Red wine may be much more potent than was thought in extending human lifespan, researchers say in a new report that is likely to give impetus to the rapidly growing search for longevity drugs.
The study is based on dosing mice with resveratrol, an ingredient of some red wines. Some scientists are already taking resveratrol in capsule form, but others believe it is far too early to take the drug, especially using wine as its source, until there is better data on its safety and effectiveness.
The report is part of a new wave of interest in drugs that may enhance longevity. On Monday, Sirtris, a startup founded in 2004 to develop drugs with the same effects as resveratrol, completed its sale to GlaxoSmithKline for $720 million.
Sirtris is seeking to develop drugs that activate protein agents known in people as sirtuins.
The upside is so huge that if we are right, the company that dominates the sirtuin space could dominate the pharmaceutical industry and change medicine, Dr. David Sinclair of the Harvard Medical School, a co-founder of the company, said Tuesday.
Serious scientists have long derided the idea of life-extending elixirs, but the door has now been opened to drugs that exploit an ancient biological survival mechanism, that of switching the bodys resources from fertility to tissue maintenance. The improved tissue maintenance seems to extend life by cutting down on the degenerative diseases of aging.
The reflex can be prompted by a faminelike diet, known as caloric restriction, which extends the...

The company Sirtris, meanwhile, has been testing resveratrol and other drugs that activate sirtuin. These drugs are small molecules, more stable than resveratrol, and can be given in smaller doses. In April, Sirtris reported that its formulation of resveratrol, called SRT501, reduced glucose levels in diabetic patients...

Grape juice works just as well without the negative side effects. Even a glass of wine per day significantly increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer.
I know a lot of people hate the taste of beer, and I agree it’s an aquired taste. Red wine is like that for me. I would rather drink beer than red wine. I have had some good red wine, so it’s not like I don’t like any of it. It’s just that most of it tastes terrible to me.
beer supposedly has its own anti-aging properties. And as for grape juice working just as well, that’s debatable. The alcohol itself seems to have some beneficial effect as well.
I’m not what you would call an oenophile...cheap whine out of a box often tastes better to me than the high dollar stuff.
Who’de thought? Medicine in a gallon jug? Why yes Dr., I will take another dose of Ripple.
Who cares about red wine? Now, if you can find a science article that proves CHOCOLATE makes you live longer, that would be interesting! :)

Well, which wines? Or do I have to have some of all of them to be sure?
Lots of stuff out there. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Effects of Low Habitual Cocoa Intake on Blood Pressure and Bioactive Nitric Oxide
Data in this relatively small sample of otherwise healthy individuals with above-optimal BP indicate that inclusion of small amounts of polyphenol-rich dark chocolate as part of a usual diet efficiently reduced BP and improved formation of vasodilative nitric oxide.
Cocoa Intake, Blood Pressure, and Cardiovascular Mortality
In the present study, usual daily cocoa intake was inversely related to blood pressure in cross-sectional analysis. In prospective analysis, usual cocoa intake was associated with a 45% to 50% lower risk of cardiovascular and all-cause death.
God is good.
He also said that he watched an interview with a guy who lived to 110, and he was asked what his secret was. He answered, "I drink a glass of red wine every day." My grandfather figures he'll live to 220 if he drinks two every day. :-D
I had to start with white wine and work my way up. Now I can’t stand white and red wine is my favorite form of alcohol. Although in my experience it does teach moderation. Wine gives me the worst hangover headaches of anything. Luckily I can get about two bottles down without that happening. And two bottles is more than enough to put me in a great mood.
It gives new meaning to the words “WELL PERSERVED”
Woo Hoo!
