I don't know where the he** you live

New Mexico. I already knew this but you could have checked Slim's profile page.

Note, unlike Cali. they hunt them in NM. Maybe that is the difference.

It think it’s because we’re easier to peel than, say, a feral hog or deer.

It's all part of nature. And what could be more natural than a bullet between the eyes?

A lot of otherwise intelligent people seem to assume that humans are uncontestably and permanently at the top of the food chain, generally from the fact that their usual encounter with the other contenders is wrapped in plastic in the supermarket. Nothing so disabuses the innocent of that notion as getting stalked. A whole lot of atavistic memory comes flooding back when you're walking in the nice friendly woods and you hear the brush rustling nearby...and whatever it is, is keeping up with you.

Yep, I will give you that. When we could hunt them here(CA) it was extrememly rare for one to kill a human. It is common now but the MSM doesn’t report attacks now because they are afraid we will open hunting again. You have to read local papers to find out about attacks of cougars on humans.

I think it is because we don't need to be peeled at all! My brother had to kill two of them (I will not tell you his name or when but it was at least 15 years ago) when they attacked him, luckily he was carrying a Browning 30-06 auto and was able to take them both down but not without a few marks of his own. Before they stopped hunting in CA we had no fear of them, now we watch like a hawk when we are in the woods. We meaning anyone with a drop of sense that goes out in the woods.

I live in Tijeras, just a little former pueblo off RT. 66 in NM east of Albuquerque.

Of course I’m aware of the problems with cougars and coyotes in CA. (Hey, I wish they’d eat some CA transplants that moved here!) Where they’re “protected” they lose all fear of man. Here, even the coyotes move quick when they see somebody.

Californians getting eaten doesn’t count.

Now Texicans.... there’s somethings even a hungry cat won’t do. He might cover ya up, but eat ya?

My brother had to kill two of them...

I've heard from some friends that feral dogs are something to
be on the look-out for in Southeastern Oklahoma.

One friend told me that he had to drop two "leaders" of a pack...
otherwise he doesn't know what would have happened to him and
his fellow hiker.

I used to seldom see a cougar in CA while I was in the woods, now I see them all the time but enviros insist that they are dying out. BS, I would like to stake some greenies out in the woods and smear them with steak fat and see what happens to them!

If you see them, they’re way too bold. You be careful, OK?

Feral dogs are such a problem in some eastern states they have passed laws the allow killing of any dog not on a leash in the woods in some states. Not enough of them to my way of thinking. Feral dogs will attack with no fear what so ever.

Don’t worry Mr. Slim. I have put my share down when I had to, but will not speak of dates or times or places. If they look at me like I am a meal that’s it brother!

Ok, I forgot I can talk about one of them. One night, many years ago, at least 18, I came home from my job on swing shift and saw a lion crossing across the space between my house and the neighbors(a rural area, lots of space between houses). I went inside and told my wife to stay inside no matter what. I grabbed my rifle and went outside again and he was trying to kill my neighbors dog, I shot it, and it carried on something awful, they simply go crazy when hit. It died, but the dog died also. The local authorities said it was a case of defense and I was not charged.

This was in an area of about 300 people living in a housing area, this lion had no fear what so ever and thought the dogs, and maybe humans when the dogs ran out, were a great food source.

At last report, there were no cougar reported prowling the halls of Northern Arizona U.

I found the news media reaction to this cougar killing of a human to be very curious. The Santa Fe New Mexican said their story was from an AP feed. The other story seems to be from a writer on a site which is part of something associated with the New York Times, called Common Cause.

One question is whether the man was attacked, mauled and dragged to where his body was found or whether he had died and the cat than fed on his body.

The autopsy will determine that.
