Jersey-born judges get it right on guns
NJ Voices ^ | July 01, 2008 | Paul Mulshine

I was walking around Rutgers the other day when I came upon a memorial to students who had fought in World War II. The list of names was impressive, but I imagine most major universities in America have similar memorials. It was only when I happened to walk by Old Queens that I noticed something you wouldn't see on just any campus. It was a plaque honoring the Rutgers men who had fought in the Revolutionary War.

Nearby is the spot from which Alexander Hamilton directed cannon fire against the British in cover of George Washington's army. You don't see that sort of thing in the so-called heartland, which would be in the heart of nowhere if not for the Jersey boys. Yet hardly a day goes by that I don't receive an e-mail from some self-proclaimed 100 percent American in a red state informing me that I can't possibly be a true conservative because I and my newspaper column originate here in New Jersey. I am thankful to Antonin Scalia and Sam Alito for forever laying that myth to rest. It is a curious fact that two-ninths of the membership of the U.S. Supreme Court originates in that city where George Washington so famously routed the Hessians back in 1776. And the Trenton two were instrumental in the historic decision last week that, to the consternation of liberals everywhere, returned the Constitution to its revolutionary roots. snip...

You might argue that anyone could have concluded the same. But the genius of the Jersey-born Scalia was in expressing that opinion in terms that are irrefutable even to liberals. Liberals love to argue in favor of both individual rights and the right of revolution, assuming the revolutionary in question looks good on a T-shirt, à la Che Guevara.

I guess Paul got one email too many...but I like many of the points he made. And Alex Hamilton did indeed set his NY Artillery on the west bank of the Raritan and slowed down Cornwallis.

Gotta disagree. The terms might be irrefutable to anyone with an iota of intellectual honesty, but libscum lack that, so they can and will refute the opinion. Just look at the dissents for some examples...

That's all well and good, but I'm from New Jersey and but for the other Jersey Freepers I usually feel like I'm all alone out here.

The guys at my gun club (In Jackson) are all solidly pro second amendment, but when ti comes to other topics you wouldn't believe some of the stuff that comes out of their mouths.

I'm not saying it's a lost cause, but conservatives are few and far between.

Here is where we come to a crucial difference between liberals and conservatives. Implicit in the liberal view is the idea that rights must be trimmed to fit the behavior of the citizenry. The conservative, meanwhile, argues that rights are eternal while social conditions are temporary.

BINGO! Great post, Pharmboy.

No, man, it is a lost cause. Lived there all my life, up until about two years ago then my wife and I finally concluded that enough is enough (taxes) and moved to NH. Still haven’t sold my NJ house, maybe next year, if the market improves.

I count Paul as a friend, through a mutual friend in New Jersey. Sometimes we disagree. But in this article on this subject, I think he's spot on.

I hear you, man...I'm in the largely Republican county of Morris, so it's not that bad here. I lived in Manhattan for 25 years...this is paradise compared to that.

I have a good buddy from upstae NY and he is a strong Second Amendment guy but just like your shooting friends on the other issues. Can't reason with him...

Y'know, during the Founding, there were disagreements between the folks from the North and the folks from the South. But they (and WE current Patriots) always agreed on a few things: FREEDOM FROM TYRANNY was and is the key.

And the fact that we are ONE VOTE AWAY from tyranny scares the bejeezus outta me...

I'm with you. We're one vote away from judicial tyranny. And it's a shaky vote — Kennedy the Magnificent.

You're not alone. However, we are few in number.

We're like those people with the overturned buses in the first Mad Max movie (not the original road warrior... the next one). Huddled together while flaming liberal crossbow bolts go zinging overhead.... That's the way I saw it when I wrote this anyway: "New Jersey's Image Problem"

Well, here in Warren & Sussex counties conservatism is alive and well...for now at least. As for the rest of this liberal cesspool, also known as New Jersey, all is lost.

Four years and counting, before we can make the "Great Escape"!

> Jersey-born judges get it right on guns

And now the headline we'd really like to see:

Jersey-sitting judges get it right on guns

But I suspect it'll be a cold day in Trenton before we see that.

Jackson seems to attract alot of Staten Island types who are usually pro-statist as long as it benefits “the right people” (ie THEM). I still find it incredible how you (and two of my uncles) live in a township where it seems to take an entire day just to drive from one end to the other, and where the roads seem more like indian trails than thoroughfares.
