Al-Qaeda Draws New Recruits Via Internet

Al-Qaeda is using the Internet to recruit vulnerable young people to its terrorist network, according to a programme aired on Saudi Arabian TV late on Tuesday.

Umm Osama, the founder of al-Qaeda's first women-only website, al-Khansa, joined several others on the programme to discuss how they renounced jihadist ideology.

Among those who sought a response to this question was an imam from the Medina mosque, Saleh Ibn Awad al-Mudamsi, and the father of a young al-Qaeda suspect held in an Iraqi prison. Read More

Detainee Transfer Announced

The Department of Defense announced today the transfer of two detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Algeria. These detainees were determined to be eligible for transfer following a comprehensive series of review processes.

The transfer is a demonstration of the United States’ desire not to hold detainees any longer than necessary. It also underscores the processes put in place to assess each individual and make a determination about their detention while hostilities are ongoing – an unprecedented step in the history of warfare.

The Department of Defense has determined – through its comprehensive review processes - that more than 65 detainees at Guantanamo are eligible for transfer or release. Departure of these detainees is subject to ongoing discussions between the United States and other nations.

Since 2002, more than 500 detainees have departed Guantanamo for other countries including Albania, Algeria, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom and Yemen.

There are approximately 265 detainees currently at Guantanamo.

Treasury Identifies New Aliases
of Al Rashid and Al-Akhtar Trusts
Pakistan-Based Trusts Previously Designated for Supporting al Qaida

Washington - The U.S. Department of the Treasury today added to its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) new aliases under which Al Rashid Trust and Al-Akhtar Trust International are operating in an apparent effort to circumvent sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Nations.

“We are very concerned about designated entities reconstituting themselves under new names in attempts to circumvent sanctions and continue funneling money to terrorist activities,” said Adam J. Szubin, Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). “OFAC will continue to put the public on notice when we find that a designated entity is trying to operate under the cloak of a new alias.”

Al Rashid Trust
AKA: Al Amin Welfare Trust
AKA: Al Amin Trust
AKA: Al Ameen Trust
AKA: Al-Ameen Trust
AKA: Al Madina Trust
AKA: Al-Madina Trust

Al Rashid Trust was designated on September 23, 2001, in the Annex to Executive Order 13224 and was added to the UN 1267 Committee’s List of individuals and entities associated with Usama bin Laden, al Qaida or the Taliban on April 24, 2002. As of mid- 2007, Al Rashid Trust was operating under the name Al Amin Welfare Trust and the other AKAs listed above.

A1-Akhtar Trust International
AKA: Pakistan Relief Foundation
AKA: Pakistani Relief Foundation
AKA: Azmat-e-Pakistan Trust
AKA: Azmat Pakistan Trust

Al-Akhtar Trust International was designated pursuant to E.O. 13224 on October 14, 2003, and was added to the UN 1267 Committee’s List on August 17, 2005. As of July 2007, A1-Akhtar Trust International was using the alternate name Pakistan Relief Foundation and the other AKAs listed above. As of May 2007, Pakistan Relief Foundation had taken over all assets of Al-Akhtar Trust, and Al-Akhtar Trust’s senior leaders had begun working on behalf of Pakistan Relief Foundation.

Al Rashid Trust, Al-Akhtar Trust International, and the AKAs named today are designated under Executive Order 13224, which targets terrorists, those owned or controlled by or acting for or on behalf of terrorists, and those providing financial, technological, or material support to terrorists or acts of terrorism. Assets these designees hold under U.S. jurisdiction are frozen and U.S. persons are prohibited from engaging in transactions in property or interests in property blocked under the order.

“Jordan’s Legal Jihad”
By Stephen Brown
FrontPageMagazine.com | Thursday, July 03, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In a brazen attempt to stifle free speech in the West, a Jordanian court recently summoned twelve European citizens to answer criminal charges of blasphemy and inciting hatred.

Among those sought by the court is Geert Wilders, the Dutch liberal politician who made the anti-Islamist film, Fitna. Released last March, the Dutch MP’s production caused an uproar in Islamic countries, since it equated Islam with violence. Now a Middle Eastern court would like to prosecute Wilders for the “crime.” (Ironically, a Dutch court dropped charges against him for inciting hatred against Muslims with his film the day before the Jordanian court issued its subpoena.)

The Jordanian court’s move is only the most ambitious attempt to silence debate about Islam. Until now, the preferred strategy has been to file civil lawsuits in western courts to intimidate critics. The latest version of what may be called the legal jihad is even more disturbing.”

“Khaleej Times Online >> News >> MIDDLE EAST Iran mulls death penalty for Internet crimes”
(AFP)

2 July 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “TEHERAN - Iran’s parliament is set to debate a draft bill which could see the death penalty used for those deemed to promote corruption, prostitution and apostasy on the Internet, reports said on Wednesday.

MPs on Wednesday voted to discuss as a priority the draft bill which seeks to “toughen punishment for harming mental security in society,” the ISNA news agency said.

The text lists a wide range of crimes such rape and armed robbery for which the death penalty is already applicable. The crime of apostasy (the act of leaving a religion, in this case Islam) is also already punishable by death.

However, the draft bill also includes “establishing weblogs and sites promoting corruption, prostitution and apostasy”, which is a new addition to crimes punishable by death.

Those convicted of these crimes “should be punished as “mohareb’ (enemy of God) and “corrupt on the earth’,” the text says.

Under Iranian law the standard punishments for these two crimes are “hanging, amputation of the right hand and then the left foot as well as exile.”

The bill — which is yet to be debated by lawmakers — also stipulates that the punishment handed out in these cases “cannot be commuted, suspended or changed”.”

Press Release A080703a-240
July 3, 2008

Al-Qaeda attacks averted across Iraq

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces conducted operations spanning central and northwestern Iraq Wednesday and Thursday, killing two terrorists and detaining 10 suspected terrorists while targeting al-Qaeda networks.

A precision operation in Baghdad Wednesday netted a man assessed to be the leader of multiple al-Qaeda in Iraq cells in the Southern Belt around the city. The suspect is believed to be responsible for bombings, kidnappings and attacks against Coalition forces. Also Wednesday, Coalition forces in Baghdad detained a man suspected of involvement in the AQI propaganda network.

In Mosul Thursday, Coalition forces captured an alleged terrorist leader and one suspected associate. The alleged leader is assessed to oversee kidnappings, assassinations and extortion operations.

Coalition forces targeted an AQI foreign terrorist facilitator Thursday near Ribat, a town along the Euphrates River near the Iraq-Syria border. As the force secured the building, one terrorist ran to the back and barricaded himself in a room with a weapon. Coalition forces perceived a hostile threat and engaged the terrorist, killing him. The terrorist was later identified as the targeted individual, who helped foreign terrorists cross into Iraq to conduct attacks. Three additional suspects were detained.

In Sharqat, about 90 kilometers south of Mosul, Coalition forces targeted the leader of a local AQI cell Thursday. When the force called for occupants of a building to surrender, two people complied but one man refused to follow Coalition forces’ instructions. Perceiving hostile intent from the man, Coalition forces engaged and killed him. On the roof, Coalition forces discovered a suicide vest, and outside the building, they found an underground tunnel. They safely destroyed the explosives and tunnel, and detained three suspected terrorists in the operation.
