A city Health Department study finds that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes.
The study, released Monday, says about 26 percent of New York City adults have genital herpes, compared to about 19 percent nationwide.

Remember the recent report on the 25% of Teenage Girls that had an STD? Turned out that number was based on a sample of 600 women as old as 19.

These are serious questions for a medical professional.
1. Is the herpes virus people get in their mouths a different kind than the type they get on their genitals? Or, is it the same virus and the only difference is the location on the body?
2. Is the reported increase in genital herpes a real increase or merely due to increased awareness and reporting?
Thanks.

Wonder what the rate of stds is among polygamist groups. Bet readers know the answer to that one.

To paraphrase Doug Stanhope, “I am a player in life, not an observer. I look at herpes the way a skateboarder looks at a skinned knee”.

Yes, there is a big difference between testing positive for the HSV virus and having an active case. I’m actually surprised the percentage that tests positive isn’t larger.
Same thing with HPV. About 75% of the adult female population will test positive, but very, very few will develop cervical cancer.

The article talks about genital herpes.

Herpes has been discussed nationally for about three decades. I find it very difficult to believe that suddenly people just recently became aware of it and now are reporting it.

Very true. But they also didn’t include thirteen-year-olds, which would have brought down the average.

So what's the correct number then? ONLY 20%?

I would tend to agree with you. That does sound rather inflated.

In 1955 oral sex was viewed as a perversion and there was no such thing as genital herpes. Pretty simple really.
I know. Now that people have decided to act like a bunch of baboons, they're stunned when they find that they have to pay the consequences of baboons.

Not when you consider all the ways to pick up the herpes virus. You can get it in hot tubs, and also at gyms. Anywhere that it’s warm and wet enough for the virus to survive outside the body.

Still not great news, no question—but the report did seem a bit misleading on that count.

At Burroughs Wellcome Company, after discovering the only treatment for herpes (acyclovir), the following joke was making the rounds:
Q: What's the difference between true love and herpes?
A: Herpes really is forever.

Just as soon as the world was rid of the AIDS pandemic among heterosexuals (see Drudge bottom left today), the health department expects American citizens who DON'T engage in promicuous, unprotected sex to cough it up once agein for these obvious losers.
Soon we'll be treated to images of healthy young women whose mothers are worried about whether or not they'll get herpes ... with the caption --> Donate to the Herpes ZIP FUND or some such BS...
Really don't care what happens to promiscous people... and don't apologize for that either.
