This article goes over sleep physiology, stages of sleep and napping. I was unable to copy and paste a section of the article but the link above should help.

The article is an excellent, short summary of the issues.

I nap every day at 2 PM. (I now know instinctively when it is 2 PM). Sometimes it's only a half an hour. Then I'm good till midnight and awaken refreshed at 6 AM in the summertime, 7 in the winter.

Ya see...I had one of those Big Ben's when I was a kid....The horror of hearing that clanging taught me to get up on my own.

I have not used an alarm clock in 20 years, I have dogs and a cat.

Seriously, 20 minutes in the snooze mode makes the rest of the day just fine, tough to do it at work, though!

In NYC, they have places to take naps for 20min - 1hour. They provide a bed, ambient music, etc. More of a recliner than a bed. I used to skip out for thiry minutes at about 2pm.

Of course, I was a Managing Director, so no one knew or asked where I was.

Years ago, while serving on ships, I - and others - would take what we called a nooner. At lunchtime, if you didn’t have the duty, you go down to your rack, pull the curtains and take a short nap. Usually about 30-60 minutes. It always made the rest of the day managable.

I am a superb nappist. Proud of my napping skills but work constantly to improve my napping abilities. One may be born with a particular talent, but that doesn’t mean one shouldn’t strive to get better.

And then once one has those abilities, it behooves one to pass them on to others. This is what I’m trying to do. I want to reach out to millions of potentially good nappists, pull them off their treadmills and bikes, and show them how great it can be to sit down and lose consciousness for an hour or three in the middle of the day.

Right now I’m working to get napping admitted to the 2012 Olympics as an exhibition sport. When people see what a great activity this is and how fabulous it is to watch napping, I’m sure there will be an outcry, and the IOC will agree to let napping as a regular sport for 2016. With luck, dedication, and God’s blessing, I expect to stand on that platform and accept the gold. We Americans can blow China, Russia, Germany, and the other big guns right out of the water in this sport! USA! USA! USA!

I can't believe the folks at The Boston Globe actually came up with something good for once.

I don’t have much going on today (dentist app’t), so I’m going to hop into a hot bath and read about the Mycenaeans. :’)

Where I come from, that’s not what a nooner is. ;-0

Yes, and since I come from the same place, I can relate.

Funny story, though...the Navy guy on my team at work made a comment about taking the occasional "nooner" at lunchtime. The first time he said it, the conversation went sort of like this:

Him: I had a nooner today. I feel so much better.

Me: (Looking somewhat bemused) A nooner? Uh...with who?

Him: Huh?

I bet the conversation got REALLY careful immediately after that excerpt. :)
