Al-Qaeda Draws New Recruits Via Internet

Al-Qaeda is using the Internet to recruit vulnerable young people to its terrorist network, according to a programme aired on Saudi Arabian TV late on Tuesday.

Umm Osama, the founder of al-Qaeda's first women-only website, al-Khansa, joined several others on the programme to discuss how they renounced jihadist ideology.

Among those who sought a response to this question was an imam from the Medina mosque, Saleh Ibn Awad al-Mudamsi, and the father of a young al-Qaeda suspect held in an Iraqi prison. Read More

Dillon Dam Road closes to the public

Denver Water officials will close Dillon Dam Road to public car traffic as of midnight Tuesday, July 8, out of concern that the dam might be “targeted.”

Denver Water is the state’s largest water provider, serving more than 1 million customers in Denver and some surrounding suburbs.

RCMP shows high-tech items found in home

The star piece of physical evidence in the prosecution of Momin Khawaja made its courtroom debut yesterday.

RCMP Sgt. Sylvain Fiset, of the force's explosives disposal and technology branch in Ottawa, took the witness stand about 3 p.m. and held up a glass-and-metal case containing a mounted collection of printed circuit boards, wires and an antenna.

Prosecutors allege Mr. Khawaja intended to assemble the electrical components into the case's infamous "Hi-Fi Digimonster" that would transmit radio signals to detonate fertilizer bombs placed at public sites around London, England, in 2004.

The reason may lie in the scarcity of volunteer suicide bombers underlined in al-Qaeda recruitment videos and the unpopularity of these attacks.

No doubt!!!!! Thanks for the ping Oorang.

Al-Jazeera Airways complains - tighter security

Al-Jazeera Airways has asked Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to tighten security at the Kuwait International Airport, saying there are serious security lapses at the airport, reports Awan daily.

Sources say the airliner sent a letter to DGCA highlighting security slackness and cited the example of a Syrian national who went very close to the aircraft without either having a ticket or passport and without passing through any security check.
Sources added that the expatriate was arrested and interrogated by airport securitymen and was later referred to Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh Police Station.

35 suspected Al-Qaeda recruiters arrested in Morocco

Snippets: "This network recruited and sent around 30 candidates for suicide operations in Iraq and three volunteers to fight alongside members of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb," police told Map. "The suspects were also planning acts of terror in Morocco." Map's source said.

Man accused of aiming laser at jets held without bail

A parolee who reportedly told investigators he aimed a laser at three jetliners and a police helicopter out of boredom was ordered held without bail Monday pending trial on charges of interfering with the operation aircraft. Dana Welch, 36, of Orange has been held on a parole violation since his arrest May 22, a day after the use of the laser pointer was reported.

Man fined for laser attack on plane

Shining a laser beam into the cockpit of an incoming Air Canada flight, endangering the crew and 20 passengers on board, has landed a Calgary man a $1,000 fine.

In rejecting a call for a conditional discharge, provincial court Judge Allan Fradsham said such a sentence would not deter others from such activity. "The offence is serious in that it had the potential of putting lives at risk," Fradsham said in a written decision released yesterday.

David Mackow, 29, pleaded guilty in April to an Oct. 15, 2007, charge under the federal Aeronautics Act of endangering a flight by shining a laser beam into the cockpit of an Air Canada Dash 8 plane.

He also did the same to the pilot of the Calgary police HAWCS helicopter that arrived to investigate the complaint and eventually caught Mackow.

“Private company to patrol Dillon Dam
Drivers should see security vehicle on Dam Road”
BY ASHLEY DICKSON
summit daily news
Summit County, CO Colorado

SUMMIT COUNTY —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: ““There will now be a 24/7 security presence on the dam, which will alleviate the burden on both law enforcement and the caretakers,” said Craig Austin, manager of safety and security at Denver Water.

A number of closures last winter, including one lasting nearly two weeks to deal with a potential terrorist threat, forced commuters onto the interstate or Swan Mountain Road. The threat — two snowboarders from Afghanistan filming a video — was quickly investigated and cleared, but road closures continued.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “According to Denver Water, the decision to increase security was not a direct result of the security breach that occurred on the dam in early January, but rather a decision that coordinated best with other local agencies.”

“Suburban Man Held Without Bond In Toxin Case
Federal Agents Say They Found Dozens Of Vials Containing Deadly Nerve Agent Inside House”

Reporting
Mike Puccinelli ROCKFORD, Ill. (CBS):

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A northwest suburban Chicago man is being held without bond on charges that he possessed more than two dozen vials of a deadly nerve agent inside his home.

At a bond hearing Monday in Rockford, authorities said they found 25 vials of the nerve agent tetrodotoxin (TTX) inside Edward Bachner’s Lake In The Hills home. They also found 20 vials with TTX residue.

TTX, the toxin found in puffer fish, is deadly in 50 percent to 60 percent of cases and has no known antidote.

CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli reports that Edward Bachner didn’t say anything when reporters asked if he was trying to kill his wife, but he declared his innocence by waving his head ‘no.’

That was after he was lead into a sheriff’s van so he could be transported back to jail. Bachner isn’t charged with trying to kill his wife, but is accused of unlawfully possessing a deadly toxin.

But in court, federal prosecutors say he tried to hire a hit man to kill his wife after logging onto a white supremacist website.

Bachner’s attorney says the FBI never took the alleged murder-for-hire scheme seriously when it first came to light several years ago.

“He was never arrested,” said James Marcus, Defense Attorney. “They did question him. But more telling on that point is the fact that his wife was never notified of the alleged assassination plot.””

“Swiss Wary of Islamic Backlash Over Call to Ban Minarets”
Thursday, July 10, 2008
By Patrick Goodenough, International Editor

(CNSNews.com) – Fearing a backlash in the Islamic world, the Swiss government will mobilize opposition to those who want to ban the building of minarets. This comes after a right-wing party secured the necessary public support to force a referendum on the matter.

Campaign organizers this week delivered to the seat of the federal government in Bern a petition signed by more than 114,000 people supporting a move to add a clause to the constitution prohibiting the construction of minarets, the towers or spires that rise from some mosques.

The executive Federal Council subsequently announced in a statement that the 100,000-vote threshold for a referendum had been achieved.”

“Christian group denied right to display cross”
Jeff Johnson - OneNewsNow - 7/9/2008 7:30:00 AM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A Christian ministry in Virginia banned from displaying a cross in a public park over the Fourth of July weekend says it will continue pursuing its legal case against the City of Chesapeake.

After last year’s Independence Day parade in Chesapeake, Virginia, several groups were allowed to set up booths in the city’s Lakeside Park. Christian Rights Ministries (CRM) set up its booth, which included a 12-foot-tall white cross. But city officials ordered the group to remove the cross, calling it “offensive,” “way out there,” and “blatantly Christian.” When city officials refused to respond to calls and letters from the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) on behalf of CRM’s founder Steve Taylor, the group sued.”

Airport Worker Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Using Post to Illegally Export Military Items

CHICAGO — A former ground services coordinator at O’Hare International Airport has been sentenced to two years in prison for using his position at the airport to help smuggle $396,000 in cash and illegally export weapons scopes, military night vision goggles, and a cellular phone “jammer,” announced Patrick Rowan, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security, and Gary Hartwig, Special Agent-in-Charge for the Chicago Office of Investigations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Riad Skaff, age 69, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Lebanon, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by the Honorable Joan Gottschall. In addition to his prison sentence, Skaff was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.

On Aug. 17, 2007, Skaff voluntarily pleaded guilty to all nine counts of an indictment charging him with bulk cash smuggling; entering an aircraft and airport area in violation of applicable security requirements with the intent to commit a felony; exporting and attempted export of defense articles without first obtaining a required export license from the State Department; and attempted international export of merchandise, articles, and objects contrary to U.S. law.

“The illegal exportation of controlled U.S. technology is tantamount to breaching the border,” said Gary Hartwig, ICE Special Agent in Charge for the Chicago Office of Investigation. “We will aggressively investigate those whose activities present a threat to our national security.”

According to court documents, Skaff had been employed by Sunline Services, Inc., as a subcontractor assigned to Air France, since Feb. 3, 1999 at O’Hare International Airport. Skaff worked as a ground services coordinator and possessed an active airport security badge granting him full access to all secure areas of Terminal 5 of the airport, including the jet ways and tarmac, without being subject to security and screening.

In October 2005, Skaff told an undercover agent from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that he would he would be able to get $25,000 in cash aboard a flight from Chicago to Paris without being subject to inspection, stating that, “I am in charge of the plane, everything.” Skaff went on to explain to the agent that he was undertaking a large risk, stating “it is dangerous, if they catch me, they take me to jail.”

According to court documents, Skaff later smuggled $25,000 in cash past airport security so the undercover agent could take it aboard an Air France flight to Paris without declaring the export of $10,000 or more in currency, as required by law. The undercover agent told Skaff he was taking the cash to Lebanon to open a business.

Court documents indicate that in December 2005, Skaff accepted $6,000 from the undercover agent to circumvent airport security to help smuggle $100,000 in cash, along with a military-grade cellular phone jammer, aboard an Air France flight to Paris. In November 2006, Skaff accepted $15,000 from the undercover agent to route $271,000 in cash past airport security so it could be smuggled aboard an Air France flight to Paris.

In January 2007, Skaff accepted $5,000 from the undercover agent to bring a bag containing four night vision rifle scopes and two military night vision goggles past airport security to be smuggled aboard an Air France flight to Paris. Shortly thereafter, Skaff was arrested by ICE agents at O’Hare International Airport.

This investigation was conducted by agents of the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with assistance from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection; and the Chicago Police Department’s Counter Terrorism Section. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles E. Ex from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

“China detains 82 ‘terrorists’ targeting Olympics: state media”
Thu Jul 10, 3:27 AM ET

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “BEIJING (AFP) - Chinese police have this year detained 82 suspected terrorists in the nation’s Muslim-populated far northwest who were planning to attack the Beijing Olympics, state media reported on Thursday.

The 82 belonged to five groups that “allegedly plotted sabotage against the Beijing Olympics,” Xinhua news agency reported, citing the head of the police in Urumqi, the capital of remote Xinjiang region that borders central Asia.

It was the first time that Chinese officials had given a total number of suspects detained in a series of raids this year.

The announcement came a day after state press said police shot dead five Muslims who allegedly wanted to launch a “holy war”.”
