Province, US intelligence officials have told The Long War Journal.”

$50K Reward In 2007 Slaying Of Navy Reservist
cbs2.com ^ | Jul 23, 2008 5:15 pm US/Pacific
Posted on July 23, 2008 8:08:44 PM PDT by BenLurkin

LOS ANGELES Authorities are offering a $50,000 for information in the drive-by shooting death of a U.S. Navy reservist outside an El Sereno liquor store in 2007.

Jesus Guevara, 24, a U.S. Navy reservist, was walking from the liquor store at 3:15 p.m. on Aug. 18, 2007 toward his parked car when someone fired at him from a dark-colored, mid-size car, wounding him in the back, police said. He died three hours later at a hospital.

“It’s not fair to lose him, to not have him around,” Guevara’s aunt, Maria Corona said. “We miss him terribly every day.... The irresponsible coward that did this has to come forward. They need to know that they took a life that was the engine that moved this family.”

Detectives say they don’t have a motive for the shooting. The reward is being offered by the Los Angeles City Council for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect.

Guevara served in the Navy as an aircraft mechanic for four years. When he returned to civilian life as a reservist, he worked for a steel company in South Gate.

The apparently lifeless body of the child, an Uzbek boy younger than 11, is the focus of the grisly half-hour video by the Islamic Jihad Union — a radical Uzbek group practically indistinguishable from Osama Bin Laden’s network, according to U.S. officials.”

“Germany: Three suspected jihadists arrested — “plotting ‘imminent’ and ‘massive’ attacks” on Air Base and commercial airport”

BERLIN -
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “And a top legislator said the group could have struck “in a few days,” noting a “sensitive period” that includes the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Officials said the hydrogen peroxide, stored in a hideout, could have been mixed with other additives to produce a bomb with the explosive power of 1,200 pounds of TNT.

“This would have enabled them to make bombs with more explosive power than the ones used in the London and Madrid (transit) bombings,” Joerg Ziercke, the head of Germany’s Federal Crime Office, said at a joint press conference with Harms.

The three suspects — two Germans and a Turk — first came to the attention of authorities because they had been observing a U.S. military facility at the end of 2006, officials said. All three had undergone training at camps in Pakistan run by the Islamic Jihad Union, and had formed a German cell of the group.

The Islamic Jihad Union was described as a Sunni Muslim group based in Central Asia that was an offshoot of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an extremist group with origins in that country.

“There was an imminent threat,” German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung told ARD broadcaster.”
